Long time coming 85urq

Post by auditrippin »

Hello to those left reading car project forums.

I had a previous build here for my 83 urq that stalled and the car was eventually sold.

This page will cover the car that pushed it out of the garage and the beginning of resurrecting an old posters car that never got the chance to finish it.

While scrolling marketplace one morning I came across an add for an 85 audi quattro. I live in PHX AZ and old audis are pretty sparce here. There was one grainy picture of a red urq on an autocross course and a pretty high list price with "not negotiable" along with very little information on the car. So I had to send a message. The lady got back to me and we set a time to look at it.

The car was sitting at an independent mechanic that worked on a little bit of everything odd. Here is what it looked like:

The 85 urq has always been a dream of mine. I much prefer the newer interior/ electrical. My wife talked to the seller inside the waiting room while I looked over the car and hit it off. Once I came inside I got some of the back story on the car. It belonged to her late partner who was big into Audis around the late 90's and early 2000's. Unfortunately he had some health problems and never got back to this car. We talked audis for a while and I told her my thoughts on what I would like to do with the car. Her partner was going to 3.6ltr V8 swap another urq, but sold it. He then turned his intentions to this car. I explained to her I thought the car was better off with the I5 turbo and that would be my direction. She agreed with me. My wife gave me the nod to make an offer and she accepted.

After getting home I found the car belonged to Jeff Goggins, also known as Audi dudi. I was able to find that 12v.org saved what appears to be his own project pages. He was also active on the AF mailing list and MG up until 2008.

Now with the car purchased I had to go get it. Once I picked up the car the seller informed me she had some parts to go with it. She actually drove a minivan to my house. The seats were removed from the van and it was stuffed to the gills with totes of car parts. Not all audi, but mostly.

From this post here you can see the totes and some of the parts that came with the car. There is some pretty cool NOS urq parts buried in these totes. As well as pretty much everything you would need to 3.6 ltr V8 swap a B2 including the manual flywheel and V8. Also came with all of the WX parts missing from the engine bay and the WX head still sealed in the shipping box from a machine shop in California that rebuilt it 10+ years ago.

I purchased the 85 urq on Sept. 29th 2023. For over a year I kept it tucked away in the garage and the only thing I did was condition and treat the leather interior. During that time I got the engine assembled on the 83 urq and was having an issue where the car would start and then immediately cut out and die. After a couple days of diagnosis the engine became very hard to turn over. So I tore it down again and found a massive vac leak from a split hose in the process. So that is why it would start and then die. Sent the bottom end off for a refresh, which was completed. The shop found no damage, but replaced the bearings in it. We are assuming dirt or sand. I did sand blast the intake manifold. I washed it several times and ran it through the dishwasher even. Lesson learned I guess. When I got the block back I was kinda over the 20v/ CIS/ mouse eaten 83 wiring. So I posted it for sale, got a good offer and shipped it and a ton of parts off to a new home.

Now to start working on the 85. Out of the house garage it comes and into the shop to remove what is left in the engine bay.

My red headed step child free labor. He owed me after after I assisted with his SRM K24 stage 3 kit install on his B5 S4.

Once the engine was pulled I started collecting parts and going through my parts stash....
Found an AAN and had it shipped to me from the east coast. It came with some parts and a light refresh. But was mostly just a long block to me and for my goals.

Here is what was installed on it and sits untested:
-ARP Head studs and Main studs
-7a intake and exhaust cams with new lifters
-IE forged connecting rods 144x20
-Coated rod and main bearings

Great packaging by the seller.

Now that the engine is here I can start figuring out what else I need to make it work in the urq. Time to order parts and lean on some forum members for pieces I may be missing. While I did that I had already decided to run the V belt system and go with an RR type build for the engine. I also wanted to convert the brakes to vac assists. Ultra performance is pretty much a one stop shop for this so I ordered everything from them. Also got my hands on a cq PS rack, v6 PS pump, Cq PS pump bracket as well as a cq alternator bracket and alternator. The rack immediately went out for a rebuild as did the PS hoses.

The crank pulley was taken off the shelf from a low mile AZ 4kq I parted and a hardened crank cog was installed on the engine with new timing belt/WP.

Here is some pics of the engine as I started adding parts and looking it over. I do not like the ARP main bolts are a little longer and the PO drilled out the cq windage tray. But it is what it is and should be fine.

With the engine removed it was time to start cleaning.

Image

Once cleaned now onto starting the brake master and vac booster swap installation. Might as well pull the blower fan, clean and reseal everything. I have found zero dead mice in this car. yay!

Image

Of coarse while I was installing the new clutch master and vac booster under the dash our little friend the gas pedal pivot mount thing the bushes ride in fell out. Bushings were toast. So those got replaced as well.

Now what about controlling brake bias to the rear calipers? Got 1/8 aluminum plate and started trimming out a bracket to mount a wilwood prop valve.

Test fitting. Had to trim down the top right rounded ear off the bracket as it would not allow the over flow tank to sit exactly flat.

Finished product:

While finishing up the brakes I also installed the rebuilt PS rack along with a firewall brace. Remember that time 034 threatened to sue the guy making and selling copies of their firewall brace? Well I got one before he had to stop. lol. Granted, it required a little but of messaging to fit, but it did.

Now to decide what steering arms I want to run for the front.... I have new 85+ 4kq arms and new OEM in the package urq arms. I believe with the EFI MS downpipe I can run the 4kq control arms and not have to use the bent urq unit. I hope that is the case. Guess I will find out.

At this point I should give a run down of the build and the direction this project is going. I do have a complete XCEL file with all of the parts I have purchased, where from, PN's, cost, etc. I have not added up all of the costs as, well.... Yikes. May or may not post that...

Transmission:
-S4Parts rebuilt 1st and 2nd gear 01E transmission with O1E linkage
Image
-Hersh 01E shifter bracket
-4kq rear diff and driveshaft (parted a 60k mile AZ 4kq, car was bent in the middle from PO being an idiot)
-EFI MS replica RS2 mounts
-Billet Steel flywheel/ clutch kit from EFI MS
-USP Clutch Line & Metal Slave Conversion For Audi B5 S4

So lets stay with the 01E swap for now.

Out comes the stock urq transmission and rear diff.

Image

Rebuilt the rear urq CV's and in goes the 60k mile 4kq rear subframe and rear diff.

Image

Uhm, crap. The 4kq rear diff hubs are 100mm and the urq inner CV's are 108mm. Ok, lets swap hubs over from the urq. Passenger side swaps in great. Drivers side.... Well there is a gear attached to it and and they are not the same from diff to diff...

Image

So I dig into my tote of axles. Start measuring everything. 4kq rear axles won't work as the outer CV is too small for the urq wheel hubs. Cannot swap over inner CV's as the female CV spline on the 4kq is smaller than the urq inner half shalf shaft male splines. So I sleep on it for a day or 2.

4kq rear axle vs urq

Image

Start measuring again. Hmmm... Looks like I can use the inner urq female CV spline with 4kq CV ball bearings and cage! lets try that.

Image

Hmm. I think that is gonna work! Now I gotta remove the passenger side urq hub from the diff and do the same thing as I can't have 100mm on one side and 108mm on the other. Also placed an order for multiple CV boots with 100mm flange as I did not have any laying around. Hope one of them fits over the slightly larger urq half shaft.

That is all for now. Currently working 2 weeks in San Antonio and then I get a week at home. Just finished up my first week in San Antonio so I actually have some free time to make these updates.
I have done a lot of research before I started this build. But please if i am F'ing something up call me out so I can correct it.

With the little 2860 I am shooting for 400chp. I think that will be plenty for a fun weekend car. No AC planned ATM. But I would like to keep an open mind about possibly retofitting something later.
