that does sound right to me. My chipped ALH is fun. Not fast AT ALL, but fun. I'm sure a chipped 1.8t would walk away from a tuned ALH, but the diesel has a really fun power delivery. I have been daily beating my chipped mk4 jetta wagon for 100k and I still enjoy a spirited drive over the mountain with it.

Honestly, if any audi should have a diesel in it, its yours! It just fits the overall scheme perfectly.

My big turbo TDI in my audi is knocking on the door of quick and is VERY fun.

It shouldn't be too much more work than a 1.8t, the kicker is the transmission, but the sub-1000 TDI 01e isn't too bad.

Used TDI engines here in the PNW go for gold though. Very popular conversion for vanagons (which there are a lot of here). Last I looked it's probably $1-1.5k for an ALH...I thought about going that route with my CGT. You might get lucky and find a parts car for $2-3k, but those get picked up pretty quick. Plenty of sub-$1k 1.8T cars though and lots of engines at the u-pull junkyards for $100-200.

Thats too bad, they are pretty cheap and plentiful here. I just bought and ALH longblock with all accessories for $100. Timing belt broke, but just needs a couple valves and lifters. Very good shape otherwise.

What is $1000 is the overall cost of a project really?

That's 50% of my original target budget for this project!

(which has been long-since blown...)

Building it now ;)

You coming to the Audi Expo this year? I'm taking both coupes for some good juxtaposition.[/quote]

Can't make it this year, leaving on Friday for Coeur d'Alene GF is doing the half Ironman out there.

Finished up "phase 1" of the front bumper and got the winch wired up and working. Ready for the Audi Expo on Saturday! 8-)

The tube bumper/brush guard is made 100% from T304 stainless and attaches to the stock bumper mount with the two long bolts, so it is super quick & easy to remove. I'm really happy with the result on this one. My welding is starting to get close to where it used to be too. :)

WOOHOO!!

It rained a good bit today so I took the rig out to a hilly construction site near my house after dinner to see how it would do. It outperformed my expectations. This thing is freaking awesome! The only thing I would add is more torque down low. Otherwise, it's a beast. 8-) :D :drive:

ahem....TDI? I just got my TDIq back on the road after 2 weeks in the shop doing some paint work and having it re-aligned, and I will re-confirm a TDI quattro is awesome. I had almost forgotten.

I was thinking you might be able to get away with your 01a since your car is now a truck and the huge tires would help you get the final drive up a bit.

yeah yeah, I know :P

Just getting a wrecked TDI donor car out here is prohibitively expensive then there is the cost of transmission and clutch on top of it so Unless someone donates one to the cause I think it's going to be an AEB (if anything). I can pick up a b5 for a couple hundred bucks and get both the engine and the shorter 1st & 2nd gears out of it.

Alright, I concede. I see you still have a shred of practicality left, and I commend you! :D

...but just picture this car with a nice turbo whistle coming from a smoke stack that comes through the passenger side fender, runs up the A-pillar and exits just above the roof rack with a 90" turn out and a slash cut.

Tell me that is not glorious.

Today was a good day. Here are some shots from the 2016 Audi Expo at Griot's Garage this afternoon.

Ready to go. The difference between these two kills me :D

If you were there and got some pictures of either car, dont' be shy- post them up! :)

Here is a link to the red car's thread if you got some good shots of that one: http://www.theprojectpad.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=874

What are your skid plate plans?

I'm going to do a front skid plate out of 1/4" 6061 aluminum plate + 1/2" black UHMW armor over the fuel and brake lines which run under the car. I haven't decided if I will do anything for the rear diff and subframe yet

This front skid plate... it's going to bolt right up to a stock Cq, RIGHT??!!
