Introduction Thread and build planning

Post by Karrm »

My name is Karl, I was told to join the project pad asap today while at a car show, so here I am. I have owned far too many German cars, although this is my first VAG. My other car right now is an e36 BMW set up for autocross.

Recently I picked up a 91 Audi 200 avant. I saw it for sale and decided I needed to get rid of my rust bucket dd and make it my new dd. After picking it up I realized it didn't seem to be running all that great and it started very weak. I eventually did a compression test and found 0 compression in cylinder 1. The car has been sitting in the garage with the front end removed ever since.

The engine is nearly finished although I am still trying to come up with a plan as far as the ECU/ignition/turbo setup. Trying to avoid breaking the bank since the engine already set me back much more than I was expecting.

And of course, pictures.

Karl,
Nice meeting you today and finding another KY 200 Avant!

You should definitely make a build thread under the 'Projects' section on the first page and keep us updated with your build!

This is definitely the place to be when you have a 200 20v. Welcome.

Any idea what caused the hole in the valve? Was anything else damaged? Looking forward to more details. Glad you have picked it up and decided to bring it back to life.

Nick it was nice meeting you too, I never would have expected to see another 200 Avant anywhere near me. I will definitely be making a build thread once I get everything together and get started on it. As for the damaged valve I am still unsure about that. The exhaust valve guides were worn but I highly doubt that could have caused something like that to happen. I'm a little worried it might happen again since I can't track down what caused it.

It's a show called Southern Roots. It was at the Florence Y'all this year. It's a little bit of a rice fest, but I enjoy making people ponder over what the hell exactly my car is. :D  I'm not too big on going to shows, but I'm actually 2 for 2 on introducing other 200 owners to theprojectpad!

Unfortunately this year there was only one 200 20VT Avant, as Karl's has the motor out if I am correct.

Yeah it was better than I expected really. Everything is full of rice these days, but there were a lot of actual well set up cars. Your car is awesome though, completely didn't expect to see that there.

Yeah my motor is out and has been for months lol. Hopefully have it done this winter though. Goal is by Christmas.

Welcome Karl. I can tell you the valve just burned, its not uncommon. It probably developed a crack or a gap. when it has a leak while the cylinder has compressed fire in it, it tends to cut or burn through as it leaks and acts like a blowtorch. I have replaced a valve on a V8Q that looked the same, so it doesn't even have to be turbocharged to happen.

Secondly, I couldn't help noticing the first picture was from SLC. As I live there, I recognized the mountain range immediately......story?

After talking to Marc I have discovered it is most likely due to the poorly designed stock exhaust manifold. I already knew it directed flow of 1 and 5 at each other but I didn't realize it would be that hard on the valves, just thought it wouldn't flow that well.

Haha yeah there is a little bit of a story here, not too much. I bought the car from SLC and drove it back home. This exact picture was after getting stuck in traffic heading south and the engine overheated barfing coolant everywhere. Stopped on the side of the road to let it cool off. Gauges didn't work at the time and it turned out that the fan fuse was blown... Among other problems lol. It was a bit of an adventure to say the least but I had a good time.

As far as mileage I'm not 100% sure. The car came with 2 gauge clusters, 1 with under 100k miles, the other with closer to 200k I believe.

So after talking with Marc I think I'm looking at doing a k24 7000 with a billet compressor wheel or a k24 7200. Already blew through my budget on the engine so trying to get a decent setup for as cheap as possible now. Anyone have experience with this setup or any advice?

Are you planning on a Motronic tune? If you go standalone you'll want to dial it in on the conservative side to save stock rods with the Volvo k24.

Otherwise, those are good options for turbos. A Holset (HY35, HX40 ish) is also worth considering.

Yeah planning on running just a tune on the stock 3b ecu for now. Don't have stock rods so no worries on that side of things. My big limitation is the engine ate up all the budget, may change things around for more power down the road.

Well that's good to know (about the rods). If you still have the stock turbo, I'd just run that until you have funds for something bigger without compromise. If it were me and I didn't mind a little more lag (and next year it will be) I would buy that 034 manifold that is on eBay for $250 right now and throw a Holset HX35 or HY35 on. All you'd have to do after that is fabricate some oil lines and a downpipe, get some injectors, and have Marc set you up with one of his tunes for a gt30r or similar. You'd be making 350 whp or more for around $1500.

I haven't seen this manifold on eBay, is it a genuine manifold or a knockoff? Since I've still got the stock 3b setup Marc doesn't feel comfortable touching a gt30 tune, I would have to convert to AAN at the very least, which seems a bit expensive. I would prefer to go standalone in that case but I definitely don't have those funds.

Why would you have to go aan or standalone? Marc has the basic tune for a turbo that size. I don't see why he can't make aa chip tune around that unless he's concerned with running distributor.

That manifold is genuine. It's an 034 manifold which is made in China, but the quality is acceptable. I'm thinking of buying it myself in fact. I had one on my sedan and it worked well.

He was concerned with running the distributor. Too much cost to really be worth swapping to a whole AAN setup, might as well go standalone at that point. Unless there is another way I don't know about. I won't ninja it for myself if you want it but I may have to pick it up if you pass.

I dunno if this is what you're referring to (and if so, please disregard), but you wouldn't have to swap an entire AAN setup. The 3B can be run with just an AAN ECU and COP conversion. You'd just have to swap some of the pins in your harness around to match the ECU and use the hall sensor in your distributor as the cam position sensor.

What I was told was I needed the AAN ECU, AAN wiring harness, coils, a few sensors are different, don't remember how I was supposed to get the cam position since I was told to ditch the distributor completely. If there was an affordable swap to cop I may be interested.
