I'd absolutely clean it using a wire wheel before using a flapper disc. Might be worth it to get one for a drill too, lower power and adjustable speeds which might not disturb the metal any more than necessary.

Thanks for the tip. I do have a couple wire wheels for my drill.

Absolutely use one on a drill. You can run it full tilt in a drill and it won't spin fast enough to really do anu harm. I just had this conversation with a good friend this morning haha.

Thanks to you both. This is new to me, so you won’t insult me at all by offering even the most basic of tips.

Considering that I would be applying a rust correction product like POR15, am I looking to just knock down the high spots?

I'd say mostly just looking to remove anything that's going to flake off on its own. Try to keep as much metal as possible and find the thin spots so you can repair appropriately. The rust converter will help rescue metal to some extent but want to make sure you find all the thin spots first.

Spent some time trying to clear out the wiring harnesses that run along the door sills.

This is what scares me the most about all this mess. This is the bundle going to the driver’s seat. It’s a wonder it all worked.

Ruh-roh.

This is the sort of easter egg that leads to scope creep.

Yes, but it feels I’m already way deep into the scope creep phase at this point, what with the suspension work, HVAC swap, etc. [FACE WITH TEARS OF JOY] I have wrapped all of the bundles in new cloth tap and I’m crossing my fingers that I have not disturbed them too much. I have not seen any sections where the wire insulation has flaked off.

Last weekend I managed to scrape all of the original sound proofing material off. Driver’s side rear floor had more rust than I thought it would, but not nearly as bad as the front. I also was able to remove the sticky residue left behind in the areas where the metal was in good shape, but failed to snap a pic afterwards.

Next up is to find all the holes and thin spots and start prepping for POR15. I plan to use a combo of mesh and several coats of POR15 on those areas. I think I am going to coat the entire area under the carpets in it. It’ll be black, but it’s all covered up by carpet and trim.

Nice work, what is your plan for sound deadening?

I was thinking of using Kilmat, but am open to suggestions. The 80 mil stuff comes in a 36 sf pack and 50 mil comes in a 50 sf pack. Both are ~$60. Not sure what thickness is needed.

I'm very interested in what the group has to say about viable Dynamat alternatives.

The KilMat stuff gets good reviews and is cheaper than Dynamat. Have seen a few threads here and on MG of people using it as well.

Ran across this product too. Tempted to use just this, rather than both sound deadening and jute. I would use adhesive and double up on the firewall and areas under foot. Thoughts?

Used this on a 65’ bug And really made it livable, didn’t get it close to anything hot but was easy to apply and affordable!

First two POR15 prep steps are done (degrease and metal prep). It’s supposed to be “bone dry” before applying POR15, so I called it a day to let it dry some more on its own.

I had a little time in the garage tonight, but not enough to really get much done. So, I started to look at the clearance issues I am going to have with my euro non-S2/V6 front bumper and the S2 intercooler. I've heard mixed opinions on whether it can be done and most say go with an S2/V6 bumper and it'll fit without issues. But that's easier said than done. Supplies are short and prices are really high, when you include shipping.

If (and it's a big if) I were to try and trim my current bumper, it looks like I would have to remove 3 of the 6 lower grill support braces and a whole bunch of the parts of the bumper that surrounds the lower grills. And I would have to make the middle section of the lower grills much thinner (front to back depth). Does anyone have pics of this bumper after trimming to fit in front of the S2 intercooler?

I really hate the thought of cutting up a euro bumper that is in pretty good shape. What would you guys do?

Found some time today to work on the floor pans. POR15 is on. 3 coats on the driver side, 2 on the passenger side. Next up, decide what sound and heat material to use.

Thanks! I used this stuff I found on Amazon. Seems to get good reviews. I used some Permatex spray adhesive and foil duct tape that I had on hand for the install. I might use what I have left over to line the hatch area too.

jbrentd's 2nd Chance CQ - 3B Swap/Susp Overhaul In Progress

Postby jbrentd » Sun Dec 20, 2020 6:03 pm

Work has been keeping busy and out of town a lot lately, but I managed to spend the afternoon cleaning and organizing the garage and cleaning the CQ’s carpet. It’s not perfect, but much better than before. Rust stains are tough to get out.

It feels like I went 10 rounds with it, but the 7A harness has been removed. Could have used a couple more hands.

That's well and truly one of the worst jobs on the car. Now that it's done things will get easier.

Or at least, that's what I keep telling myself haha
