Again though, when I see that my IAT's (at the IM) are only 5-8deg over the ambient air temp at a cruise (5-20% throttle position), I have to say that the pipe being over the MUCH hotter manifold (surface temp) isn't hurting it all that much, if at all. Is the difference so minimal only because of the heatshield, probably not. However, Audi's engineers put it there for a reason

[/quote] the pipe is where it is, so a heat shield is smart damage control for the less than ideal pipe location. you will not see large temp gains in IAT once the car is moving as i said before there is a lot of cfm in your intake pipe, which is sucking the extra heat out of the pipe and intake manifold. it is a lot of air absorbing not a lot of heat- just heat at a high temp.
as for a stupid plastic spacer. skip it on a car that has an engine compartment. what a gimicky POS. it separates the intake from the "hot" head so that it is left dangling in the hot engine compartment. nothing like flushing money and time down the toilet. oh, and on an mc1/2 engine where everyone thinks they are needed it is even worse- disconnecting the intake from a nice heat sink to let it dangle right above the exhaust manifold. yeah brilliant.

I'm running a spacer to clear my hydraulic pump and 7a coolant neck so it's not useless

No real updates, but I'm excited... so I'm posting anyway

The car just got picked up (enclosed trailer, classy!) and we'll be tiggin' in the mornin'. Cold side is up first, then might have to wait until Monday to finish up the hot side because I forgot to get a 4" vband (downpipe won't come out of the engine bay without one). So... vidz on Monday! (Vanjen, Tial MVR content, Iroz Motorsports manifolds, and Holslut action!!!)

All the fab work is finished up now! I did a quick five minute shake-down tune. The first thing I noticed is that the car has some kind of looseness in the front suspension that I need to address (maybe just need to tighten the struts down better). So I went out to do a few pulls (mind you I don't have a wastegate at the moment so boost cut was set to ~19 psi or 230 kPa. That is high enough that I can modulate the pedal and keep it from going too high. At first it was set to 15 psi and I hit the cut immediately, then I raised it to 230. It was very rich at first and I got to lean it out a bit, but then I started getting another issue. Every time the car would hit about 5k-5500 RPMs, the ECU would reset so I never really got to test it at higher RPMs or higher boost.
I decided to head back into the shop to check it out, but as soon as I got to the gate outside the shop, something was wrong with the shift linkage. It got stuck in reverse with a loosey-goosey shifter, so something came loose. I will find out tomorrow. The ECU issue is a ground that I forgot to hook up.
First impressions are that the turbo sounds awesome, the car runs pretty smoothly, not having power steering SUCKS (mostly because I feel like I'm going to twist something in the steering column), and the fabricator said that the car felt good and he was seeing 15 psi by 3500 RPM... I'm not quite sure if I believe that because the RPMs go up quickly in second gear (hard to judge when it really hit), but I would say for sure that it was hitting that kind of boost by 4-4.5k which is pretty good for this turbo in my opinion. I'll get logs when I get the shift linkage sorted out. I can't wait to get that figured out, a wastegate in, and tear it up a bit. It seems like this is going to be a very volatile setup

That's cool, Chris! Hope you are getting some good heat shielding for the intake pipe over the EM and right next to that ginormous turbo.

Yep, there will definitely be a good turbo blanket on the turbine housing and some heat wrap/other shielding in choice locations. Really, its not that big of a deal, but it can't hurt.
I'm very impressed by the Vibrant couplers. They allow for a crazy amount of movement in the piping which is awesome. They are sorta hard to get on, but they do a great job once they are. It makes me feel so good to have no silicone in the system

The downpipe/exhaust transition is really nice too, so I'm happy with the whole setup.

What's wrong with silicone in the intake system?

Don't have to worry about couplers blowing off, ripping, ballooning, etc., etc. I just don't like them! If you do them right, they work, but I guess I just never do them quite right. I'm a big fan of having high-quality, nicely engineered parts in my car (or in anything really) and this just makes my car that much more robust.

When you are running the level of boost are/will run(ning), I can understand.
If I ever get money for my B4 AEB project, I will run Al pipes with silicone couplers.
It'll be ghetto.

Nothing wrong with some properly setup silicone. The best thing to do is get some ties between the pipes and you won't have to worry about blowouts.
