Ok, now that she is running again the dreaded gremlins are already starting. I went to start it this morning and revved it a few times when all of a sudden the pedal went to the floor. I found that the throttle cable had popped out of the pedal linkage and the bushing was pretty well shot and no retaining clip to be found. Are they available and what are people doing to fix the problem? They aren't the easiest place to get to, so a one time fix would be nice.

This is the same issue my car had for a while, right Dad? There isn't a retaining clip. It is a press on.
Try this part number.... 191-721-559

It is a VW part number, but they are stiffer plastic, and give a way better feel. If I recall correct, I needed 2 of them. My Euro 81 had pins, but they are still on a loose nasty foamy piece. Going to the updated piece made a very nice and responsive throttle

Well it has a clip on it now. One that holds the crappy foam bushing from popping out. I took a washer with a small hole, and filed a slot into one side of the hole so that it could go over the end of the pin at the bushing, slide into the slot, and retain the bushing until I get something else. Thanks for the link.

Way to go John, car looks good, now if only you knew someone with a URQ and welding skills that could make some new exhaust for that beast... hmmm

LOL I don't think that 165hp, if it is running well, is anything close to being called a beast, but it does need some exhaust work. The rear muffler, as you probably remember from the pictures, is probably mostly gone with only a few bits of rust left over on the hangers. The rest of the exhaust actually looks pretty decent and they came with 2.5" which should be plenty to flow stock numbers. I will probably just weld a muffler on it for now to get it registered so that I can get some miles and bugs worked out and I can't get it to loud if I expect the wife to drive it.....even for one day a year.

It started right up this morning and is sure tempting to take it for a spin around the block. I may have to take the TT out for a scouting run of the neighborhood and then go see just how bad things really are and see if it runs or just idles. I wanted to paint the radiator support before putting it back together, but soon realized that prepping for paint before it got to hot to paint wasn't going to happen this morning even if I did start at 4am. It may have been to hot then as I imagine it was already ~95deg.

Has the leather been getting soaks of conditioner since you have had it down there in the furnace?

I just couldn't do it. The temptation was just to great and I wanted to know a little bit more about the car, it's problems, and see if it would actually run. I started off this morning at 4am wanting to prep the core support for paint before it was to hot. LOL It was already 95deg. I really want to paint before putting the aux radiator, cover, valance, and bumper back on. The passenger fender must have been dinged sometime in it's life and body work was real straight, but I don't think that I have ever seen such a poor paint job. It looks like student housing that has been cleaned for fifty years by brushing a new coat of paint on each semester. It is so thick that it is all spider cracked, so I proceeded to take it off. There must have been some kind of compatibility problem because it acted like it was still soft instead of being cured for 20 years. Good news is the fender is pretty straight under all that crap and the rust is just superficial. Bad news is it's too hot to even work on it let alone paint so I took it for it's first run since 91.

This is what I mean by bad paint.
Image

The whole passenger fender was like this and although I plan on a paint job in the near future I couldn't stand the mismatch and crap paint, plus I was curious to see what was under the paint.

Top of fender

and paint beginning to leave.

When it got to hot to work I closed the hood and took it for a ride looking like this except for taking the A/C belt off and putting on the alternator belt.

1st run on the road since 91. Camera messed up so there are two segments.

All in all it ran pretty decent. It feels pretty tight if around the block can really be an indication. The brakes will need work, but that was to be expected and I'm just glad that they work, have a solid pedal feel, and aren't frozen completely up. The WX seems to rev faster than I remember my MC motors in the 5ktqs. Different cam and solid lifters along with a lighter car would be my bet. Driver's window wouldn't work, the O2 sensor light is on, there is a whine that I'm not sure what it is, and a few other little odds and ends, but I'm pleased with the results from quite a few hours of HOT wrenching time. (Not to be confused with torch time)

If 'she' decides not to take ownership in the UrQ when it's done you can change the thread to Herr UrQ lol

And Dave you really couldn't have picked it up since it is RED!! Thanks again. I think it is going to make for a nice car. It won't be perfect, but it will be a nice DD and will surely get me up to Salt Lake in the nice months.

sweet!! sounds like maybe the center support bearing is causing that whining noise?

The cam gear barely taking the new paint off of the backing plate is one of the noises. It has some pretty bad exhaust crack/loose/broken stud leaks going on. The center support has a bit of rust, but otherwise the rubber seems to be compliant, but the bearing itself could be long without lube or running and could be acting up. Have you ever had the rear main seal make a whine when in a vacume from the air being pulled past it until up on boost or sometimes pushing in the clutch to move the crank just a smidge would make it go away? I've had MCs do that and that is kind of what it sounds like. I think that the guy I got it from, although he never got it running, had put a new fuel pump in and I believe it is just wired up under somewhere instead of on rubber isolations which could be some of the noise. The thing is it goes away under boost unless it's just getting to loud to hear it at that point. The center and rear mufflers are gone so just the turbo and cat to damp out exhaust noise.

If the whining is speed dependant I have to lean towards the center support bearing. I had one of those that screamed like a cat in heat when it was damp outside...

Hey Sean could you bring your Urq/4k Bentley over tomorrow. My in cab blower motor doesn't work along with diff locks and probably door locks. Sounds vacume related, but sure does idle well.

Re: Her Mars Red 83 Urq needs new wheels and rubber

I decided that one of the things that has to go on this car is the original 6x15 Ronals. Although I like the wheel and would like a set in 8", these are pretty hammered and just doesn't put enough rubber under the car. The tires are shot also and would need to be replaced so if I am going to buy new tires it needs to be for different rims.

Here are a few questions that I would like opinions on.
1- What size wheel is optimum for an Urq?
I tend to lean toward a 16" wheel 8" wide. I know that people have run 17's for brake selection upgrades, tire selection, and to fill up the well, but to me 17's seem almost to much wheel and especially if running low profile tires to make them fit. Somehow low profile tires on an Urq doesn't seem "period" enough for me. Thoughts?

2- What wheel looks the best on an Urq?
If I could find them without having to refinance the house, I would run 16x8 BBS RF Series 5000 wheels. I can't seem to find them in the mean time I'm looking for something else that would fit the period. Hank has offered me a set of stock 16x8 Urs4 wheels that I think would fit well and look good. For now that is the direction I'm leaning toward. Again thoughts or leads on RF's.

3- Finely, what size tires will fit under a stock 83Urq running on 16x8 wheels? I'm not opposed to rolling fender lips, and especially before paint, but they aren't rolled as of now.

4- All of the above is up for opinion and can change my mind and direction, but for now the price was right on the S4 rims and the Oct. GTG is coming up fast so I need to move forward. I took possesion of the S4 rims from Hank to find that although thery were in pretty good shape as far as dents and curb rash, they needed to be refinished bad!! So the question now becomes how should I refinish them? I have a few ideas....what do you guys think?

I cleaned them up and spent the day taking the paint off with stripper.
Image

I then cleaned them up with a semi gloss look to the lip and spokes leaving the rest dull.
Image

My plan was to just clear over the top, but because I was just playing around with a look and knew things needed to be finished better than they were, after I had the paint off , I then bead blasted them.
Image
Image

So here are some more questions.
1- Do I repaint them silver with a clear on top?
2- Do I just clear on top of the bead blast?
3- Do I put a brushed aluminum type finish on the lips and spokes and clear over the top? I would probably etch in between the spokes to darken the bead blast before clearing.

I'm leaning toward the last choice, but want opinions........or RF's. I also need center caps for the S4 wheels if anyone has some around that they would part with. Thanks

Consider painting them white? Go for that rally look? Find or make a small center cap and get nice studs and let them show?

Those look like they are in great shape. My best recommendation is to go with whatever finish will look the best and be consistent between the wheels and the center caps...

White would be great as well as a super-bright silver...

P.S. the size mentioned on my car (215/50x16) should also work well on those, most 225's go to a larger shared carcass and end up rubbing in the front when turned hard as well as in the rear under leaning or compression... I know Hank didn't have that problem with his, but his BBS RF's were off a Mercedes and could have had a slightly different offset perhaps? I'm not sure but my RF's on your car rubbed even before the car was lowered.

P.P.S i never saw so much free space on your garage floor!!

I don't think that I could go the white rally look, especially as I'm trying to sell it as a Her Urq. I'm not making much headway on that front however so I guess it really wouldn't matter. I have thought about running a small cap and open lugs, even busted out the box of spare stuff to see if anything fit.

Sean I have thought about the center cap match which wouldn't be able to be bead blasted down to aluminum and cleared like the wheels, which takes me back to paint. So is it a two person concensus so far that they ought to be painted?

Pictures of wheels on rides are welcome.

Or an epoxy floor either. I'm taking those pictures at work where the bead blaster is large enought to fit wheels in. :D

Does anyone know offhand the offsets between say the RFs and Urs4 wheels. Sean do you think that these wheels have less offset than your RFs and would therefore rub the fenders even easier? How much offset can be run with 225 series tires before rubbing the strut happens?
