There, thats better:

So it looks like I'll wind up re-doing the shift linkage. After putting all the interior pieces back together I've discovered that the shifter is centered too far forward, enough so that when shifting into reverse, 1st, 3rd, and 5th it pulls on the rubber boot uncomfortably.

Furthermore, now that I've had a chance to drive the car it seems I don't have a 3rd and 4th gear synchro :x

Looks good Marc, you have a 6spd in there right, will you need another due to this syncro issue?

yeah, basically a B5 S4 box. I'll probably see what it will take to rebuild the box myself, otherwise I might see what I can get for the box as a core and just buy a rebuilt box.

Although, while I'm in there, I might be really tempted to install a diesel 6th gear for mega-overdrive use on the highway (1500 rpm @ 70? yes please.)

tranny rebuild kit ordered, now doing some research on the DQT .56 6th speed. Rough pricing that I'm getting right now for the gearset seems to be in the $700 range which is more than I want to spend but I'm going to research other vendors to see if I can find a lower priced source. From what I gather there are two gears involved and I'm getting conflicting part numbers. vagcat shows one of them as 01E311362L which is different than the listing on Charlie Smith's page.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

I'm sure the gear changed isn't for anything like fuel savings, so will it make the car that much more drivable? Don't get me wrong, I'm 100% behind this project but I'm not sure about the return on this effort etc.

Actually a .56 sixth gear would be ultra long and would improve highway fuel economy.

:stupid:

the v8 makes a metric shit ton of torque at low rpm, no need to be buzzing down the highway at 3500 rpm at 70. The .56 6th puts me around 2200rpm @70.

The idea is that on the track I'll probably never need anything past 5th anyway, 6th is for highway cruising.

Since you trailered the car down to MD this summer I thought it would see very little highway miles. If you've got other plans to drive it more that cool! I understood the higher ratio could theoretically save gas, the reality of this might not work out. You would also have to put a bunch of miles on in 6th gear driving mildly to make up the $700+ initial investment and then you could begin to actually save money with this mod.

I'm totally biased since my Chevelle has 88's in the rear with a 4 speed (no overdrive). I loved buzzing around, but I never had to worry about any turbo surging.

I'm looking forward to seeing this car at Carlisle!

well, i think for one, that the 6th gear is nice just not to have the engine making so much noise when you're just trying to get somewhere... and the added benenfit of better mileage is pretty nice when gas costs nearly $4/gallon.... sooooooo, it's money saved in a hurry if you drive the car much. right now i'm blowin' through $150 in fuel on my A6 everytime i go home for a week and a half, it sucks.. so saving on gas $$ means more for other fun goodies in my book :)

So after talking with Scott @ Advancedautomotion I was able to get a better deal on a rebuilt DQT box (European A6 TDI box) so I opted to go that route instead of rebuilding my EDU tranny and throwing in the DQT 6th gear.

From my research, the DQT is different in ratios than the EDU only from 4th gear up:

EDU
1st 3.5:1
2nd 1.89:1
3rd 1.23:1
4th .96:1
5th .80:1
6th .68:1

DQT
1st 3.5:1
2nd 1.89:1
3rd 1.23:1
4th .87:1
5th .67:1
6th .56:1

so Jason @ JH Motorsports was nice enough to let me cancel the order for the rebuild kit and DQT 6th gear set which clears the way for me to go this route.

Looking forward to it :)
