Sean, why do you think that with the H&Rs it would be a problem? Because of sitting lower? The coil itself won't interfer I wouldn't think. As long as I don't hit a tie-rod end it seems to me that with an extra 5mm of offset to bring me that much closer in would help in the rubbing of the fenders area. You bring up an interesting point however on the lower profile 225's. HAS ANYONE EVER RUN A 225 ON A URQ WITH A LOWER PROFILE THAN 50? As long as the profile doesn't get too carried away and not look period I would like a little less profile than the 225/50s, but figured the width might grow to rub the tierod, especially with an ET of 40.

Hank, this tire/wheel combo is not going on a 500HP stroker UrQ... Im sure you can justify all the spacers and fender banging for that extra 5/16" of tire, but on the car which is staying a 'daily' drivable car it's just not necessary.

All the fender rolling in the world isn't going to stop the tires from rubbing where the rear valance screws to the fender. Take a look at the rear valance of my former UrQ in your Dad's garage, you will see where they rubbed away the plastic...

LOL, Sean, I put over 20k miles on the 225-50-16's on those RFs. I ran them on stock springs and spent shocks for over 8k miles. Can you remember my car all rolled over doing donuts in San Diego? Do you think it did not have opportunity to bottom out back there? I then put coil overs, and lowered the car VERY low. Wit those 32et rfs, nothing rubbed anywhere without spacers or rolled fenders. The body work was completely stock at htat point.

Fast forward a few more years, only the one fender is rolled at all. That is the fender that hit a deer, and had cracking paint, so I experimented somewhat. I now run 245-40-17s on A8 45et wheels. They do require 12mm of spacer up front to get them down to around 32mm and not hit the tie rod.

There are just a select few that have rolled more miles on their URQ than I have in the last 3 years. It is a daily driver. Currently it is my primary driver.

You don't have to believe me lol Take a look at the valance where the tires rubbed where the screw goes thru to secure it to the fender... Im sure jogging your Dad's memory he found a nice shiny polished screw on each side where the tired rubbed while he was taking the valance off. Of course thats been years ago LOL Sorry - had to do it, getting tag teamed here...

Im not the only one that has mentioned that particular rub, Im just the only one persistent enough to solidify my point.

I just don't see why the bigger-is-better approach pertains to your Dad's (mom's) car... Those wheels are pigs anyway, they are the heaviest rim of their type and they keep you from running opposed piston calipers due to their lack of back-spacing. The only reason I love them is purely the look. Adding a heavier tire carcass on an already heavy rim doesn't help acceleration OR handling, it actually hinders it - you should agree with that.

Im not sure why everyone is fighting me on this one ;o] I did that homework when I shopped for the tires Im currently running. 16" wheels are all but a thing of the past when talking performance tires, it's not 'til you get up into 17's where you start seeing the selections of sizes again.

I'm sure you did do your homework, as you usually do, but it seems odd to me that those who chimed in about running 16x8 wheels also say they run 225/50 tires. Logic dictates that maybe the majority might be on to something and it might be you that is fighting the crowd. :wink: It seems to me that if you are going to run 8" wheels that you ought to use that wheel to it's full potential with as much tire as it will handle, taking into account the contraints of what will fit in the wells. Personally I've always thought that your tires looked stretched, but it's really hard to focus on your tires when the rest of the car is so, in your face, awesome. Tire selection in 16's almost makes me want to go to 17's or even 15's. Either that or put 215/50's on 7.5" wheels!!

I dunno, I couldn't be happier with my wheel / tire setup. The 225/50's always looked like balloons in the UrQ fender wells. Type 44 / UrS cars have a bigger wheel opening which aesthetically looks fine with a tire the size of the 225, the UrQ just don't look as good with a 16" wheel and what looks from the profile to be a much taller sidewall.

Even in the mirror-shot of Hanks car, straight on it looks great to have that wide of footprint, but from the side view of the car it was never as appealing since they look like a 60 or 70 series tire.

I still can't imagine that someone would say that there isn't enough tire under the UrQ.


However I would agree that they were aesthetically too small on the V8 - same exact wheels and tires on the UrQ now.


I've never been one to follow public opinion though ;o]

Not fair!!! I look at the car up against the Valley of Fire's red rocks and it's really hard to look at the tires! I then force myself to look at tires and is all I see is the RF's that should have gone with the red car. :wink: I have to say that is a pretty nice shot that makes the tire's tread look like they are as wide as the wheel and the tires nicely filling out the wheel wells. I may have to rethink this. Like they say, a picture tells the story, don't it? It's pretty hard to argue that the car looks nice.

The picture of my old V8 almost makes me miss it. It was a good looking car!!

The RF's are only 19.5 pounds, and the urS wheels are extremely lightweigh at 17 lbs. Those are very respectable weights for 8" wide wheels.

Bigger is not better, but vertical sidewalls is a must for me. I want a freeway cruising tire to take to events and out of state track events with a trailer/rack on top. I will probably end up with 225-50-16's on urs4 wheels for that. I'll keep snows on 245-40-17s and then probably find a good set of A8 wheels to put some 255-40-17s R compounds on.

Very unscientifically, I weighed an Urs wheel today by stepping on the bathroom scales without and with the wheel. It came out to exactly 19lbs. Hank, where did you come up with the 17lb number? Either way 17 or 19 doesn't sound real bad, except that between paint removal and bead blasting a few pounds of aluminum off the wheel they probably lost 10lbs. :wink:

Oh and Sean, when I took that car off of the trailer and got it into the garage (ok back yard) there wasn't a shiny spot on that car that wasn't either stainless or red paint that your car cover had polished to a gloss.......well except for the crease that I put into the passenger side rear quarter panel that was down to the SHINY metal while rolling it off of the trailer. :wink: I guess I forgot that the car had no brakes. :tard: :tard: :tard: :(

Well after going back and forth as to whether or not to just clear the Urs wheels after bead blasting them I decided that the center caps didn't match well enough and I would either have to find paint that came close to the raw aluminum or just buy silver paint and paint the wheels and center caps the same color. After coming home from the paint store with a two part (base/clear) silver I still couldn't stand to at least see what they would look like just cleared. I cleared them all with a paint I had bought from Eastwood figuring that I could just use it as a primer if I didn't like it. They looked really good and I could have saved myself $50, but I went ahead and used the paint that I had bought. They turned out nice. I wish I would have had all four caps so that I wouldn't have to mix up paint when the caps I bought arrive. Oh well.

The wheel on the left is the clear over bead blasted raw aluminum. The right is a painted wheel.


I wish I had the other caps. :(



I just need tires on them to have some incentive to get the calipers that have sat for 20yrs taken care of.

Thanks guys. Sean I'd like to just go right into painting, but there is just too much mechanical to get done before Oct. I really think that it ought to run not just stay home and look good. Now that I got something done today I don't feel bad that we didn't weld coilovers today. I figured with no sleep that the coilovers would force me to stay up and do something.


Oh and 225/45/16's are on their way. 8) Speaking of tires I anchored the HF tire changer to the same anchors that the strap bender bolts to. It work fairly decent once I modified the bead breaker on it so that it would work. It's not something that you always want to do, but to take old tires off of rims that needed to be painted worked out well or to take snows off of Las Vegas coupe wheels might work also. :-) I really bought it to change motorcycle tires.

Now that isn't a fair trade. I have a bunch of work into making them look good and I'm still a bit woriied about one of the wheels as it was full of leak stop of some kind like maybe it wouldn't seal. I say that instead of just a leak in the tire because it's obvious that the wheel has already been refurbished once. It looks like they ground down some of the lip to maybe get rid of some curb rash. I may have to find another and use this one as a spare. (Spares are always flat when you need them anyway ) So after all this work and money they probably aren't in as good of shape as the fat fives.

I share the story because it is hilarious, not because I am bitter... Well, very bitter

I called the guy Dave and said I wanted them, and could send him cash or whatever. He said that a guy was coming to see them at 11:30 but that he didnt know if they would fit his car or whatever. So I told the guy I wanted them if the guy didnt show up or they didnt fit. He consented and told me they were mine if they did not. Turns out he is an alum going to dental school at UNLV. We talked on the phone for over 20 minutes about various subjects from my Dentist Uncle in Kamas Utah, to real estate, to Las Vegas, to my Audi.... My dad all the meanwhile is at home, sleeping like a baby. He goes to work at 6 and at 7ish, calls the guy upon seeing your PM. My Dad talks to him, and apparently the guy never showed up, so he give the wheels to my Dad. I talk to my Dad around 8 and he tells me this. Naturally, I feel like I just had a set of wheels sold out from under me. I can't blame my Dad, but do tell him the details of the conversation, should he want to mess with the guy.

So I call up the guy, and ask him if the guy showed up to get the wheels. He sheepishly says ,"yeah, sorry man." Knowing he had not, I called upon an important detail I knew he would have to think about.. I said," Hey, what car did the guy drive over..." He fumbled on the phone, and said, "oh, I dont know, he didnt bring a car." I replied,"So how did he know they fit?" He said flustered," I dont know man, I guess he figured it out."

LOL So my dad shows up the next morning as he had arranged, and gave him the money for them. My Dad started dropping parts of our conversation. He starts off asking about his education and says he has a son at BYU. Then he ask what he is doing at UNLV, and he says dental. My Dad tells him of his brother in Kamas Utah that practiced in Vegas for a while. They talk about my URQ with those exact wheels per our conversation, and the guy looks down embarrassed. "what is your sons name by chance?"

My Dad gave him an extra 10$ for being played into lying. He confessed atleast! "UH, I sortof lied to your son about these wheels..." haha

Shame I dont have them. I would love to put these 245-40-17 R compounds on them for the track on wendsdays. I dont want to dismount my snows for just one event though. Wintercross starts up in a month!!
