Cool, makes more sense Mark, although you should probably rebuild the box anyway as a spare or a sale item.... or just flog it in need of a rebuild.

I am being selfish as I want to help you rebuild it when i get back to see what they are like inside ;)

so I've got a thought to make some more room for the passenger side intercooler (it sits too low right now, and there isn't a lot a room for it to go up much further because the alternator is in the way).

I'm thinking about possibly relocating the alternator to the other side of the engine (where the power steering pump used to be). This would actually have a number of advantages:

1) more room for the intercooler

2) REALLY short belt, short enough where I think I can get away without a dynamic tensioner, just some kind of bolt adjustment to tension the belt vs the alternator.

Thankfully the 4.2 block is sitting right here for me to head scratch over without a whole lotta effort.

Yup, s'agoodplan.

Pretty straight forward when you do the 4.2 swap too. You could watercool the alternator too ;)

How about a gear drive with a shaft from the flywheel instead of a belt. No seriousely it wouldnt be too hard. Cut a hole in the bellhousing. weld on a couple of mounting plates, bolt on a pillar block bearing, take the gear off a starter motor and weld it onto a shaft and mount the other end of the shaft to the front or back of the alternator (Dependant on which way it has to turn) with a regular 1/2" drive socket style attachment so it just drops in.

you really are all about that can of worms, aren't you? :)

interesting idea, although I'm not sure it buys me much since the pulley is already there for serpentine drive and I've got plenty of room in the location where the power steering pump used to be.

heheheh.....The plasma ain't so good on Aluminum bellhousings tho, better off with a sawzall.

You know where it is......Ill have to start charging you for tips ;)

For the intercooler you could still go Water to Air and put it up in the fender?

A plan is brewing related to intercooling. As a hint, it brings me back to an earlier plan that I abandoned, bringing it back to life because I figured out a way to make it work :)

Mark,

What is the final drive on the DQT gearbox? My ETOS parts catalogue isn't working. Is it 3.89:1 like ur quattro? or is it something funny?

Hoping it's a 4.11:1.

So thanks to Janis for bringing me up a pair of used stock lifters to hack apart for the last bit of tooling I need to flow bench the 4.2 heads. Basically this piece allows me to create a fixed amount of lift for both the intake and exhaust valves:

I also picked up some 3/4" cross buffs from standard abrasives to help clean the remaining gunk from the exhaust ports (Not really fair to compare flow bench numbers before and after when there is gunk on the walls...). These things work *awesome*.

With any luck I'll head over to the machine shop tomorrow to play around with the flow bench and get some baseline numbers.

yeah... they work i had red ones...but go easy they will crumble if you force them too much..they're just scotch brite basically
