The new kid put a serious dent in my working schedule, much less my personal project time. I did get a few minutes in this weekend after hours to pull the bottom end apart. All other rods and pistons check out but check out the textbook shear action on the ARPs on the failed rod.

I don't understand how that rod bolt could undergo shear. Any theories?

Problem is a lot of the pieces are not in the motor, and somewhere on the I-215. There is a bit of evidence that points to that shown fastener busting, then bending the other side over and snapping it off as well. Half of the other fastener is still in the other hole as well. I don't have the lower rod cap, which would likely tell a lot.

I dunno, I don't know how much elongation would occur before the fastener would shear in tensile, but that is really the story being told. Maybe several thousand stretches on a bum fastener finally resulted in a shear? A little work hardening?

I think what Chris is getting at is that it can't really be shear failure from a tensile load in this case. Shear failures require the primary causal forces to be parallel to the shear plane. Could be tensile failure, but considering this isn't a high RPM motor, it still leaves questions.

Good call Chris. I knew I was going to be nailed on saying a shear in tensile.

Pssh...semantics, lol.

And looking at those 4 good remaining assemblies, I realized that aside from the 5 cylinder being a superior engine with an unmatched sound...when you kill a hole, you can just sell the pieces to the 4 cylinder guys. But I doubt any of those 4 cylinder guys are going to find someone building a Geo Metro to put the three remaining assemblies into, lol.

OK good, I am significantly less baffled now :) Usually we just refer to failure as failure... although some define failure as the point at which the yield strength is reached rather than when the ultimate tensile strength is reached because when most parts yield, they have by failed by design.
