You should have come over to look at my bumper.....would have been a lot easier the way they did mine.

Good luck!

Nick's Black 90 - Fiberglass Help please :) :)

Post by nsimps »

Went to Darin's to take a look at the right way to do things :) got a few photos and even scored another bumper! A big thanks goes out to Darin for his generosity! Hopefully next week I'll be able to get things sorted out. I'll be taking my time with cutting this time around :)
here are a few pics of how it's supposed to be done:

Nick's Black 90 - Fiberglass Help please :) :)

Post by nsimps »

Current state: started it up couple nights ago, charged the battery and let it sleep in the garage :) next is getting it back to decent running status and front bumper on. Planning on doing a matte black vinyl wrap before BBQ and getting shoes for the 17's. My wife doesnt like the current wheel setup. She never has an opinion so I'm going to run with this one ;)

Re: Nick's Black 90 - Making Progress

Had some time last night to demo fit with the bumper I previously ruined. It looks like things are going to work out fairly nicely. There will be quite a lot of filler and sanding to do but in the end I think it will be worth it. I'm hoping to start surgery on the actual bumper tonight but most likely it will be when my wife goes out of town for a week in July.

After the test run looked like it was going to work the actual bumper fit has started.

Looking like it will work out well. Just need to get glass material and a few evenings more to get it finalized.

Re: Nick's Black 90 - Bumper surgery underway

Post by nsimps »

After some good talks with the folks at West System I have decided to go with their GFlex (http://www.westsystem.com/ss/g-flex-epoxy/) product to finish up the ends and fill the gap across the front. The reason for using that is because there is fibreglass and ABS to deal with. Having never done any fiberglass work I am will be doing a small test run to see how it works before doing the bumper. Wish me luck!

Well, this thing should get quite a bit of attention next week as the our daily driver A4 has been sold. That leaves this as my new daily :) Next week should have some good progress!

After selling our A4 and with the threat of rain today, the bumper got a few more rivets and off I went to work. Good thing is it's only a 6 mile drive and a few co-workers live in the same area so if it didn't make it I was covered. Seems to run good considering it sat for 8 or so months. I forgot how cool it sounds and wanted to just keep driving :)

The G-Flex showed up at West Marine here in Salt Lake so hopefully I can get over there to pick it up and start the next phase of the bumper project. Considering how little fiberglass experience I have this part will be taken slow and steady.

That looks like it's coming along nicely. Sorry if it's been mentioned or asked already but what bumper is that, and is that a B3 or B4 bumper for the donor? Looks like B3 but....

Thanks :) it is an RS something or other from... I'll have to look through my paperwork for the catalog :) The donor is a B3. Darin (Audilard) has something similar that i pictured earlier in this thread which is what gave me the inspiration.

The G-Flex seems to be working nicely. I am only mixing about 50ml at a time and then letting it tack up before going over again. Hopefully I'll be able to get all the epoxy down tonight and then sand in the morning. And with a shred of luck, paint tomorrow night!

Finished (hopefully) with the epoxy coat. Tomorrow afternoon I should be good to sand it down and shape the two sides, which will be the most difficult part probably. Here are the end results of tonight's work:

Got the first coat of primer on last night and couldn't wait to test fit to see how it looks! So far so good, I may do a bit of sanding on the pass side to even out the lip thing, but other than that it is what it is. It will look even better once the car is all one color and a certain set of 17's are installed :) Having driven it already up to Salt Lake I found out quickly that the front is pretty low and things like speed bumps and angled entry ways are going to be a problem. And it's not even lowered! I guess that means bagging it is out of the question  I guess if a set of coil overs makes it onto the car it will be still sitting at stock height. This has been a fun project to work on and I hope to get the rest of the body ready for vinyl. I would really like to at least get started on vinyl this week as I have all the time in the world between the hours of 17:00 - 08:00. I just wonder how Hank goes without sleep, how do you do that again??? Onto the pics:

This one shows the lip that could use some sanding/shaping. This side I went a little overboard with the rivets which resulted in more build up of epoxy which then led to this. It doesn't look horrible, but does need a little love:

That there is a roll of 3m 1080 vinyl wrap that will be going on the 90 over the next few days :)

I'm taking this thing back! ;)

Yes, the idea is to eventually have a big FMIC eventually. I'm doing this a little backwards but it's still fun! :)

Looks good so far. The only thing I see that need "fixing" is the the wheel well gap at the bottom of the freshly modified bumper.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks! I haven't swapped the lower ball joints so the gap will be there until then. Is that what you were talking about?

Tonight I wet sand the imperfections out of the hood, roof, spoiler and trunk then maybe, just maybe, start wrapping late tonight :)
