I'll test fire it earlier but the intake and exhaust have to come apart for gaskets. I hope to drive it Monday (open DP lol).

I'll post a picture tomorrow
When time is scarce I'd rather not be forced to redo something.

You'll test fire it without gaskets? Why?

I'm not assembling it to test fire I'm assembling it to make sure everything fits together and to finish the intercooler plumbing. Once I finish assembly it will be difficult to not test fire ita_CQ wrote:You'll test fire it without gaskets? Why?
Re: Ed's 1991 CQ. Nitty Gritty
lol I'd do the same thing I think. I keep firing my car up even though the plumbing isn't done. I just like to let 'er run!

Install gaskets and make misc stuff fit. I don't think you'd waste gaskets...they won't be destroyed if you have to take something off right away and then put it back on. You can keep starting it to just hear it run but you're just eating your bearings away with all the cold starts. If stuff fits, toss the gaskets on and drive it.
Re: Ed's 1991 CQ. Nitty Gritty
Its definitely true that your gaskets will be fine. I do it all the time.

I'm sure it would be fine, at this point the time to take it apart for gaskets will be the same as waiting. Still hoping to drive it Monday.

I think I'm taking the afternoon/evening off. I was all gung ho this morning but had an appointment, 3 stops on my way home, and now I need to extract this sob. No sense getting pissed and breaking it worse.

How do you snap off a stud mounting EM?? Overtorqued it?

I was putting on the gasket and it looked tweaked so I decided to pull it out; not thinking that it was tweaked from being nearly broken. Who knows when it happened.a_CQ wrote:How do you snap off a stud mounting EM?? Overtorqued it?

Parts delays account for a large amount of time as well as never having more than a ~4hr period to work. Oh well, I was hoping this was final assembly.

I'm really debating what to do. Extracting the stud with the head in place seems risky. I have a complete 7a available but the whole attraction of the 7at, for me, is not having to pull the engine/head.
Seriously considering taking the rods off the shelf, running the AAN and being done with it.

Re: Ed's 1991 CQ. Nitty Gritty
Maybe I'm missing something, but when you're so close to firing up how is that a logical possibility?
Ed's 1991 CQ. Nitty Gritty
Well, ripping the car apart in the first place was not very logical :dur:
I guess i'm hung up on having to pull the head (TB, WP, HG, bolts/studs, other gaskets, etc) and just ending up with a 7a again.
So the one that broke is at ~10 o'clock (cyl 1), if I run the other 3 will it seal?

Re: Ed's 1991 CQ. Nitty Gritty
fresh gasket and perhaps some gasket sealant junk it should especially if u can get to all of them and crank them well. I can usually crank down hard on half the bolts on most things and it seems to do the job...
Ed's 1991 CQ. Nitty Gritty
The way I see I is that the 7a only used two studs and sealed fine in my last 7at. I don't think rotating the two studs 180° will have a huge impact.

Re: Ed's 1991 CQ. Nitty Gritty
Just go for it. You'll have a hard time hearing it over the open dp I suspect...plus if it seals, you're ok. And if it leaks by just a smidge, at least you'll have started/driven the car.
Ed's 1991 CQ. Nitty Gritty
Lol, I'll have to hook up the DP for emissions
Re: Ed's 1991 CQ. Nitty Gritty
Well, a buddy of mine thinks he can extract it in situ! Won't be until Sun/Monday so I'll keep wrapping up what I can in the meantime.
