so i did some messing around out in the cold today..... it is snowing now, and it was ~30 degrees out today. it was nice and crisp with no wind or rain.
got the coilovers finally done. all that remains is to assemble the housings with the new strut cartridges and all the rest of the gear. of course, after i paint them

here is the progression. i only took pix after i had done one side. but i start out with a random I-beam for material. making the weld on rings for the sleeves to sit on. just so happens i have an almost identical match in hole saw size. 54mm is just right there, hardly any work to make it fit. and for outer i used 76mm. i do not need alot of area for the sleeve, just enough to weld up actually.
so i drill, and start the outer ring.

then move to inner ring, so i can use the same pilot hole.

go back to the outer, and get it deep enough to not need the pilot hole anymore, and finish inner hole.

finish outer hole, and i have two rough perches.

clean out the bore to fit just so over the strut tubes, and clean up outsides as well.

set up the sleeve on the strut housing, so i make sure to get the perch flat all the way around for the sleeve.

weld it up, and viola, a coilover strut housing is made.

and the fronts: make a pattern, and cut out. same thought here, but a little different. since i am making my own front steering arm setup, i want a little bit different attachment out there. going to use heims joints on custom tie rod arms, so i want to trap the ends in between the material.
cut pattern, setup for flat, weld up. had to cut down the coils to fit under the cartridge cap.

and the rest of the partz.....

B4 CF Hood on now

I like the color man. I vote to keep it that way. Love the car! It is going to be a beast and a half.

Looks god man, before you weld your new tire rood spindles turn them in, that will allow to run wider tires, and I will defiantly brace them.

and i assembled the coilovers right quick. i am going to paint them today, and final assemble tomorrow probably. with the new inserts, and i forgot to order the 034 strut top things..... that is being done today as well....
thanks for the compliments guys. i appreciate it. makes it worth while to document stuff like this when a guy gets feedback. makes him know that people are actually even looking at it. and i am still wishy-washy now on the color.... that hood really did something to the color, brings it out more maybe. when we go get more paint, i will decide color then.... but if i keep the maroon, i am going to do the outer sides of the hood body colored, and leave the top of the car, including all pillars, black.
and Janis, i did not even think about relocating the tie rod arms in for tire clearance when i made them :? thats how new i am to the audi stuff haha. if you have any info for me on this subject, i am all ears.....
http://www.motorgeek.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=24600and a couple more pixorz....

I can not recall how much they need to be turned in, you can check that with KW, another thing upper rubber strut mounts really do not work, ( with straps it my) I had brand new 034 track density upper mounts and after this season they are completely shot , im going for solid mounted upper struts.

ok.... i am looking into some solid mounts as well. LMK if you find something or where i may? and would that be front only or both front and rear? thanks Janis. also, you might like to know i have decided against the 13's and going 15" wheels

its too much to try and make the 13's pan out so i can use them on both cars.....

Color looks great man, I vote keep it.
Can't wait to see the finished product. There is some really cool custom work going into this

that red does look pretty good. i would approve if it stayed

plus there's the extra work factor of prepping and repainting, so sometimes it's better to be lazy

why thank you Derek. and you have the ability to critique it in person as well....

therein lies my major problem with the colors. I dont have to do any of that. just buy the paint.
i suppose i should go buy the rims now, and toss them on so we can see what the Gold looks like. here, these are what i have decided with for rims:

Damn that paint looks slick. And then when I saw the CF hood on it I had to change my panties.....I mean boxers, I don't wear panties.
That paint job will make plenty of people's jaws drop. I think you won with that gamble. JACKPOT!!
I told Technoquatt that CF hood is what a real Carbon Fiber hood should look like. And the almost 30# reduction is not a bad perk. I think the green metallic would look good too, BUT this maroonish color is more unique and hits baller status. Can you tell already how much I like the paint??
By the way can I get a job application from your employer?? I want to work on my car at job sites too

And only a genius would think of using metal from the IBeam (that's what they are right?)
I know i'm 25 but can you adopt me?? Me and your son can trade places. I have a nice 2 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment, good roommate, a full gym and swimming pool and spa. I won't cry (alot) and I'm potty trained (well almost, but coffee and cigs in the morning can wreck alot of people

)

i did some work today..... pressed in the rear 034 control arm bushings, and installed the arms and the rear diff. also tossed in the 4kQ driveshaft i got from Derek. next, throw the mock-up 01E under it and get it all jacked up where i want it to be. then bolt in the subframe and make the trans mounts.
Derek and Sean (Lt Sarge) stopped by for a bit to check it out and drop off the shifter stuff. i was playing around with the rear, test fitted one of my 13" slick rims on it. it really looks the biz with that rim on there, and the wide ass slick. almost makes me re-think 15" rims. i can still get another pair of the Bogart rims and more of the same size slick.
some more pix cuz thats the way i am.....
boy, does it look ready to rock.

coils look very nice!
im super jeulous. i would be able to afford and adjustability until well into the spring for my car. i gotta save up for some Megasquirt and then i need a good forged lower end.
sucks cause the B3 springs im running are stiff, but even as lowering springs the car is jacked. probly due to the fact that i really think that the 84' 4kqs weigh a good couple hundred pounds lighter than the 85-87 4kq's and probly 3-400 lighter than a B3. i know its been argued but ive yet to find documented proof. and i know its lighter cause i cant even hardly budge the 80q by myself and the 4000's push quite easily. perhaps derek knows the truth???
i wanna tuck my tires up so bad! i hate arch gap! :x gotta buy more stuff :-D
car looks good! i like the B4 front end, id paint the hood tho, as i cant stand the look of carbon fiber. and those 13's do look pretty schweet on there, id hafta see it with the 15's to sway me towards anything bigger.
good work. lookin sharp
