Don't remind me. I don't think that I have a half day at least to sit in the DMV and get this car registered, assuming that I actually get it running down the road. I'm thinking insurance and a temporary. I wish I had time to paint as the car looks better in pictures than up close, but like Hank said, I'm glad that I didn't pass on the car. I guess I'll just have to have it painted before the Montreal GTG next year......nudge nudge!!
For those of you that have kept up on the Battle Born GTG thread, you know that I was a DNF at that event. I had to be towed into the hotel parking lot and ended up driving the TT all day Saturday and Sunday. Not that the TT isn't a nice ride and my wife was more than willing to run with A/C and a nice quiet ride, but it was rather embarrassing. Today I have an update on Her Urq that is a good, a bad, and a good again.
The good was that a few weeks ago you may remember that I was wondering what I was going to do about an exhaust. I ended up with a straight pipe center section and just putting the better of the two muffler sections that I had. It was far from ideal, but because of the time constraints it had to do. While at the dinner Saturday night Dick, the owner of the black TTV6 Urq, asked me if I would be interested in a stainless muffler for my Urq. Not even caring what it was I immediately said yes. At the dyno session the next day he comes with this piece which in my way of thinking is GOOD.
A CAC rear section. I think they are a made in Belgium piece. Quality work.
Old out to make room for the new.
and new in it's place
The bad is that the car still didn't run to see how the new rear section was going to sound. I had pulled the fuel filter thinking that it was plugged with 20yr old gas and crap from the tank. It was new, but no telling how much junk is in the tank. I ordered a new filter from Autohausaz, but couldn't stand to wait so I tested the old filter today by pumping gas through the filter and into a bottle. It seemed to be just fine, so I went to looking for intake track vacuum leaks even though I had already checked while at the hotel and Friday night late. I must have been tired, because the hose feeding the intercooler was half off of the end cap. It's tucked way up there and hard to get to or even see, but I didn't know whether to be upset that it kept me from driving all weekend or be happy that is all it was.
The good again isthat the hose is clamped back on and the car is on the road again.
It sounds pretty good, but my headlights don't work and it was just getting dark when I got it back together so I haven't driven it much. Besides that it has a howl that I'm not sure where it is coming from (suspect the center carrier bearing) that pretty much drowns any other sound out.
Good score indeed ;o] And to think I turned it down a couple weeks ago since I already had exhaust plans, but after the amount of sweat equity you put into that car to get it to the event, you surely deserve it.
In my ~12 hour slumber las night I missed your message. Got it this morning. The lights are not relayed from the factory, most people either need to - or WILL need to do this in order to take the load off the switch and limit the current traveling thru the dash.
I cant wait to hear it with the straight center pipe and that muffler on it.
and yea, it's the center support bearing. Our event sponsor 034 Motorsport has them, give 'em a call 8)

Martin, I hope mine sounds that good from the outside. It doesn't seem to be that nice inside. Was that with the center section straight piped through?
I took Her Urq out for a daylight test run today and actually did more than go around the block. In all I put about 90miles on the car, most of them up in the mountain curves outside of Las Vegas and as high an elevation as ~8500'. The car ran great, even though there is now a new list of little things to fix. The hood needs to be adjusted as it kept popping the drivers side corner on bumps or gusts of wind from passing trucks. The drivers side window doesn't work, the ox sensor light is on, the vacuum check valve sets up a whine below boost, the center support bearing howls at times even though it seemed to get better as it was driven, still need a proportioning valve so I can have rear brakes also, slight antifreeze leaks at both the temp switches on the head drivers side, a possible oil leak at the turbo center section (it was smoking pretty good after pulling hard up the hill), blinkers, horn, blower, and ac. That was with just one trip, but all in all the car ran great, especially for being parked for 20yrs. I took a bunch of pictures with my new phone, but apparently I don't know how to use it, because I got home and 90% of the pictures were missing. Here is what I got.
Her Urq at Mount Charlston on the cutover between Lee's ski resort and Charlston.
About 50 miles into the test, she turned over 94k so I guess that will be my purchase/back on the road benchmark starting mileage.
One of the vids that I was able to save. The videos are just off of the phone and you may get motion sickness trying to deal with the hand held camera. Sorry!! I will have to come up with a mount of some sort.
Still alot to do, but I'm driving it to work in a few hours and it's come a long way. I sure wish that I would have seen that intercooler hose while at the Alliante Friday because we only drove the loop around the lake and Valley of Fire of about 150miles. I did 2/3s of that today . Oh Well :(
Exhaust sounds good. To clear the O2 light press the button on the box that the speedo cable goes to under the windshield cowl. You could grease the center driveshaft joint to see if that quiets the bearing sound down.
All in all the car looks great. And I noticed you have heated seats too.
I used Coupe quattro CAC centre piece with extension to make it fit the typ 85 body. Rear muffler was Ur-q spec with tailpipes extended to fit the 4kq bumper. He now offers a version with extended tailpipes as well. I was couple of years to early for him

No, the fuel filter was just fine, but I had blown a hose to the intercooler that was real tough to see, especially with eyes that had only a few hours sleep all week.
Martin, I still have the CAT on, but still like the sound.

That will clear the light? What does it have to do with O2? I'm all about it if it will clear because I only have a 30 day temporary before it needs to be smogged and registered. They won't even touch it with the light on.
John, you might still need to check some hoses. At least to the dash for the 'boost' gauge. Im not seeing much boost when you throttle it up and not much vacuum when you let off. In stock form you should still see that needle go up to about 2/3 scale, just below the checkered flag.
Congrats on the drive - and the phone! I was about to buy you a daggum phone myself lol Im basically out of town for two weeks solid and then home for a week. Maybe we can get some more sorting done on both Mars Ur's that didn't make the event. Then all go for a lil UrQ only afternoon drive somewhere.
The O2 light was simply triggered by a mileage counter. Where the two halves of the speedo cable meet in the cowling above the firewall, you press the little button in there and it resets the light. Purely mechanical...

Yea Sean, I don't think that I have full boost either, but I'm not sure that I trust that stock boost gauge either. It's hard for me to decide since it doesn't pull as hard as the 225hp TT, but then at 165hp it shouldn't. It also doesn't seem to hit as hard as the old MCs in the 5ktq did at 3-5k, but that could just be cam and I don't know what is in that head. I know that you said it was a pretty torquey cam so I wasn't expecting a high revving type motor. I don't have major leaks, but I could still have some small stuff going on even though it starts right up. The only time it struggled at all was trying to restart at 8k feet elevation and then only a little more cranking. It could use some more boost though.
So what did Audi figure on the o2 sensor light....after so many miles it would be time to service the sensor whether it was still controlling or not? I guess it makes sense for the time, but not compared with a modern ecu that is able to bias a signal as the sensor gets weaker and weaker until it has reached a predetermined threshold and then throws a CEL. I just never knew that was how Audi did it. I'll try tomorrow to reset the light.
