My suggestion... skip the rotational balancing if your DMF stock flywheel looks good and you're goals are to shift at the stock rpm limit... static balance the rods tho as even my DM Forged I-Beams needed some work still...

But if SMF is where you're headed anyhow then by all means do a complete balance...

Oh and then we have This .. the Internal Balance Theory brought to you by FRP

So the links both of you guys sent me are completely conflicting theory's lol. :bangshead:

I did manage to get a lead today from a local vag tuner shop on what is regarded as a very reputable performance machine shop who has experience with Audi i5s. I'll try an shoot em a call tomorrow and run my thoughts by this guy and see what he has to say.

I'm debating on whether or not I want to tear down and reassemble the engine. I'd have all the special tools from my hookup at Audi, but I don't have any experience rebuilding bottom ends at the dealer level. I'm not sure how confident I'd be in honing and checking clearances either. :idunno:

If you have the funds, send it to Jeff Gerner at FRP and be done... So many people/shops talk the talk but don't walk the walk they preach ;)

A year ago I would have said "whatever" to balancing on budget builds. But after driving along in Matt's casa S6 built by Jeff Gerner I'm a believer. Same engine mounts as my 4k but it felt like butter whereas the 4k felt... How should I put it. Raw. The difference was incredible, night and day. Balancing doesn't cost that much and if you're putting rods in and VEMS it's totally worth it. You've already gone that far, why not enable the car to function at its best.

AND seeing how much weight Hank took out of dad's old stroker crank. I can't wait to see what Dustin says about that engine.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to get some info on what guys have done with their diverter valves on non-stock location turbo setups?

I plan on doing an apikol fmic but with hanks manifold I'm not sure using my existing silicone boost hoses will fit without modification or having to change the setup entirely. Which leads me also in need of figuring out an intake/turbo inlet setup that will work correctly with a big maf since I'll have to be remotely tuned on motronic.

Cliff notes: Paragraphs summarizing wtf I've been doing the past two years and why the car still ain't running right. Probably should have kept my s2000 too. :drunk:

So, uh. It's been a minute since I posted last. Lol. A lot has been happening in my life the past year or so and I never find myself in much of a mood to write but I've got a nice lazy day today so I figured I'd give you guys some updates on my car... if I only knew where to begin.

As of right now, I've owned the car a week shy of 2 years and ive put maybe 500 miles on it grand total. Sometime after my last post I made the choice to purchase Marc and Hank's joint efr kit with a 7163 iwg and custom map motronic. While I was waiting for the parts I started taking care of issues with the car, beginning with a new timing belt kit, noisy pulley, front engine seals and threw a set of 7a cams in while I was at it. Of course the cam gear keyway sheared when torquing it back down even with the gear holder and thus began my long dark journey.

So wouldn't you know it, I had no idea it was sheared until trying to start the car. It obviously wasn't compressing correctly so I took it apart, threw a tommis billet on it, and retimed it. Performed a leakdown once back together and found 20 and 25% leakdown on two cylinders, but otherwise ran normally. At this time I just figured oh well, since I was planning on building it eventually anyway, and went on to pull it and sent it out to be built by Jeff at FRP.

Jeff claimed no valves were bent, but he had found some corrosion on the valve seats probably from it sitting before I bought it. So I had him do the works, forged pistons, rods, all new valves, springs, light porting of the head to pick up some easy cfm, arp hardware, balanced, etc. I'll make a list at some point. Also replaced the bad rack and had a fab shop replace the cracked driver's rack mount while it was out and did Hersh engine mounts and 034 snub with bracket and trans mounts.

So it's about June or July 2016 by the time I get the engine back in. At this time all the mods have been installed to support the 7163 and a new southbend stage 4 with a full face ceramic disk and a refurbished 7a flywheel that Marc had been kind enough to provide for me. I had a local shop balance the flywheel then went along putting it all back together. Performed a near flawless first start but found the turbo oil return line threads weren't tightened completely at the block. A few drops of oil later and the car runs great throughout breakin except it's hitting a wall at 4200. Before I get the chance to diagnose why, the valvecover gasket splits near the front left corner and spews all but a qt of oil out over my 40 mile highway drive home without me noticing. I, of course, not having installed my permanent oil pressure gauge yet, have no idea until the red light flashes. I immediately shut it down but was getting a strange scratching noise so obviously freaked out.

I call up Jeff and send the engine to him and he checks it over and deems it's okay. I want to take a moment here and make a note about how amazingly helpful Jeff has been throughout my entire experience with him. He definitely went above and beyond to help me out during this time and I would recommend him to anywone. That being said, I get the engine back again, put it all back together and it starts intermittently. Turns out the crank cog keyway sheared and it was out of time just barely enough to cause the intermittent start. Now, I haven't actually told Jeff this yet so you all shut your mouths, but I can't really blame him anyway. I hear it's not uncommon and I never sent the flywheel with the engine so he would've had no reference to tell anyway lol. A new cog and the engine runs exactly how it did last time. I almost forgot, while the engine was out the second time I had to pull the rack again because the brand new boot had torn. Really.

At this point we are present day and the car is at a buddy's shop with vagcom. We found that the wall it's hitting at 4200 has something to do with how far away the engine speed sensor is from the flywheel teeth. We sanded down the speed sensor side of the sensor mount by 0.5mm at a time until it finally made contact. Each time the wall would go higher up the rpm band and it seemed completely gone after letting the flywheel eat at the sensor once it finally made contact, but upon driving, it intermittently hesistates around 3k only in first gear and hits the wall at 5500 now. So now we'll slap in and shim a new sensor and see where that goes. I've heard of reference signal problems with a 7a flywheel on vems but, this is the first time I've heard of this happening with engine speed and on motronic.

So friends, that is my long, drawn out explanation for my oddly brief introduction and disappearance. Hopefully this'll get worked out soon and I might actually get to enjoy the car and some shows this season to put faces to names. I also have a ton of photos to load sometime but my computer has been down for some months and I just wrote all of this on a smart phone. Oh and I got married sometime last October amidst all of this.

I'll try to post more haha

Sounds like you are heading the right direction, as long as your wife agrees ;)

Move! Heck of a story there... I'm surprised you're having issues with the speed sensor, perhaps it was just going bad. Moving them around always fixed any issues we've ever had, even on my 4k with the 60-2 wheel up front.

Once it's all running well and you have full boost and rpm make sure to post again! All you call do is have patience and a good motherfucking sense of humour!

Update:

So turns out the speed sensor issue was actually a ring gear issue. Pulled the starter to check out the flywheel and the section of the ring gear that was under the sensor during the bad signal appears to have been corroded on the inside and ate away at some of the teeth. We're assuming this flywheel had probably been sitting outside somewhere in the dirt or something for a bit too long but unfortunately I never noticed the defect on installation as it was barely noticeable with the flywheel being painted...

So. After the discovery I ordered a southbend billet steel flywheel and viola. She now finally revs smooth as can be and hiccup free all the way up.

Now I need to figure out why I'm only making 14psi when target is supposedly 24. :bangshead:
I can manage to squeeze 17lbs while brake boosting. Guess I'll be doing a boost leak test next and testing the wastegate actuator to make sure it's aligned properly after I had a shop mount and clock the turbo while they fabbed the intercooler pipe. I know my wastegate preload is set at 3mm and I'm gonna run it by Marc to see if it's supposed to be at a specific preload. Other than that, I'm kind of at a loss at the moment.

Anyway, here's a pic of the junk flywheel. Oh how such a small difference can be such a huge screwup.

woaaaaaaah.

BTW, those ring gears press on and off. if you wanted to, you could salvage it by throwing on an AAN dual mass ring gear or something.

holy hell man. nice find, sorry for the heartache getting there!

Yeah that's wild! Hell of a find.. that would have taken me a while to figure out I think.

Can't wait to hear driving impressions now.

Figured I'd post another update while I've got the evening to myself lol

Still haven't gotten the boost issue resolved. Thought it was going to be as easy as swapping the borg ebcs for the stock n75 after having a 'doh moment but that didn't work out.

Reason being, during the test drive I apparantly managed to lock up the 1-2 shift collar coming out of second after running up the gear to check the pressure. Definitely the weirdest failure I've ever experienced with absolutely no warning. Shifter got sloppy immediately after leaving 2nd causing me to grind 3rd and leaving 1st and 2nd extremely stiff and hard to find then shortly after leaving me completely locked out of both. Pulled the linkage and confirmed internal.

Anyway, I'm getting down to crunch time. Marc's rebuilding and shipping me an fyf 6spd that my buddy is gonna throw in while the car is still at his shop. Then I'm gonna have him try to knock out the boost issue with maybe a week to go until the local event I've been shooting for. And hopefully I'll have a couple days to put a few hundred miles on it. That's if everything pans out smoothly anyway.

I suppose at least this time the failure only moved my 6 spd timeline up (By a lot) instead of just wasting time and money. My wife is so proud haha.

Project trainwreck continues!
