Ben's 95 90 Quattro - Project FunkTaxi

Postby Grillage » Sat Sep 24, 2016 8:52 pm

After running across my first audi (a 93 90Q) in the junkyard a few weeks ago and missing it, I found a 95 90 - also pearl white - in unbelievable shape in Louisville CO.

The old car in its final resting place : Image

My new car as it arrived:
Image

Came with a vinyl bra and a broken headlight and fog light:

But the car is in really amazing shape overall. a couple dings but the Pearl paint is stunning. It's been garage kept by the same owner since 97. She had it repainted by Audi under warranty after the clearcoat failed.
The interior is what really blew my mind though. SOFT leather. Like REALLY soft.
No peeling leather on the door cards, still very firm. Headliner is totally good. Ashtray has never seen cigarettes etc.
Only a couple things I need to fix. The rear center console has a burn or something in it. The head unit is silver and needs to go.

I got the bra off and there was a lot of funk underneath it. A bunch of black spots that looked and acted like tar or something when I cleaned them. I got all that off but there was a slight discoloration where one band of the bra sat. I used a little polishing compound and it seems better.

Also put the extra set of wheels/tires on it.

After (still a little to do)

Anyway, the plan is to get this thing running well for now (which I think it does already) and then do a 20 valve swap. Working on whether that's a 5 cylinder or 4 cylinder 20v swap. I would LOVE to do an AAN or 3B but that's a bit more involved than a 1.8T.

I replaced the Headlights with a set of Depos I had in the basement and pulled the fogs from my old car.

Other immediate needs are clear corners, a 3 spoke wheel (I have a new OEM one coming!) and I'd love to find some treser black tails for it.

Anyway, I'm super excited to monkey with this car. I forgot how much I loved the B4!

So you sold your CQ's, and bought a B4? Expecting kids in the near future? :P

Really though, it looks like a really clean example of what a B4 should be. Contact audibits on ebay for a set of B4 80 inner tails. They look much better than the 90 ones do. You may have seen them on George's black one at Carlisle.

I have two kids already!

I'm on the lookout for tinted tails, I think they'll look great against the pearl.

What a great find. So it had the same owner since 97? Wonder if it was a lease car originally (not that it matters)?

Cant wait to see this one.

She bought it from the original owner I don't think off a lease.

I ran a scan through everything today with vcds and saw a few error codes. I had a CEL today too.

Lean condition reported
Hvac had a main flap not operating

I found 2 broken vac hoses - one at the fuel rail (lean condition) and one at the cruise control.

Also a broken check valve at the firewall that goes to the HVAC.

Started the car up and heard the hvac flap close itself. Easy fixes are the best!

Mike, you'll see this at Carlisle next year hopefully. I doubt the engine swap will be started before then. I have parts to horde first!

Re: Ben's 95 90 - 5 cylinder swap questions

Postby Grillage » Fri Sep 30, 2016 6:26 pm

I made some more progress the last couple days.
Got the new three spoke wheel installed and the radio too.

The radio is pretty sweet for $40! matches well, has a red readout and bluetooth/usb too
Image

A couple more pics now that the clear corners are on:
Image
Image

Also replaced the batteries and reprogrammed the two IR keys that came with the car
Image

So now, Let's talk about a 5 cylinder swap.

For a B4 what's the best option, 3B or AAN?
What are the complications?
I'll need to weld in the B3 engine mount brackets right?
Do I run a front Radiator or use the S2 type?

I'd love some input!

AAN intake manifold will have the issue with the PS pump / TB interference issue. Hank's not making his small chassis AAN manifolds any more, so either you'd have to DIY, source one secondhand or go 3B.

3B downpipe is a drop in and doesn't have the silly double cat like the AAN/ABY downpipes did.

You will need to weld in the engine mounts, correct.

Front rad vs. side rad is up to you, you'll have to decide which route you ultimately prefer as they will both involve fabrication and parts sourcing. If you're not familiar with scubadave's build thread, he developed a very nice solution for a front rad in a 5 cylinder. Believe it was with a mk4 VW radiator.

Once you weld in the engine mounts (or make custom mounts for I5 to B4) you have all the same restrictions as a B3 since the engine bay is basically the same. Only reason B4 had front mount rads were because they came with I4 or V6, all I5 B4's had the side mount like a B2/3.
Wiring would be pretty much the same as a B3 also, they use the same fusebox.

I'm really surprised nobody has made engine mounts for an I5 into a B4...I bet it's not hard, they aren't that far off from each other.

Actually...looking at it now are they even in a different location? Has anyone tried to bolt an I5 into a B4 and seen how far off the mounts are? Doesn't look like much. I should've checked when I had the engine out.

I may have heard speculation that 1 works but not the other. I have both but measuring x/y/z with the engines in the way is difficult.

If you're not familiar with scubadave's build thread, he developed a very nice solution for a front rad in a 5 cylinder. Believe it was with a mk4 VW radiator.

Actually the rad is a URS6 and involved heavy modification, and if you are thinking on doing this yourself, think really hard. The skill involved to do this is pretty much on the expert side of things, and you would do well to just go the easy route (side mount) if you don't have the skill and tools to pull it off. Even some of the welding was beyond my skill. If I was to find the right stock style rad setup that would work in the VERY tight area in front of the motor, I would tell everyone what that was, but since I have yet to come across that unicorn....

If you are building this car to be a fun DD, I would go with the 1.8t because you can source all the parts to be bolt on and is the least amount of headache possible. Dave/ hybrid hatch has done this swap many times and is THE expert on this swap. my 2c

No question the 1.8T would be easier and way cheaper.

I still think I want to do a 5 cylinder swap. Once I get past the mounts I'm basically doing the same swap I'd be doing in a coupe. just need to source a few things.

looking at those pics, the passenger's side looks like it's in the same place exactly. anybody have a B3 or B4 sitting empty to measure?
I made the ABH B3 mounts, no reason I couldn't make the B4 to I5 I'd think...
