saturday the intake plumbing was tackled. i needed a pipe that's secured to the body so that it doesn't rattle around, and when the air filter or turbo inlet elbow is pulled, the pipe doesn't flop around and be a pain to work with, so I came up with this...

Image
Image
Image

finished it in matte black
Image

suction line for the crank case breather system
Image

nice tight fit...
Image

still enough clearance to get access at the back of the light 8)
Image

the downpipe also got wrapped
Image

i bought some of HRP's "original" gold heat shielding... man, that stuff is cool! i pulled the no longer original emissions and vacuum routing stickers out from under the hood and prepped the area...
Image

made some templates with cardstock
Image

cut out and install
Image

and i also wanted to do the AAN heat shield that i was planning on using. the finish on it was getting kind of tattered, so i prepped it and did the best i could. the foil is fiberglass reinforced, so it doesn't want to "stretch" much :P
Image

once that was done i realized the underside of the hood hadn't been cleaned in quite a while and gave it a thorough once over, then waxed it. alllll good :D
Image
the little teeny piece of heat foil was for a laugh :P

i think that's about it for this sunday. i'm beat from driving and pulling an engine and coming back. hopefully more this week :)

i need to get the flexible portion of fuel supply and feed lines figured out, work on wiring.... , and make a mount for the VR sensor on the crank pulley

i think the engine bay looks better without the red valve cover. I personally like the 3b better than the 7a unit 2 but that's just my opinion. Looking really good.

:? Air filter will collect all the dirt from road etc. Am I wrong? How often you will need to clean it? - once a week or every day? :D

Jim, I was going to use some stuff from Parts Express.

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdet ... er=268-280

Sure it's a little thicker, and doesn't make your engine bay look like NASA built it, but it's cheaper...

Speaking of spoilers, I saw your post on VWVortex.
Are you making copies of the Votex front spoiler?

Cheers

i hope to :) i need to get my feet wet in composites with a couple smaller things first, but yes, i do want to make copies of the votex piece. i can't find a reliable source to have them made, probably because i don't want 10,000 pieces, so... i shall be forced to learn 8) i am placing an order for materials today

when i made the crankcase breather can, i intended it to have steel wool of some kind as an additional filter for the hot oily air to pass through on it's way out to the intake, and i got that in last night.

Image

a screen to make sure nothing gets though (on both outlets for the can)
Image

stuffed like a turkey
Image

internal filter back on
Image

i thought maybe the steel wool would create some kind of resistance in line with that filter.... heh. it's basically free flowing. pretty cool 8) i plan to put a small clear catch container over by the turbo were the main suction line will be so i can see what kind of oily air is getting through, or not getting through, just for a little while, and then if all looks good, i pull it and make a straight line.

i'm about to head off to get the fittings for the turbo drain and fuel lines so that can get wrapped up, and i'm almost ready to pull the engine and gut it for the new block.

waahoo!

Did you consider using stainless steel or copper wool? No chance of it rusting from the water vapor. Granted, it will be generally cover with oil, which will protect it, but I like to be safe.
