Re: Ben's 95 90 - 5 Cylinder Swap Questions!

Postby Grillage » Sat Oct 08, 2016 6:47 pm

Seems from what I've read the last few days that an AAN with a 3b intake is the way to go - or a 3b with standalone to go coils

What's the hot turbo setup these days? I had a Billet K26 on my URS6 when I had it a few years ago but those aren't made anymore. I'm not looking for 600HP - more like a fun daily with minimal lag and 300- 350 HP. I doubt I'd do rods and such for the build.

Also, exciting news - I FINALLY got financed to do the garage project I've been working on for a couple years. I have a great piece of property here in Cincinnati. 2 acres, in the city still though at the end of a dead end quiet street. I have a long driveway and a HUGE parking area (5 cars side by side) but have done all my projects in the fresh air. Transmission swaps in the snow (Cabriolet) engine swaps in the ass freezing cold (V8 CQ).

I can't wait to get this 3 car garage built though it may be delayed until spring given my GC's schedule. He's booked through December and pouring concrete in the cold is iffy.

Also, I got all the remaining small issues worked out with the new 90. replaced the mast on the power antenna, replaced the oil pressure sender to fix the pressure gauge being pegged on 5 bar, and drilled out the rivets holding the front plate holder on the front bumper. Also replaced the rear center console. Looked like the previous owner spilled nail polish remover or something under the parking brake handle. I also installed a dual USB instead of the cig lighter.

I've got an order on the way from Audi Tradition with new carpet inserts for the center console and some other fun stuff.

I will keep this car as is until the garage is built and it can go into surgery for the 5 cylinder swap. I'll horde parts until then

A small EFR is what you'd be looking for... a 6258 or 6758 for sure. You can get an adapter to run a v-band on a stock exhaust manifold as well, which helps make the purchase more future proof. Play around with the BorgWarner MatchBot website!

I'm really a fan of the EFR and V-band. The V-Band will give you alot of flexibility.
I do have quite a few of the parts you will need. I have anything from just a 7A oil pan, to a 10vt engine, to a complete AAN that could be for sale for the right price depending on what your needs are. I also have a parts car 4000 if you need the mounts

Thanks for the input! The EFRs look like a pretty good option. I'll need to see if Marc has a tune for them too.

People seem to be moving away from RS2 turbos - how would they compare to an EFR?
and Afterthought, I'll be definitely contacting you once I start the process!

Ben, EFR is like 4 generation newer then a RS2 turbo. with supporting mods, there is no question which is better.

I also like the garret GT and especially the GTX turbos. You may be able to get one a little cheaper than EFR. The total cost will depend on your setup though and how far from stock you want to take it (manifold, etc.)

Don't forget the EFR has an integrated BOV and can be optioned with an integrated WG as well, so can offer some savings depending on the chosen turbo and manifolds, etc.

Marc has Motronic tunes already, and I believe he offers full p'n'p EFR kits.

I see them on Hanks site now. Thanks!

certainly more expensive than just throwing an RS2 and software on but I see how its a better option.

Started some things to get the V6 in good shape for the short term this weekend.

Got the Timing Belt changed yesterday and I think it was a really good thing I did it too. Found a few things in bad shape. The TB roller and tensioner were both really in poor shape.

the bearing on the serpentine belt tensioner was shot too. Found a replacement for that at Autozone since I didn't plan to replace it already.

The other issues are that the coolant was yellow (prestone?) and the engine bay is super dirty.
Image

the new TB is in and working well. the engine is SUPER quiet now with all the bearings on the rollers in good shape.

I was looking at the engine and the only possible explanation I can find for such a broad swath of dirty oily mess is that the PS pump is spraying a little bit. It does have a wet spot around the seam on the pump so I ordered a rebuild kit (https://www.amazon.com/Edelmann-8842-Po ... 90+quattro)

Got it all taken apart and it seems like I'm right about the PS pump being the issue:
Image

Also, I had no heat before the TB job and still don't. when the car is running there is no flow at the bleed point to the heater core. I'm hoping it just needs a better bleed but I'm going to flush the old coolant out of it tomorrow too.

That gunk in the valley could also be engine oil squeezing out of the gasket between the block and the valley pan. A common oil leak spot in the V6. When I had my AAH, that is where the biggest leak came from if I revved it over 4000.

More progress...

The heads have now been gasket matched:
Image

The Power steering pump has been taken out and a new seal kit installed. I bought the Edelmann 8842 per everything I could find but the main shaft seal was too small. I found that the 8841 had the correct seal. I did the disassembly and in wasn't that tough. I believed the leak was from the main big o-ring but the metal seal helper inside was broken.

In much less fun news, I found out what happens when one of the restaurants hoods catches on fire:

Fire dept was remarkably restrained. They only used water from the roof into the duct so none got into the restaurant.

The fire was in the hood from the wood fired grill in the basement which is in "Sotto" restaurant. The hood duct goes up through two stories of "Boca" restaurant which is where the walls got ripped apart a bit and all the smoke damage was. Lots of holes in walls to get to the duct but not much else. We got really lucky.

No sprinklers or kitchen ansuls.

You get creosote and grease in the hoods in a restaurant, just like build up of creosote in the chimneys in a house. If you don't have them cleaned out now and then, they will catch fire.

A fire waiting to happen.

The hoods are cleaned once a month. I can only speculate that they've been doing a poor job.

That's had to be the source of the fire.

Everything's been running great since the timing belt job and mass clean up.

I spent some time getting all the bulbs swapped out to 2w bulbs and installed the extra trip computer/autocheck I had in storage

Also, I finally got around to tackling the suspension.

Image

Bought an unused set of Mance Pro-Mounts along with the BBSE (Big Bore Strut Extenders) so I could use URS struts in the front. I upgraded to B5 S4 struts in the rear which are supposed to feel like the URS fronts.

Part numbers are:
FRONT:
34-003695
Old part numbers:
P36-0369
F4-P36-0369-H0
F4-P36-0369-H1

REAR:
24-062145
Old part numbers:
BE3-6214
F4-BE3-6214-H1
F4-BE3-6214-H2

I grabbed the front strut uprights off my old car at the junkyard (which is now gone and crushed) and did them up.

Cut off 2" of old narrow strut tube:
Image
Put in the BBSE's and made sure they were the same 14" depth as the old setup:
Image
Image

I sent them off to be welded by a guy here locally who also sandblasted them so I could get them powdercoated:
Image

I ordered new spring hats (part # 893412113 - http://www.midatlanticaudiparts.com/p/C ... 12113.html) because I forgot to take those to get blasted and I'd rather start with good ones for the powder coater.

I am hoping to get this all installed in the next couple weeks. I'm out in England/Ireland for the next week or so but after that it's my first priority. I'm also still working on 5 cylinder swap parts and some other fun stuff.
I have a set of euro tails on the way and while I really want Treser tails I may install these as is. I could also try tinting them myself.

I bought both of the brackets new. They were ordered from a dealership in Germany and from what I was told, they were among the last few sets still available. Not sure of the current status of the stock. There are as few Audi dismantlers overseas who I am sure would be able to cut them out of a parts car.

The part numbers are accurate that you have below.

If you end up going the 5cyl route and have any questions, please feel free to ask. My 90 is still running and it's a blast.

Where did you find the brackets?
I had considered going the Audi tradition route but my local dealer couldn't figure it out.

Audi tradition didn't have them when I looked. For them you can always find some nice Canadian member here to ship through.

I bought a set from the "small chassis Audi" Facebook page. There is supposed to be another set left
