Just bring a USB memory stick. I have been taking pictures as it progresses. Hank did some welding on it today for me, so it's coming along. I hope it fits under that sport hood. Do you think we ought to check it before the top goes on? At this point, it could still be lowered if needs be. Just a thought.

Im thinking I need to bring it over and set it in place... I have to look at a couple other dimensions besides the height, plus I want to figure out the routing of the fuel and other lines. I need to start eyeballin' my options for hanging the intercooler once i get the end tank layed out.

That IM should give that ol 20v the best shot at breathing. It is very nice. It makes me want to do a 20v again.... kindof. I bet with that 2871r the car is going to be a hoot and a half. I already welded the top on the IM, so I hope it clears the hood!! LOL, otherwise we are SOL.

Yeah, come over.. When you ordered the downpipe material, you didnt by chance order a 2.5 to 3 inch transition from that place did you? I dont remember if they have it on the website, but if you call and talk to him, you can get it. They may even have a 2 to three transition.. it is cheap, like 8 dollars in 304SS..
Isaw a post of yours about welding to the stock audi exhaust... Any stainless can be welded with the right rod.. dont worry about that. Did you get V-bands ordered from somewhere?

Yeah, and as soon as you get back, mock up the IC so we can get that rolling. Then you will just have to start to mock up the intake, and you will be close.

My Dad and I are excited about this setup!!!

Well, not too much new to report except the upgrade to a IIc from my IIb that has been sitting on the shelf for a couple years!

With the exception of some intercooler piping I have all the parts (either on hand or on order) to complete the conversion now. Im sure there will be some miscellaneous parts that I fall short of but thats expected, right?

Oh, and the intake manifold? It promises to be the sweetest 20v intake ever. We are doing a bit of tweaking for clearance reasons, but it is gonna flow... Thanks to Hank and his dad on this one! The idea was born in a deep engineering session a few weeks ago. Hank left for class and when he got back a couple hours later we were still talking 10 intakes...

It's rather anticlimatic now that we have had to rework it. I just got done cutting it up after having it all welded up. I wasn't impressed and we all know that remodels are never as nice as new construction, but functionality counts for something I suppose. :frustrated:

Anticlimatic my butt - I kept the faith and Im very happy with the result of countless hours of work on this intake. Things are getting tight now that this stuff is falling into place. Im pretty happy with the orientation of the components.

Image

Here is another view from the top over the rail and injectors

Image

Cutting things a little close? Well this is after the re-work and we got the room we were looking for. I will still end up wrapping or shielding the turbine-to-intake proximity. Im holding back pics of the good stuff - I'll be showing off the velocity stacks tomorrow when I pull the pieces back off.

Image

We just have to mount the plate to adapt the throttle body and then its just a matter of plumbing it - yea, Im trying to keep myself motivated by making THAT sound easy.

Oh yea, how could I forget building the downpipe... I can see now that it will not be for the faint of heart. There is a chance I may have to scale back to 2 1/2 instead of 3" like planned - we'll see once I start cutting and wedging.

Since this wont get bumped if I only edit the post above...

I just noticed while looking at the pics - I guess I could pull that old fashioned distributor out now that i got the IIc huh? 8)

So...I decided that I would post a few of the as build pictures of the intake manifold. It all started as a discussion of who of the 5 Urq's in Las Vegas was going to make it up to Colorado in August for the URQ25 event. I'm not sure about the other 2 in town, but between Sean's, Hank's, or mine Sean's in the best example and one that really should be there. It really is a well put together car, so the Las Vegas Urq geeks decided to pull resources and do a one off mani. Sean did the wrenching, Hank the welding, and with the input of all three I designed, cut, machined and in general tediously hand massaged this one off.
We talked about a straight up MC mani, but didn't want to fight the injectors and wanted as much I/C room as possible up front. We had a 4kq mani that feeds from the rear, but really wanted something different so we began with an MC manifold figuring we would feed it from the rear the way the runners are angled.
Image

I cut the top above and then below the idle valve passage.
Image
Image

milled the top for flatness and square.Image
Image

Cut a 1/4" plate to extend surface area and make sure the runners underneath were sealed.
Image
Image

After welding the welds were milled flat again.
Image

11/4" holes were drilled into 1/4" plate and 11/2" holes into the bottom of the D shaped extruded channel we used for the top. The bottom of the channel had been cut off to take a wedge out and make the channel taper.
Image
Image

They were then stacked on the runners, welded and hand ported.
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

A 3" aluminum 1/2 sphere was cut to fit the end and the top was fit and welded.
Image

Once the top was welded we test fit it only to find out the tube header hit. :frustrated: After looking at it for a few days we cut the top off again, made the correction and rewelded. It should flow better than stock and looks hot!

No problem.....it's been fun, but hectic. I would have posted up a finished (for the 2nd time) picture, but you came and snagged it to test fit it before I could get the pic. I at least need your T/B so that I can make up the flange. When do you get back?

Nice fab work but I am sure your life would have been made simpler if you had started with a Volvo 850TD intake manifold :-)

What do they look like. It's not like the Wiz to comment without a pic

Been quiet lately, as any slave in a 110 degree garage would be.

I have been fighting and hopefully winning some of the smaller battles.

Image
The 8AN fitting on the bottom of the water outlet is to support my 20v aux cooling mod. Rather than drilling into the head 3 times and running 3 small lines I am tapping in to the water jacket between the 4 / 5 cylinders and running 8AN over to the water outlet. This is different from what most have done but I feel it will be every bit as efficient - Plus I reduce the chances of screwing up and having to pull the head by 66%

Image
Here is the VR Sensor Bracket, its pretty sturdy. I may fine tune it a bit and reduce its size a little bit and maybe round a few corners here and there. Some of the fancy plumbing work is in the background

The hot project is the downpipe, maybe some progress on that by the weekend. The tricky part is going to be the wastegate crossover pipe. Once that is done I can start buttoning things up.

Ok, quiet again but still livin' in the garage. If I only had a bathroom and a microwave out there...

I walked out of the garage on my way to work this mornin' and saw a nice fat downpipe nestled between the Cayman and the garage door.

We got it pretty close the first time but John stopped by last night and we made one adjustment. He went home with three well-marked pieces and dropped off one beautifully fitting downpipe this morning! Thanks John!!

I will post some pics later, this grin should last well past lunch time.

You got it then. I came by this morning about 4:45, dropped it and ran. If you get a chance to mark where you want the O2 bung I will try to weld that in and finish up the welds tonight.

Looking really good.

I can't wait to see her finished.

Ok, so the downpipe is all but finished, we have a bit of work to do on the crossover pipe to the wastegate but even that is looking up as of this evening.

Image

The o2 bung is marked and the "adjusted" section is in place and fits great. We are getting close to finalizing the DP and light is starting to flicker at the end of the tunnel.

Image

I'll be continuing my tedious little projects through the weekend - which starts right NOW - gotta love a 4-10 work week :woowoo:
