The 4kq is lighter than the Urq, one reason that many people mention it as a good base for a track car, aside from the availability.

Now, where that weight is, your guess is as good as mine.

Okay, I just found a set of specs that says the US model weighed in a 3072 lbs., which sounds more in line with your numbers Derek. Hey, I think all of the CIS crap I've pulled of mine probably weighs close to 72 lbs, maybe the car will be under 3000 now.

yea, i think i saw a number that the Euro spec cars were 2925... most of that comming in bumpers, lack of cats exc....

72 pounds worth of CIS crap? :woowoo:

I knew it was heavy....

My header downpipe and turbo is 8 pounds lighter then the stock setup... and dementions grew tremedously.. :)

I am erally excited to get this beast on the scale... Im hoping for around 2800... figure factory no AC.. cloth, Euro bumpers, no CIS..... should be close.. Im only 120..

Some of that extra weight for the URQ is found in the hydrolics... Just having a bomb, extra capsity pentosin, big booster... that stuff has to be 20 pounds worth atleast...

Well, between the airbox and fuel metering head you've got about 40lbs. The airbox is nice and light but the metering head is not. Then you've got the injector cooling fan, the warm-up regulator, a big nasty nest of fuel lines, a crapload of vaccum lines, the frequency valve, the Auxilary Air Controller...maybe 72 is a little optimistic, but 50 is reasonable. The AC would be a big reduction too. I'm still undecided on removing it from my car or not. I want to be able to road trip this thing.

Hank,

Great work! For the grille and headlight, you can go with any coupe / 4k /4kq from '85 to '87. Get the grille and upper and lower headlight surrounds (sloping style). The upper headlight ones will need to have the inbound locating tab dremelled off (the newer cars have a cut-out in the fender that the older cars don't have). I did this on my old '83.

Best,
Hank

Well the exhaust is anti Rice thinking... Just a 3 inch downpipe mated to the stock 2.5 exhaust via a bellow with nothing but a dynomax rear muffler... I thought it was going to be super loud, but its actually pertty quiet :o I might change something up... then again, i havn't run it on the freeway or anything yet..

Jared, the coilpacks are an Acura aplication, and i just made my own brackets for them... These particular ones are from a Legend, but they are the same coils that are used on teh NSX, and a local NSX tuner says they are pretty sweet... They are cool, and they clear the hood, so im happy... I have my dwell up around 4.75 which is pretty high i think, in wasted spark mode..

Derek, I do what i can :) Truthfully, I didn't know i had it in me to do a project this quickly... but she is finally coming together...

one thing I see.
Bend up some sheet metal and put it between the turbo and intake manifold before you go out. Reflective aluminum would be a good choice. When hot the turbo will radiate a considerable amount of heat which could create a ping.

Yea,
I'll address that in a few days... Im having a Heat resistant/retardant "blanket" sortof say to help keep heatsoak at bay.. it ends up being a inch or so think composite of stuff that really keeps heat out well.... In fact, I am having the blanket made to come up and around the housing as well...

My father works out at a coal powerplant here, and they custom make this stuff on the boilers to keep heat out... my dad says its pretty amazing stuff..

But its on the agenda.... 8)

Thanks dude

The later S1s used a heatshield that went between the turbo and head and wrapped over the turbo like a full shroud. It pretty much trapped all the heat underneath keeping the hood and head cool. From what you describe, that comes to mind.

Looks great! I'll take one of those heat shields while your at it.

Nice work! I blink once and your car is basically done. Unbelievable!

I noticed your air temp sensor is on the intake where the cold start injector used to live. That's where mine is too, and I want to move it. It heat soaks pretty badly there. It hasn't been a big deal when you're really moving, but when you slow down or idle, the air temp can move up almost to coolant temp.

meh,, i thought i posted this last night but...

I made a little headway on the car... Got a dope blanket made.. To answer your question Alan, The material is suprisingly simular to like a wool, but it kindof feels like header wrap... It smokes like crazy for like 30 minutes kindof like header wrap does, and then it simmers down..and it browns out a little... i still keep a watchful eye on it though, espcially after watching that GTI go up ...

The thing is pretty sweet though, after 1500 F blasts, you can pull right over and put your hand on top of the blanket and nothing, just ambiant pretty much.. and when you lift the diaper up, it is like a wave of heat.. I think it is kindof like James said about the early cars having a heat shroud to block in the heat...

And for your question on whether it helps while moving jim.. It has to.. My IC isn't nearly as big or efficient as yours, but without it, the IM would still be pretty warm after blasts around, and if it sat for more than a couple of minutes, it would be almost too hot to touch.. I would say that the overall temp difference of the IM temp is pretty substancial.

anywho... In other news.. I am going to put all the stuff i upgraded on the market in the next week, so if you want something that you don't see in the car, its availible..

Very nice to look at, but they want $350!!! Yikes!!!!

Be carefull wrapping all this stuff. It does work great for racing, but it can really reduce the life of the components. 304 Stainless can turn to carbide if held at high temps for a long time. Cast Iron will just crack and start to crumble on you. It will speed up cracks inside the turbine housing.

I think something that directs the heat away from the motor and still allows it to escape is best, like a radiant heat shield. Hanks is kinda in between the two. I plan on ducting the header and turbo heat up through the hood vent some day.

Just wanted to tell everybody I had the pleasure of meeting Hank and checking out his '81 urquattro 20v efi at Pikes Peak. Several of us CO urq guys were at the parking area when a "strange" urq pulled up (strange as in one we didn't know already). The car had a great sound and great stance with those beefy BBS 16" wheels. One of the very few aftermarket wheels that I actually like on the car.

I later had the pleasure of riding in Hanks car- and I must say it pulls very nice once the boost builds. I would not be a bit surprised if it makes more peak power than my '84 with 3B (IA RS2 turbo, EM, Eiche software). Nice work Hank. Is it faster..oh hard to say - we had the chance to race from the stop light but your car stalled. Ohhh cheap shot! I couldn't resist. It wasn't the right place anyway.

Oh yeah I was thinking about your car later on my drive home - I do think you should check for a boost leak. I know you said it was some valve (bypass? - can't remember what you said) but the hissing while the motor was on-song really sounds like a boost leak. Find a way to hook up a compressor to the cold side of your turbo and regulate about 15 psi through the system - any boost leaks will be easy to find.

Anyway - Hank you've done great job with the car so far - I know you have even bigger plans for it - hopefully you'll make it back to CO with it one of these days..

Yo Brandon,
It was a pleasure meeting up with you colorado guys.. I really enjoyed myself, and the cars there were amazing..

Here is a pic I took at the bottom of Pikes..

Image

That car of yours is a sweet ride.. I'll trade you strait across dude... :)

Anywho, I really doubt we have an Intake leak.. I just think your not used to that big of a turbo sucking up small animals off the road... I'll pressure check it, but there is no real spot for it too leak.. I would bet the 710 valves are the contributing factor, they close really late, and let out air at idle.. Ill look into it though..

I just signed up for the "list" so hopefully i'll get something up there.. don't really get it yet.. :)

Oh yes, and that was a cheap shot about the light race :D .. damn TPS.. It really gave us fits this weekend... so much that it is getting a redo this week.. before the coilovers go on.. Next time im in CO, its on dude.. hehe

Anywho here is a final thought for the weekend at PIKES
Image

what nut jobs... someone said " usually there are like 4 of those things running"

I said " good to see Darwin is still working"

pretty good

Hank, Sorry we never connected in person! I wanted to see the race from Devil's Playground, but I guess all the fellow geekers stayed at the lower parking lot. If you are ever coming to SLC or passing through to visit your unkle in Park City, call me!

UPDATE:

So i suck at putting my progress on my page.. Im a slacker what can i say..

Image
So I ate a 15k mile turbo a couple of weeks ago due to using a cheap filter. It was just one of those "universal" ones from Auto Zone for like 25 bucks, but it they really fit nicly on my setup.. Anyways, the flange is rubber, and being directly on the turbo, and not being silicone made it break down.. . Yea a piece broke down, sucked right into my turbo.. Tore that beatch up in a blink of the eye at full tilt.. :bashtard:

So, i was at a crossroad... put a new wheel, and rebuilding it would be probly a few hundred, and so i decided to be the mule, and tryout the new GT3071R 034 turbo on the 20v.
Image
Should be fun, something is just cool about being able to spin a turbo with your breath that supports 400+WHP.. The other cool thing about the GT turbo's are just that the center section an inch or so smaller, so you gain what seems like a mile to put filters and crap on..

Image

So my motor plans are as follows.. I have really been itching to run Methonal for a while... You start looking at turbohappy vehicles, and you realize quickly that WI is a booster, and Meth aka ALKY, is a sweet way.. Tons of 450WHP buick GN/EVO's/STI running stock internals manifolds with uprated turbo's running 25 pounds with ALKY on 93 oct..
http://www.turbobuick.com/forums/forumd ... forumid=14

So i was gonna just buy a kit like what those guys are running, but i really wanted to have more then a gallon tank, and i wanted to utilize my IIC, and be able to map the Methonal, so i went with a SS injector from 034, with a pump a 8 gallon tank in the trunk, and a regulator.. This way it is just like a seperate fuel system, and tunning should be very persise..
I want to run around town with 91 in the tank and be able to push 26 through that new powerhouse mentioned above..

Image
Then i finally got around to putting my coilovers on, and spent last weekend putting those camber plates on from GC.. IT turned out really well. I am stoked.. I havn't raelly driven it much because cars are just no fun with chewed up turbos, but tomarrow should be fun, plus its suppose to rain allday for slidding madness...

Anyways any questions? I think that sums up the last 2 weeks..
