number 13? its oil seal...
derracuda

Post by derracuda »

yeah, you just need the oil seal to go along with the conversion.

what's funny, is that i ended up swapping this stuff all back because i went with the 5kt dash that needs an electronic sender to work :P

Are those taillights original red or has been red faded? (don't know the right word) :slap: How hard is to swap with these:

derracuda wrote:ok, the biggest break of the week here. i'm putting in a 20v 200 transmission which has the electronic pickup for the speedo... so when i pulled the speedo sensor out thinking it read the toothed gear down inside, i found it didn't :( then i started looking at the way it sat inside the tranny when i had the axle drive cup out.... hmm, looked at the old 4kq 016... hmm. so out came axle seals and BAM the speedo ring thingies interchange!!! :woowoo: the hole in the 200 trans is even threaded for the old style insert 8)

and nothing else needs to be changed except those 2 parts?
Image
i think i'll do it this weekend, but don't want bad surprise :D

Get a new axle seal as well. You'll replace those two parts with 3 parts. The round gear, the gear that replaces the pickup, and the cap that threads in where the pickup went and holds the pickup gear.

I was surprised thats all that was needed. When I helped Nathan out (I basically watched, but still), I was impressed with how easy of a swap it was.

ok, so to put the 200 tranny with the 4k dash, you need to swap out more than the sender unit???

Gosh, this is what I was asking when i made a thread that said....~" is it a complete drop in swap?" and everybody told me yes..

yup, thanks, I appriciate it

That would have been nice to know 3 weeks ago, when the tranny was on the floor instead of in the car with half shafts on it, and all the other crap attatched to it.. Which is why I asked the question to begin with.

that said, it dosnt look to hard to switch out..

*sigh* since i'm stuck at the shop with nothing better to do, i've been researching my options for the interior.

i really wanted to find a nice euro tweed interior, but that's looking slimmer all the time. a couple of weeks ago though, a customer gave me some stock gray velour seats from his 4kq (since he put in Q-script), and i tore one front seat down completely to get an inner look at things. i've done a little sewing on a machine before and didn't have too hard a time with it... so i'm thinking of trying my hand at recovering my seats.

material options....
i found this place in portland,OR.. not too far from my home, that sells colors similar to the euro tweed combination..
http://www.perfectfit.com/product.asp?P ... =15994&l2=

if you follow that link, the colors i'm thinking of are
black with marble inserts...

or black with scarlet inserts. i called and asked for some samples and amazingly enough, the scarlet matches my red wrinkle valve cover.... which is similar in color to the red leather in the commemorative edition cars.

my other thoughts are...

black and gray alcantara(ultrasuede),

black around the edges

perforated inserts..

lastly, cover everything in zebra...

My money is on zebra... Then you can match the urq (Actually i'm not sure if your urq has the zebra, but you can always put it in if you want it...)

My buddy had an old school saab that he re did all the seats in, it turned out way nice and he did a fake suede leather style... Are you planning on taking a dis-assembled seat and cutting all your pieces to match them? or are you just going to go ape and free style it?
derracuda

Post by derracuda »

the safest bet for me is to dis-assemble the seat coverings and use them as tracers. that's what i did on the suede shifter boot i made once. it turned out real slick

well, I'll just be disappointed.

A friend here in town has an allroad special ordered with factory green/cream plaid cloth. It's pretty sweet, and took about $2k off the MSRP of the car.

LOL, i'd never go zebra :D it was just too funny not to post.

i'm really diggin' the perforated ultrasuede though!

well, i drove her about 10 miles today :D :D

coupla' things... the header wrap smokes up a storm when it gets hot... so i'm hoping that will clear out soon. i don't know if it got something on it at some point or what.. but blech, it stinks.

it runs smooth.. and quiet! all new wheel bearings and stuff should i guess. the only noises i notice are the tires, but i don't know how old they are being that i got them second hand.

the clutch slave is probably going to need to be changed.. it's lazy for surezels.

the front steering is whack, and i think i know why. when i cut the steering arms and rotated them, i also lowered them... a few inches. i did that antissipating the car being lowered and it not being a big deal.. well, it causes the front tires to scrub when turned very far. kind of annoying, so if i don't lower it soon, i think i'll find another set of front struts to molest and take care of that.

uh.. hmm, it moves decently :P i didn't jump on it, but got on the throttle a bit, hit 8psi and 80mph without really trying. definitely nice 8)

i should have my new air filter for it here in a couple days and i'll get the MAF filly mounted and show pics of the partition i built to keep the air filter away from the manifolds heat. on my test drive today it proved very efficient. i also checked the IM temps and it's hot to the touch, so i think i'll definitely be in the market for an 034 phenolic spacer soon. and while i'm at it, i'm going to redo the throttle body/charge tube junction and weld a metal pipe for the ISV to the charge air pipe, and get a silicone reducer instead of the rubber line. then my entire intake tract will have silicone hoses and i'll never have to mess with it again (especially since the intake isn't being bombarded with crankcase fumes/oil.

so, in a word, am i happy with my conversion.... YES! 8)

a few things to wrap up, and a few more upgrades and this car will be just about done for a long time to come (hopefully..lol) and then i can concentrate on my alpine 4kq and URQ :D

I say get some recaros or omps and wrap the headliner and dash and pillars in black ultrasuede

well, i think i won't ever have air delivery problems ..lol. i ordered up a 9" long air filter with a 3" inlet... but they didn't specify the diameter... and the pic made it look like it tapered.. great! well, no taper, but it still fits... but just. and no, the filter doesn't rub under the hood.
Image

this filter is an AEM dryflow filter. i've been hearing too much stuff about K&N oils getting on MAF wires and causing running issues, so i figured for about the same money, i'd skip the worries. (and yes, that is backed up by information from my friend who works for a toyota dealership and them having problems with cars that have K&N's)

i needed to separate the hot air off the exhaust from the intake, so this is what i came up with. use cardboard to make the initial template..

Image

cut out piece of aluminum..
Image

i needed a clean bend in the middle, so i laid it across the hitch of our trailer and used a block of wood to pinch it, creating a ghetto break.
Image

Image

put a little flare in the bottom to help clear the inner fender, and you can see the rear attachment screw hole...
Image

next up i needed a little space for the compressor housing of the turbo, so i used the metal corner and a couple blocks of wood to come up with this..

and here's some more shots of the engine bay pretty much complete. i realized i didn't really have any of it finished.

the left over things are like the fuel lines which need to be shorter. they are kind of routed funny, but if it'll work for now, that's great. i have more important stuff to deal with :P
