I actually did something with this car this weekend. The motor has been using oil badly at idle and after decel since last winter when I beat it hard over the mountain in a ridiculous blizzard. I did not think it was the turbo. The engine ran great, had perfect compression and always started, so I was a bit confused. It did not use any oil when actually driving down the road, but would load up when sitting.

I mothballed it and drove it every couple weeks to keep things lubed up.

Pulled the motor saturday and tore it down. Nothing obviously bad, but several of the valve seals were dumping oil past valves. Turbo is dry and tight. The valve seals surely look like the source of the oil. I'm not sure why, but I did mess around with this head a lot with grinding valve faces, self porting ETC. The valve guides had similar wear to what they did the last time I checked it, so I dont know what changed.

I pulled the pistons, and everything looks great in the bottom end. Ring gaps were perfect. The oil control rings were pretty much plugged with soot, I assume this is from its veggie days.

The plan is to clean up the rings, replace rod bearings, and put a good, unmolested, low mile head on it.

I still need to measure the bores, but they looks really good to the naked eye.

just randomly decided to check local craigslist for parts. There was a mk3 tdi jetta running well with 149k miles for $200 in my town. I called up the local tow dude, told him to head over there and give the dude $200 and bring it to my house. Should have another shitbox in the driveway when I get home. People want like $300 for used heads.

Yes, I'll take a whole running car for $200 Alex.

I'll probably be selling the 90 when I get it all back into good health. Too many other things going on. Bought a clean 96 tacoma in Reno Nevada. Going to put the ALH from my jetta in that. The jetta is getting too rusty to inspect next year.

No shortage of shit to do around here.

...but in Seattle the windshield would probably not be the only thing holding the roof on because all the pillars are literally not existing anymore.

That being said, you can get an inspected and decent looking mk4 TDI jetta here for $1000-$1500. Rusty non inspectable ones are 200-500. Makes me want to hord them all.

The few remaining mk3 cars around here look like they have been pressure washed with hydrochloric acid for the last 25 years.

I finally found some time to clean up the pistons and install some new goetze rings. Pulled the car out and gave it a thorough wash, forgot that it's quite pretty.

I am going to put a complete low mile head on it from a parts mk3 I have, so I started pulling that engine as well.

My goal is to have it ready to sell this fall. I dont want to see it sit around anymore.

If anyone is interested, I'm ready to make it a priority and pass it on to someone else.

I would definitely be interested. What price are you thinking and when do you plan on letting it go?

This car is FINALLY back in my shop after a LONG hiatus. Got it all washed up and have the engine re-assembled and ready to stab back in. It will be ready for sale in the early spring, maybe even by winter.

Yes, the same one.

I got the engine in and running this weekend, it was really good to see it come back to life. Now it needs quite a lot of work from sitting for 4 years.

Doing a little deep cleaning after sitting for a few years. It feels good to get this old girl back into shape. Will will surely be ready for sale by tax return time. All refreshed and ready to drive anywhere.

Got a break in the cold this weekend, so I scrubbed and pressure washed the entire interior, seats and all with Spray 9, which works great. I put the interior in my friends firewood kiln overnight to dry.

Then I scrubbed and washed/wet vacuumed the entire interior. This car probably hasn't been this clean since 1991.

I am getting close to wrapping up the resurrections on this old girl. Put some miles on it last night, drove it over the mountain in the snow. Wow, I really remember why I love this car. Tons or flickable torque and classic old audi snow manners.

It has been awesome to get this old girl back into shape, but bittersweet since its basically sold already. Looks like it will be doing another cross-country trip to a new home in Washington, hopefully within a month or so. I have a few other details to iron out before it is ready to go, but it is close.

Well, this car is too cool, and I have really enjoyed driving it getting it ready to sell. I actually had it sold, but had to back out because I decided I need to keep an old audi in my life. Will sell me other daily driver and this old girl will help me beat the prices at the pump!

Good for you! My S4 gets picked up by it’s new owner tomorrow, it’s hard to let them go :(
It’s going to a good home and that helps…
