Her Mars Red 83 Urq ...23psi of manual boost...vid
Re: Her Mars Red 83 Urq gets suspension/brake work love.
I have to say it WAS fun playing with him. I led him on for about 20 minutes before I dropped enough hints that he put it together. He didn't know whether to be upset, confused, or just plain embarrassed when he realized that I knew. LOL
Re: Her Mars Red 83 Urq has newly refurbished Urs wheels!!
Time for a small update. I had a few days off this last weekend and begged off of a trip to Salt Lake to attend my 5yr old twin grandkid's birthday party to spend some quality wrench time on Her Urq. You would think that trying to make time for her car would score points.......NOT!! The quality wrench time turned out to be one of those one step forward two steps back kind of things, but my hands and back feel like I wrenched for a few days.
I decided that I needed to tackle the partially seized up brakes, both front and rear. They, like the rest of the car have been sitting for the last twenty years and before that spent the first 10 years in the Wisconsin roads. The calipers look like it along with control arms, sway bars, steering arms etc. I don't have enough time before the Oct. GTG to pull subframes, but wanted things cleaned up a bit and at least stop the rusting if possible.

When Hank and Dave offered up Urs4 G60 front calipers and the slotted rears which are both bolt on upgrades I was more than happy to just ditch the original brakes. They were in pretty decent shape, but still had a few obvious miles on them and needed to be cleaned up.
I first taped them up and hit them with the bead blaster figuring that I wanted to rebuild them anyway and any stray beads could get taken care of then.

I couldn't find a rebuild kit for the rears, but remembered that I had a brand new set in a box that had been intended for my Urq so I start searching, but in finding them I also find a couple of cans of Mars red touch up paint. I figured that it wouldn't take to long for raw cast iron to rust back up so.......yea you guessed it.

Painted and rebuilt with new pads.

I also had a set of newish H&R lowering springs that were set up with brand new upgrade Spax dampers that were also on my Urq, but had got shelved in favor of coilovers. They just really seemed like the perfect upgrade for old wore out suspension on a stock Urq and I figured that with two Urqs I can't afford to pick and choose as much and needed to use these along with Sean's original blue strut mounts that can't have many miles on them. He is going coilover with solid up front.
One corner cleaned up, painted, and coils installed along with rebuilt G60s and some brand new rotors. (Thanks Hank)

And on the car

And with the newly finished Urs4 wheels and new 225/45/16 tires.

I did a little bit different approach on the rears since they were new in box calipers, but needed the S4 carriers. I wanted to protect the carriers, but didn't want to paint the new calipers. The new rotors that were with the new calipers ended up not fitting, so I had to clean up the used S4 rotors. Not bad for old rusty rotors.

Ok this brings me to a question for those of you that have done the rear V8/S4 caliper slotted rotor upgrade. I have always been told that the emergency brake setup from the Urq won't work and that I would have to source a 4kq setup. First off does anyone have a parts 4kq that they would be willing to sell the emergency brake setup from? Next question - I think I remember a thread not to long ago where this was discussed and I think it was Peter that said his original small chassis emergency brake cables worked. I remembering thinking how did that happen. Well I happened to put the driver's side caliper on the passenger side strut which puts the emergency brake lever on the bottom and the brake line on the top of the caliper. With that configuration I think that it would be possibe to run the original cable. So does anybody see a problem with running like that? I think that the Emg lever/spring setup is going to get a bunch of crap tossed up on it no matter if it's on the top or bottom. I will try to get some better pictures of what I'm talking about.

Re: Her Mars Red 83 Urq gets suspension/brake love.
Looks fantastic. Did you turn the rear rotors or did you use the ones from Sean?
http://genuineaudiparts.com/ has new cables for the 4kq rear. They are 30 bucks a side(yikes) but a good last resort. Used cables are horrible anyway. Then the only thing you need is a yoke. The URQ is a one piece cable that is shared by the yoke, where the 4kq is like the urS. It has two places to hold each individual cable. You need that yoke, or need to make something to make it work. I feel bad because the urS one look like the 4kq one and I pulled it with intentions of giving it to you, but it must have been thrown out in the 2 day partout session. I never examined it closely, but maybe somebody can give you a picture of an URS and 4kq one to see if they look the same. IT may be easier to find somebody parting an urS car.

Re: Her Mars Red 83 Urq gets suspension/brake love.
Above I made mention of the one step forward and two steps back. The steps back came when I decided that no matter how much prettying up I did the huge exhaust leak from the manifold area was never going to work for me. I decided that after wire brushing rust for a day or two that I would change directions and pull the CIS back out, pull the intake manifold, and see if I could determine the leak. I figured it would be a cracked exhaust manifold and although finding one that is not cracked is getting pretty hard to do, I was in luck because I already have one. Primed with that knowledge I dove in. I had just been there a few weeks ago trying to get it to run and idle well. :frustrated:
What I found was what looks to be a perfectly good manifold, but one that is missing two studs. :(

I then thought that I would try to make as much room as possible to MAYBE drill and easy out them with the head in place. Yea I know, wishful thinking, but the thought of pulling the head just didn't sound good right now. You know that time and money thing. Well while making room by pulling the rest of the studs out I broke the other #5 stud which looked to be the hardest to get to and at that point I rolled up the tools and went back to suspension and brakes. I then went in and ordered studs, intake, eshaust, and head gaskets. It looks like I will be pulling a head when I get off work tomorrow morning . I hope to get it off before I go to sleep. Trying to get the studs out on the bench will be a good enough trick I think and if not I will have to replace it with an old hydraulic head tht I have. I really didn't want to have to make the decisions of whether or not to rebuild heads or not.....I just wanted to fix a simple tic tick tick exhaust leak. Oh Well!! I guess I'll have to decide whether or not to upgrade to a water cooled K26 while I'm at it....I have one or two sitting around from 5ktq days.

Re: Her Mars Red 83 Urq gets suspension/brake love.
The rotors from Sean that came with His Urq won't work for either. I don't know what they are for, but they aren't deep enough to reach the calipers, so I just cleaned up the S4 rotors I got from you. Yea I know they were pretty rusty....I can still taste it.

From Zach - "that car has a lot of parts." (most cars do) "who's car is that?" (John's, he lives in Vegas) "Does John have a truck?" (yes, actually he does)
Thought you may appreciate that!
Brakes look good, I hate broken exhaust studs...

Re: Her Mars Red 83 Urq gets suspension/brake love.
LOL I guess every guy ought to have a truck. I'm not a real truck kind of guy, but I sure hate to be without one. There are times that the truck doesn't even get started for month or two. I keep thinking the the set of batteries that are 5yrs old are going to fail me one of these times, but it just keeps starting right up. I probably shouldn't even be mentioning batteries within earshot of the truck even if I'm just writing it.
Just to be fair you might want to tell Zach that all those parts don't belong to that car, in fact John doesn't know where some of the parts hanging out in the garage actually belong.

Looks good. Upgrade to the k24. I'll send one in the mail first today if you thought you would use it. It is an awesome upgrade for that car.

trucks are good. its good to have trucks.
trucks can haul things (parts) and tow things (parts cars) and stuff.
keep it up John....

That wouldn't be much of an upgrade, other than a newer one with water cooling, since the k24 came stock on them. The turbo that came off of it has no play what so ever.

My way of thinking is that anybody that owns old audis needs a truck to go drag them home when they break.
Ok.....the head is off and on the bench!
It's amazing how easy a head comes off when you already have the exhaust, intake, CIS, and major stuff already removed. I only had to remove the timing belt, cam gear, distributor, and disconnect temp sensor wiring. The engine condition still amazes me at how clean it is. There is hardly any varnish in the head itself and the bores look great with just a very slight bit of ring ridge, and that is mostly carbon.

I cleaned most of it off in the #1 cylinder with a rag and some carb cleaner. What was left is mostly just a stain. It really is too bad the head has 3 broken studs. :(
I will first see if I can remove the studs and then decide what direction to go then. If I can successfully remove them I will probably just clean up the head, hand lap the valves in, and reseal the valve guides. I probably should have the seats and valves resurfaced, but then with the solid lifter cam it all has to be reshimmed and that sounds like a pain and time. I'm probably jumping ahead of myself, but does anyone know how available the shims are?
Re: Her Mars Red 83 Urq gets suspension/brake love.
The 20vt did not get the k24 until the MC2.... Your URQ had the bigger, and slower k26, as did the 5ktq. The urS cars got k24s.
That motor looks great

Re: Her Mars Red 83 Urq gets suspension/brake love.
No I believe that is when they went back to the K24, but water cooled at that time.
Is three broken exhaust studs reason enough for a 20t swap?
It would be tempting if Oct. wasn't so close. I would really like to keep the solid lifter head if possible, but I don't know if I will go so far as to weld, drill, and tap if the holes get to bunged up. At that point the head that came off the seized motor out of His Urq would bolt right up with matching water passage and all. I might want to tear it down to see how bad the seats might be pitted after sitting in that engine full of water for who knows how long. It looks fine and has very few miles, but it is a hydraulic head from something early with the round water passage.

Re: Her Mars Red 83 Urq gets suspension/brake love.
ok break it up you two. The WX has a non water cooled K26 and a separate oiling circuit for cooling it - 2 oil filters. The higher compression of the MC2 got the water cooled K24. The mid-term cars MC1 (5000CStQ) got the water cooled version of the K26.
Other than that - Great Progress John!!! I always know when you are quiet on the MG you are up to something.
Im sittin in the airport again headed home. Will be ripping the spring perches off those old struts and maybe getting the rings welded up before the weekend ends!
I can't wait to see a pic of the car down on the ground with the new suspension and wheels on it. Should have a nice stance.

Re: Her Mars Red 83 Urq gets suspension/brake love.
You are going to have to wait for a little while at least until I get the engine sorted out, because I have no intention of putting that passenger side strut back in and block access to the exhaust/turbo hardware. It won't be quite as helpful as pulling it all out because the exhaust will already be bolted to the head before the head goes back on, but the strut will still be on the bench.
I work nights all weekend. I will be off Tuesday thru Thursday and go back on days next weekend. Lets either plan on welding in the middle of next week after you get off work, or mark where you want the rings and drop them off at the house and I will weld them up Monday morning.

i dislike weird shifts like that, John. i can never seem to adapt. days one week, nights the next, back to days, man thats a rough one.
but i like welding rings for custom coilovers

Re: Her Mars Red 83 Urq gets suspension/brake love.
Wow Aaron, we're just the same only different.
I too don't much care for shift work, but it pays the bills and I have a 7day off long change once a month that is nice. It's just hard knowing what day it is or trying to get anything done working 12hr shifts. I always have great plans for in the morning, like pulling a head, but when that 12hrs is over and I'm going home the plans don't seem near as important as sleep. Another aspect of my schedule is that I will go 5 days this week without seeing the wife!! I guess, depending on how you look at it, that could be good or bad, but in my case it's bad most of the time. We waved at each other this morning as she is going to work and I'm coming home as she also works 12hr shifts as an ICU nurse. I love having 3 days off in the middle of the week when everything is open, but also everyone is at work including the wife. I can pretty much catch up and find time in the garage without even getting the "EYE".
So I guess you do what needs to be done and make the best of it.......oh and I love to weld rings on coilovers also. LOL

John, if you DO go with the slightly smaller H2O cooled K24, you will need to put a new freeze plug in the side of the block and possibly change your water manifold on the head and get the MC1/MC2 coolant lines. It is probably a worthy upgrade, as if you leave her car along, except maybe a chip and WG spring upgrade, you will not notice any decrease in the upper RPM, but should notice less lag down low. She may appreciate that for a daily driver...Just sayin'.

"she" aint never gonna drive this.... B7 S-car or UrQ?
Re: Her Mars Red 83 Urq gets suspension/brake love.
You never know, she might decide she likes red and being involved with the shifting. Her college car was a VW 4 speed manual bug after all. The thing is Aaron, is if I push the car to the level of tune and reliability that it will have to be to even have a chance of her driving it, I will end up having a pretty nice DD to drive. There IS some method to my madness.
Eric, I have thought about that same thing whether a k26 or k24 water cooled turbo, but I still have an old 200 MC1 in the back yard that has all the lines etc, so I would just have to come up with the freeze plug to return the hot water to the jacket. I believe the line that runs behind the timing belt back plate is even still intact. You never know until you look around here as parts cars seem to loose their parts......go figure!!
Hey Hank, I'll take you up on that k24 offer if you don't mind. Is it still a decent turbo? Is it the family turbo that originated from Sean, the one you had on the S6 for awhile?

That is correct. :-) By the way the scat rods are no longer available as the Boise operation has need of them. LOL Something about if I were to be the Segway guy in a Ken Block type run I wouldn't even have to worry his coupe quattro is so slow!!
Re: Her Mars Red 83 Urq gets suspension/brake love.
Just the K24 from the s6 I parted. Sean's k24 resides in the s6 atm. It will probably make it's way back home here soon as the turbo is upgraded.
I can pull it off and ship it on monday or tuesday.

Speaking of owning, the title is still in the door of your welder or so Hank says. I guess I ought to check!! For all I know you may still own it.
Besides with the family.......see three posts up!!I'll tell you though David, I already have a ton of time and energy into that car and Oct. is coming up fast. I would have liked to run it up to Salt Lake and paint it at the Lab, but I'll be doing good to have it running and registered by Oct.
