so im thinking about running no thermostat....

any grievances with that idea?

not on this end. i am not running one, but dedicated strip car VS streeted strip car... you know.

well....

the cons would be.

im curious to this, as is Chris (oldbetsy) cause hes thinking about taking his out to, for whatever reason.

i would do it just to keep the hosing easier. if i dont run a tstat, i can keep the bypass hole in the block plugged, and run the turbo coolant return line right into the side of the rad on the passenger side. done and done.

res-less then?

could maybe cause heating issues in the winter.... you know, not getting up to temp cuz all de coolant is goin thru the rad in -10 degrees?

oh wait, no heater means no winter driving anyways. no defroster.

res-less yes. im going to try the layout i have now....with the rad cap being the highest point in the system, with a returning overflow can right off of the cap area, i know youre picking up what im putting down here. kinda like how hondas are setup, and they make way more power the vw's do....so if you cant beat em join em. :bashtard:

and yes, no winter driving. no heater core. no heater. no rain driving either for that matter, lol.

yup. we been hours at that discussion HAHAHAHA

only downfall i saw of running non tstat was the coolant going through the rad too fast and not actually getting....cooled. BUT i then figured with that rather large rad core, and two 10 inch fans....i may be alright.

Hey Jon :)

- about the thermostat, keep the outer "ring", and break out the "guts".
The ring will slow down the flow and allow the coolant to do its job.

The nice thing about no thermostat is you can cool the car down extra after a run, which will take temp out of the intake, underhood, etc.

That makes zero sense whatsoever. Faster is always better.

If you think about it, say you're moving the coolant through twice as fast. That does mean that it spends half the time in the radiator. It also spends half the time in the engine. It's also going through twice as many times so it would seem to balance out.

However.

Imagine that the coolant stayed in the radiator long enough to be cooled to ambient temperature by the time it got to the bottom. If that would be the case, that means the bottom of the radiator is doing minimal heat rejection relative to the top. Moving the coolant through faster means that the temps are more uniform across the radiator so the radiator as a whole is working more efficiently. The same is true for inside the engine - uniform temps mean that you don't have a cold block and a hot head.

i follow that logic completey. i was just totally wrong i guess, lol.

Sorry if I came off as a weenie. I just hear it so often that it hurts every time I hear it.

There is a kernel of truth for it in engines with outlet-side thermostats, in that the thermostat is used as a restrictor. But it's not to "slow the coolant down" so much as it is to build higher water pressure in the engine, which raises the local boiling point. Important on certain engines with hot-spot problems (AHEM small-block Chevy)

got my breather setup pretty done. just need to send the thing off to get welded all up and then find another point to mount it to as well cause its a bit flimsy with just those two tabs holding it on the rain tray there.

this was my first experience with ss braided twist on hose ends, i mainly just deal with the stuff you cut to length put in a large press at work and crimp it on, and i will have to say.....that twist ends suck major.

anyway, making a relay panel hopefully this evening. then perhaps running the harness in the bay to get that all set to go. few minor things like making ss brake line and mounting my blow off valve and wastegate still need to be done. and then once i get my fuel rail back i can get that all situated.

ya like those style hoses, eh?

they are the MAJOR SUCK. sharp pokey little bastids anyways....

the catch can is steel? gonna powdercoat it when done? be sure to protect the threads somehow so they dont get coated....
