I figured they were plugs, but what are they exactly? Where did you get them? :-D

i got them from the drawer! haha, believe it or not, we have a section in one of the toolboxes here filled with all sorts of various plugs from parts we install on cars. no sense in throwing them away :) so... as to what they came from, i don't know.

it's gonna be a tight squeeze, but it looks like the 951 IC i have will fit the bill perfectly and should be a very nice upgrade from a stock 200 20v IC.

also finished up the IM

gotta love the wrinkle 8)

i  the wrinkle

and judging by the way the alpine 4k turned out all nice and perty, this zermatt should make everyone's pants fit a little tighter

Not to steal or backtrack, but I had a question about the 5 lug swap too. I'd been planning to do that someday as well since my mc1 donor car has most of the required pieces. What is this about people mentioning A2 parts and stuff?

I was going to follow: http://www.motorgeek.com/phpBB2/viewtop ... sc&start=0
and the only non 5ktq parts I see are the 2 UrQ ball joints (granted they are pricey) and the Gti Tie rod ends (which aren't that bad)

I don't see why this is that pricey or confusing, especially if you have a 5ktq in your yard. The biggest expense is the UrQ pieces and needing to get rear axles for the front.

But I have been out of the loop for over a year, has there been a more accepted/easier change since then?

And also, just to add more confusion, my '84 4kq must have the larger CVs in back (which are staying there anyway) but what half shafts do I need in order to get the larger CVs in front and is there any purpose in doing this? Or should I just find post '85.5 rear axles and be done with it?

the method of doing a 5lug swap as you mentioned is a proven one. i just stumbled across the fact that the 4kq rear wheel bearings fit into the B3 strut housings, allowing the 5kt hubs to ride in there. i guess i'll be seeing how long it lasts with the shims in there.

and as for the axles, in order to use the large inner CV rear axles from an 84'-early 85', all you need are the drive flanges from a turbo car... i.e. 5ktq transmission, which are very common ;)

another little update, i finished painting the ugly old fuel rail with some real close matching paint to the zermatt color along with cleaned up the braided fuel lines and polished the stainless harness a bit for some prettyness :) i'm just awaiting some injector o-rings to get here from the parts supplier so i can put the injectors back in and be largely done with this part of the engine clean up job.

last night i dissassembled the throttle body, cleaned it inside and out, masked and then painted it black so it wouldn't stand out wierd on a black IM. i polished the little aluminum bracket on top too :)

i also got my oilpan cleaned and painted last night.

all my painted bits so far curing up by the heater :)

i'm hoping to have the engine in the stand tonight before i head back home to OR for a couple weeks. when i get back i should have my ARP headstuds and then i can pull the head, clean the block, remove the two broken studs from the water manifold, and reassemble the engine with all the new bits including an all metal head gasket so i should be good for many more miles, and be able to really enjoy the MRC chipped ecu i have waiting to go in 8)

krylon wrinkle paint 8)

Do you clear coat the wrinkle paint at all? Do you use any primer? Very nice!

Now, myself, I would've polished that IM, but you're not me, so hey. That's gonna look menacing all put together!
derracuda

Post by derracuda »

nope! no clear. the wrinkle is kind of a delicate paint, if you put other paints and stuff over it, it turns out weird. and for the red, i didn't use a primer of any sort, just some light tack coats to make sure there weren't any fish eyes. if you go to the general forum section, there's a sticky on wrinkle painting right here....

http://www.motorgeek.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4529

as for polishing the IM, i've seen it before, and while it's cool, it's a HUGE pain to do the whole thing nicely, and it takes upkeep. the paint is low maintainence and understated (cept for the red :P i know that).

and yes... i'm really looking forward to getting this car together :). it'll be like new with all the mounts and parts i have for this thing. i actually bought my first set of NEW engine mounts..lol. i was always too cheap to get them for my white car. so new engine mounts, along with tranny, diff (all three) new upper strut mounts (with mount savers), hopefully some CQ springs, koni yellows, the white car's old subframes with the delrin control arm bushings and poly subframe bushings and a rear sway bar.... and a whole box of other knick knacks to refresh this thing... *shivers* i'm really ..... really ready to go on this one and it should be even better than the white car for daily duties 8)

D, that's going to look sweet. I was actually considering doing that same scheme on my car.

I was first, no you di-in't!

I wanna try pulling off the silver and red again with that wrinkle print. Derek's valve cover looks a lot like the OEM Audi VCs and stuff...that's quality.

Well Sam, since it doesn't make the car go faster, I probably won't get it done for a very long time

So in the very short time, what is ahead of it to make the car go faster:P?
