Wow,
You've been a busy man John. I'm sure your working up alot off browny points with
the wife. I must say there's nothing more satisfying that putting freshly painted parts
back on the car. The satisfaction sinks in right away. It looks like the wife's car is going to
be really nice when your done with it.
Keep the updates coming.
Cheers,
Craig

You guys are too much. How come nobody was in line when our buddy Darin, who I might add was out of work at the time, was parting all his I5 stuff. I guess nobody needed them then!! Besides Dave and Sean, you two are already hopeless Audiholics whereas we are still cultivating Scott. He really needs some boost to solidify our position in Boise.
Oh and one other thing.....my brother David wants them too.

Just a nephew that I'm trying to nurture in the Audi ways of life.
Re: Her Mars Red 83 Urq gets suspension/brake love.
I hope you are at work Dad, as this is a lot of geeking for an event being 3 weeks away.

Re: Her Mars Red 83 Urq gets suspension/brake love.
It's Sunday and that sounded like someone that just sent his wife out of town.
I am at work though. Yea it's coming up fast and I'm a long way from having a registered driver. The broken studs really set me back timewise.

yup, just like "they" did. its a classic case of FBI'ism. Friends, Brothers, and Inlaws.

bring him into the "family" so to speak, put him under your wing for a few missions, then pretty soon he is running things over there.

Re: Her Mars Red 83 Urq gets suspension/brake love.
Aaron, it's pretty hard to get much past you.......brother.
Did I tell you that I just had a son in law move up to your neck of the woods...Portland? The problem is that some guys have the gene and some don't. He more readily fits the liberal Portland bicycle crowd than the go fast Audi crowd, but at least I have him in place.

A picture of the rear struts with new wheels and tires. I still need to get the front driver's corner installed, but I'm waiting until I deal with the engine all torn apart. It hasn't been bounced or driven at all, but I was hoping that it would sit a bit lower. I'll have to get it running and a few miles on it before I get too carried away. I swapped the calipers back around to the side they are supposed to be at and I have some 4k brake cables coming.

Lookin great, John. Keep it up.
Re: Her Mars Red 83 Urq gets suspension/brake love.
I needed to take a break from the garage, so I decided to come and post some progress. I'm not sure just how much progress it is, but if it gets documented and there are pictures it makes me feel better anyway.
I decided that I needed to see if the solid lifter WX head was going to be salvageable.....be able to pull the 3 broken exhaust studs out of the aluminum head. First off I figured that I needed to be able to lay it flat on the mill or drill press in order to drill the old studs and in order to do this I needed to remove the cooling water neck from the head.
This is what I ended up with. Two more broken studs for a total of 5. :(

A half day later I have all 5 studs out, retapped and ready to either reinstall or clean up. What do you think I decided? You got it the escalating project mentality. I figured that as long as it was out on the bench that I'd like to see how worn the valve seats were and install new valve seals that I happened to have in a drawer from previous 20vt days.

Valves ready to be blasted.

I couldn't have a clean head and bolt an old dirty intake to it could I?

The combustion chambers freshly high pressure washed tand drying in the sun.

While the head was drying, I had forced high pressure water through all of the oil and water ports, I decided that the block needed to get cleaned up for the install. It really is amazing at how clean the bores are and how little wear. There is virtually no ridge ring!! The 90k miles that are on the car must have had the oil changed every 3k!!!
What I started with.

Tools of choice to clean up, along with rags and a vacuum. The purple disk is a plastic of sorts that my son in law bought me for Christmas last year. He used them in the army working on Apache helicopters and loved them for removing gasket material and general cleanup. I agree with him. They do a good job without the abrasive grit that goes along with most other systems.

and the finished cleanup.

I found a few "escalating" items that I want to deal with while there. I have brand new OEM motor mounts that were bought, but replaced with 034's density line. I think I want to replace at least this side.

Well I guess bread is over. I need to do more cleanup, lap in valves, install seals and in general get something done. That's all for now.

Re: Her Mars Red 83 Urq gets suspension/brake love.
Does it ever end?? Ha Ha Ha, now that's funny. OF COURSE NOT!!!!! I think that Hank has bitten off the bigger piece, but then again he is young. I should know better. I think about like Hank, well maybe it's he thinks like me, and wanted to paint my car before the GTG, but too many other things have come up to derail the plan. I now have to think about just the fender and front core support. In fact instead of going out to the garage after the last break to put the head together, I instead busted out the paint remover and started applying. NOT ALL OVER LIKE HANK DID, but enough to still have tape, prime, and squirt some red paint.
Stripper on the core support.

Breaks over. Back to work!!!!!

Ha Ha. I win because I don't have an Uncle to help along the way. Is all I have is Renee and she can't even tell which car I'm working on. She says that they both look the same. I guess you have to really have a really good eye to notice that one is on all fours, well three tires, and the other is on a rotisery with absolutely no running gear, fenders, glass, hood, engine, or door.
David are you going to bring your S6 down for the GTG?

I think I am going to run co-driver to hank... or maybe just put the interior together while he drives
To be sure my envolvment is mostly in the role of counsiliary, but oddly I have been blowing white, port-rose, and bondo colored buggers for a week or so
