he211 wastegated with generic 8v vw t25 manifold,

I got thinking, I am going to want to do bigger turbo eventually anyway, why build a downpipe twice, buy injectors twice, and pay for a tune twice? Just go big from the start.

i hope you're right! hopefully I can get enough out of the 10mm injection pump to make it worth it, and hopefully the stock TDI internals can play ball. If not......this addition will cost quite a lot more than anticipated. Oh well, in the end, i'll get it dialed in one way or the other.
I love experimenting, and this hasnt been done much on these engines.

Just find an auto somewhere from someone who doesn't know and swipe the pump... You definitely don't have to spend $1k like everyone wants in classifieds

Did you get this new turbo from Emil?

ill keep my eye out for one. I did that once before and got one for $100 for my ALH wagon, problem was it had sat on a shelf for a couple years and WOULD NOT run the car at all. Sold it as a core for $200, so cant complain I guess.

I think the 10mm will be fine, put some race 520's in it...I wasn't impressed with the spool on that turbo, from seeing video of it...gt2052 is a great wastegate turbo that has near stock spool and supports about 200whp. I'm a big fan of vnt turbos, I can't see not using one on a tdi, unless compound...

the turbo on Emil's car is a he221, the one i ordered is an he211, which is almost identical to a 2052.

Obviously VNT is better, but for less than just a vnt turbo i can get a manifold, turbo and nozzles. That sold it for me, plus holset..... :)

So steve, you think race 520 over something like pp764?

I loved the 764 I had in my alh bug with stock vnt15. Adjust iq for smoke/no smoke as you want. I'm cheap, they were on sale, and they were "too big" for the vnt15 so it worked for me.

seems like 764 would probably be fine, but maybe be about maxed out with this turbo? They are $100 cheaper than the race 520's I think, but then again, it would be nice to know i have enough injector. Bah, i dont know much about TDI tuning, obviously.

I think 764's would be ok, but with the ahu 10mm, r520s would be better.

started playing with turbo fitment. This is obviously going to set me back a bit because there will be a fair amount of fuckery involved in getting this to fit with my 90 20v airbox and piping. I am super excited though. Cool little turbo.

Obligatory turbo comparison shots, should be a beer bottle in there, but then you would realize how small they both are.

this is why i cant have nice things

test fit #1, looks workable. Going to have to clock the wastegate somehow since the outlet hits the manifold in factory configuration. Also the airbox will need trimming and obviously inlet and outlet piping re-worked. Just more excuse to play with tools, not problems.

this reminds me of many years ago and another 90 I spent a lot of time with.

pipes need some rework

somehow I broke a stud off in the head, must have overtorqued when I put the manifold on. Right angle drill, torch and easy outs to the rescue.

mild brake upgrade. G60 brakes from a coupe quattro. Slightly bigger and dual piston calipers. Found the correct NOS brembo rotors with the right offset for the 90.

Those are the same rotors I have. If you have the small bearing knuckles, you will still have to space the caliper back to center it on the rotor.

20v 90 has the big bearing knuckles, which is nice. Brakes bolt on, b4 90 axles fit perfectly and offer a bolt on solution for the TDI 01e tripod inner joints and cv outer joints. No custom brake or axle fuckery required.

Very nice! It's a PITA every time I need to take off my calipers due to making sure the damn spacers stay in place.
