I didn't realize the B6 a4 had an 01E, is it a 4:11 final or did you swap rear ends as well?

I had a back seat ride in the vomit commit at BBQ last year. With 3 of us in the car, it pulled harder in 4th gear at THAT time than any of my cars in 2nd.

That and I haven't seen a fuel gauge go down this quickly since driving some big block V8s

Yep, early 3.0 cars, very close to RS2 ratios and flexible shafts like the TDI. Not to mention they're stupid cheap.

I need to get a ride this year! Come to think of it, I haven't ridden in any of the 07k cars, they all keep breaking before I get a chance :D

Roll bar is in!

Took it to the track and trashed the tires. This piece delaminated and ended my day Saturday

Then finished off the weekend on the skid pad.

Yeah, spent a little too much time on the rev limiter. I️ was having too much fun to care.

Nice work! Were you able to make the rear bar one-piece and removable?

Yes, but I have not unbolted it since welding it up. I need to pull it out and probably re-do one of the strut mount points since there was some shrinkage after welding. Once I pull it out, the links are not going to quite line up perfectly.

Roll bar looks proper. Glad you were able to get it done in time for track time.

Tire casualty like that means they are perfect for skidpad shenanigans.

BTW, I'm on the hunt for an FYF.

It's rare to have a set of tires ready to trash, a camera, and a legal place to shred them:)

The transmission is great, no more 2nd gear on the track. 3rd, 4th and 5th at buttonwillow now, the way it should be

Check car-part.com, not sure what the options around you are like but there's a bunch in the $3-500 range around here. If you're not in a rush I'd be happy to grab one and ship it down/over.

The trans for my next project is going to be a wide 1st 5spd box w/wide 1st, FYF main shaft, Allroad 2nd and FYF 3/4/5/6. Should shorten up 2nd for hillclimbs and auto-x and create a nice even spread throughout the gears.

Thanks for the offer, not much here in New Mexico. I'll keep my eyes peeled here and the probably hit you up. I've noticed they are much cheaper in the northeast.

Perfect storm

The FYF sounds perfect except I do like my taller 6th gear that I could swap in.

Jim Green's 90q 20vt - 636whp 07k

Postby audifreakjim » Fri Dec 01, 2017 12:38 pm

Small update, I didn't unbolt the roll bar before the track event because I knew it would not line up right again at the towers after welding. The joints require a perfect alignment and sure enough, everything had shrunk about 2mm after welding.

I had been wanting to add a strut bar to the rear, so I did this before hacking apart the roll bar mounts and re-welding them. I was kind of hoping it would be able to adjust the strut mounts enough to get the roll bar back into place without stressing anything too much. It turns out, it worked perfect, it pulls the mounts together 2mm just by lightly turning the bar in by hand. It's almost scary how easy they are to move..

The nice thing is that I made the strut bar from spare parts I had accumulated over the years from messing with steering control rods.

That worked out nicely. Are you going to pull the roll bar our and get it powdercoated?

From what I've seen these chassis are surprisingly floppy, especially so in the coupes. I wonder if anyone has set one up on a test rig and measured torsional rigidity. The roll bar should help a bit in that regard.

Looks great, Jim.

I'll put $1 on the fact that you'll rarely, if ever actually take that roll hoop out of the car :)

BTW, why harness bar at the back vs. in the main hoop right behind seats? Just curious.
