The Project Pad

Spent some time today prepping for wiring. Shrink wrapped what stuff is so that it is easier when working on/in the car. I think all of this tedious work will speed things up when I actually start!





And my helper... not really, but he likes hanging out in the car.

This project is great!
on the subject of Electric Power steering - I used a later MR2 pump when I did my old V8 coupe. You can see the progress here:

It was a good - not great solution.

certainly had power steering but it was a little heavy and the pumps are noisy

Good to know on the noise and heavy steering, I did look at the mr2 pump when doing my preliminary research but wanted to install a new more modern pump. I still haven’t 100% decided on the electric pump route. If I do it I think I will be putting the pump in the back (under) the car... going to spend some time on the fuel system this weekend I think to figure out space. I’v also looked at upgrading the bomb to a modern lightweight accumulator...

All of this could be a phase II / next winter as I would really like to have it running before next winter!!

Manifold looks nice. I’m convinced that these cars sound so much cooler through a tubular manifold !
Decent sized turbo !!!!

In the wires that looks really good . I need to find something like that for my 83. You print on it and then heat shrink the labels ?

It just a Dymo label maker, then you buy dymo shrink tube that is in the cartridge and print away. Quite reasonable and makes life with wiring much better later. If the wires are in a really harsh environment I throw clear shrink wrap overtop so that the labels don’t get destroyed.

So we finally got some decent enough weather for me to get 27 years of grime mostly off. About as good as I’m going to get it without a complete disassembly and a steam cleaner and hoist.

Looks better in person... and some stuff just wasn’t coming off regardless of how hard I scrubbed.

The underside looks really good . I always thought that the cars up there suffered .
I don’t know if you mentioned it already but if you plan to do anything with that brake bomb , do it now ! Easiest time to work on the rack and stuff

Miraculously the bomb is leaking... I am however looking at keeping the hydraulic assist - currently looking at a few different composite accumulators to replace it with - also looking at an electric power steering pump, need to decide sooner than later...

Working on replacing rear subframe bushings... maybe I should have done a search first but I didn’t.

So after trying a few techniques the one that worked by far the best was as follows:

Loosen all 4 bolts holding the subframe.

Remove bolts and lower whichever side you are doing to give access to the top.


I used an air chisel to remove the rubber on the top of the bushing as shown



Then a floor jack under frame, 18 mm socket between car and bushing and then use the car weight as a press.



A couple of hits with the air chisel under neath and it presses itself out...

Moved to the front end tonight, I have more cleaning and some POR15 paint to apply before I start putting stuff back together.







Definitely prefer the cleaned up topside view.
