Well, what are your thoughts on the hood. Are you happy with it over all? Does it fit nicer than others?

Any chance of getting it copied?

You know D-man, I'm not diggin the hood :( Maybe I'll change my mind when the hood be white, but right now the panda-look just isn't floatin my boat.

D-style, the car is shaping up nicely! Good work putting it all together, and your attention to detail is awesome.

I think painting the hood white will really help the look of the hood, Marc's car looked really nice with that hood painted all body color.

ok, first off, this hood is total crap. it looks cool and all, but the quality is among the worst i've evar seen...seriously. germany should be ashamed that it was made there. it was a hassle to fit, it doesn't fit totally right, and is just overall dissappointing. right now it's only temporary. i don't have the time and $$ to splurge on painting it up right but i wanted to put it on the same (i've only had it since last october!)

. i have someone lined up to buy it off me, but that will be more towards this winter. the next step body for my car wise is going to be the full on SQ kit, hood, fenders, bumpers, everything. like i've stated before, i want to make what looks like a factory widebody, like the E30 M3's. i even plan to stick with the stock rear spoiler, i think it will be nice. everything will be color coded properly and done up right, i'm still waiting to see where i can find all the stock SQ bumper grilles and stuff so it looks 100%.


i'm not painting my wheels black, but i have a customer who i'm going to be building a 20vt 4kq for and he wants this hood for his car. it's metallic gray and we're going to do the black out treatment. taillights, tint, stainless side trim is going to get tinted or blacked out, black out the non-used silver portions in the euros, and likely he's going to get the same R38's and paint the spokes body color and leave the lips machined, i think it's going to look totally sick!

The SQ bumper grilles are VERY FREAKIN EXPENSIVE....Even the little ones in the hood. I've priced them, Martyn @ VAGParts.

I think its fair to say that any SQ part is going to VERY FREAKIN EXPENSIVE. Except for stupid little things like oil filters and exhaust hangers (which also happen to be the only 2 parts available for my 100LS at the dealer) :tard: :-D

The headlights are pretty cheap too. I even have a spare set!

Derek - Marc said his hood was PITA to get "finished" and ready for paint... I had same thoughts about replacing it at WF when some helpful person decided to push the hood down on opposite corner from the stiff/short prop... cracked glass (underneath) using handy golf umbrella since and always have shade on AX Grids but will add "Dasher-Style" hood prop ASAP. Hood is there to stay on my car.

You should keep the hood... I think w/ high boost turbo the extra air coming in above IC is really useful and heat from turbo has a place to escape (really cool being able to see big turbo and WG on the 20V setup too!)

Just paint it with some white bombs so it'll look pretty in the pix you send us and get it done up proper when you can!

Oh, add some of that Summit sticky heat shield directly above the turbo - Marc's/mine started cooking paint off - might not be so close on 20vt.

Now where did the OE inserts along the front edge come from???

the grilles came with the hood. but i recall a guy at a place in NJ, i think the name is turbo5tech.com or something made them. they are really cheesy unfortunately and sag with heat :( when i first got them i layed them on some uneven surface and just laying there (in october!) they warped slightly. i tell ya, the quality on some of this stuff is unbelieveably poor. if only we had someone good with fiberglass to make a mold and pop some of this stuff out, i know it would sell. i always get asked about where to get one when people see it.


and about the headlights, they are the same as the mid 80's euro quantums, off the shelf piece i guess 8)

for sure.. I want one bad.. Its just not worth the cake for shotty workmanship.. I gotta do something though, my hood is turning yellow above the new turbo...

BTW, Direk... Your car is lookin mighty fine... im jealous.

Any idea how much all of that SQ stuff is gonna cost ya Derek? i'm sure it'll look sick, but I'm afraid of the arm-and-leg costs.

I ended up using plain old expanded metal for the grills on mine w/epoxy to hold em in. Works gewd.

well, after finally finding my thread, i shall now update it.



ok, now i don't know who at meyle thought they should call the new control arm bushings "improved" because as you can see in this pic....they aren't all that hot, and they are only one year old, never seen slicks or a race track. never any issues to wear them out except for hard driving, and even so, they still only have about 5-6k on them...



so after pressing them out and taking a sanding bit in the die grinder to get the paint out of the control arms....



i installed a set of delrin bushings...


they've even got grease zerks to make lubing them a breeze



then i broke out the welder to try my skillz with the mig some more (this is like my third welding project so bear with me if they are terrible)


i also never had the proper pieces to install the poly front subframe bushings back in the summer when i did the whole suspension/brake upgrades, so i took care of that at this time as well.



so, that's it for now. i should be getting another set of delrins for the rear this week and i plan to install them and weld the rear control arms up as well in preparation for going out to thunderhill raceway this upcoming weekend.

Cool. Were the zerk (sp?) fittings your idea, or are the bushings designed to be greased?

they originally were my idea, but billzcat (who made em for me) changed the design a bit in making it have a spiralled groove to ensure more even dispersal of the grease, it works quite nice i must say

Delrin is supposed to be "self lubricating", but well, it still tends to "dry out" and needs greased from time to time to keep them quite.

man...just seeing that rust free 4000 makes me think it's all just a dream....

The 4K control arms are designed to bend (instead of your car) in the event your wheel rolls over something it isn't supposed to.

I had a buddy who totalled his car shortly after he seam welded his control arms on his coupe GT, he hit a curb while sliding on ice sideways at about 15 mph and the strengthened control arm was pushed up against the rear of the subframe which seperated the two pieces of spot welded steel that made up the frame of his car. The local VW dealer had a rash of quantums which experienced the same thing around that time and the way the control arm was designed to bent and contort was amazing. Of course one wheel and control arm later and those quantums were back on the road.
