[DIY] Window Regulator/Motor Swap (B3/typ89 Coupe)

Difficulty = 2:10, aka 3  while taking your sweet time in the sunshine.

Helps to have another set of hands around to jimmy the frame in/out of the door, but don't sweat it if you're tackling this alone.

Not much to do here except first pull out a handful of nuts and screws that only go in one place, and then later replace in reverse order.

After removing the interior pull handle and switch, and the Phillips screws from the door card, pull up and toward you to remove the door card from the frame.

This is a great chance to clean/treat your window glass and inspect the wiring looms for damage. Can't hurt anything to brush surfaces with a clean wire brush and put a dab of dielectric grease on the prongs before re-installing the switches. If you're feeling really spiffy, plan ahead and replace the switch lightbulb.

Tools Required:
ratchet drive wrench
T40 torx socket
HW4 allen key/socket
medium size/length Phillips screwdriver
side cutters
zip ties (~3)
roll, electrical tape
10mm combination wrench
10mm socket
13mm socket
thin string/bailer twine (~12")

Pro tip: test your replacement motor before you install, especially if it's used; better to have it "stuck" in the fully up position than down ;)

IME it's best to disconnect your battery (+) terminal before removing/replacing your switches but could be totally unnecessary.

Easy peasy Phillips screw to remove.

Fish for the angle of the dangle, you'll get 'er in there. ;)

Pull back gently but firmly to remove the switch. Then, the two harnesses go in opposite directions to separate.

Holds the window motor in place. Easy peasy; ensure you replace before reinstalling the door card.

Remove and set aside. Only goes one way. Don't go full tight the first time to ensure proper alignment.

Lower front clip, make sure you pay attention before you remove as to how it goes in. Look up, from underneath to get the full view. Simple, out-in. Don't go full tight the first time to ensure proper alignment.

Take note of the zip ties, and reinstall when replacing the new parts.

Also worth taking note of: there are about 8 rubber grommets that protect the plastic clips on the inside of the doorcards from abrasion on the sheet metal. Make sure these are in place.

Remove and replace spacer in same orientation/position as you found it initially.

String to align door lock plunger through door card.

Make sure the collar goes on the outside notch so the cable has something solid holding the pull assembly back when you go to open the door. Can be a bit of a bitch to reassemble but is doable. :)

Also, if the sandwitch/stud/isolator things that hold the motor to the door are broken or flimsy, McMaster Item # 4403k68 is a perfect replacement and are much stiffer. http://www.mcmaster.com/#catalog/118/1382/=mtysf6

Thanks to jaesunel on MG for originally finding these.

Great write-up!
