I thought that vems didn't work with the stock sensors?

Recalibrated the wideband. Only changed it slightly so I doubt that is it.

Oh one thing. I re-reversed the polarity. But it didn't make a difference in my trigger log. And then as I said later, I had trigger in the trigger log. Any possibility trigger would work with normal polarity but then crap out under certain conditions ?

It "works" but nobody seems to have, or is sharing, a configuration for the I5 which accurately senses and corrects for knock. Anyway, you have it on I'd turn it off.

Ahh... awesome I will try that. DIdn't realize I had it on.

Matt,

It might be possible that your wideband is contaminated after all that anti-freeze has gone throught it ?

Seen it many times with narrow 02 sensors.

Just a thought.

Cheers,

Craig

I guess it's possible. But it has done this (wandering) from day one, from the very first time I tried to calibrate it.

Marc told me in current VEMS firmware knock sensing is disabled, he just recommends using that fancy knock ears deal he has.

the 'just released' 1.2.15 brings it back. I have not had a chance to review it yet, but here are the docs for it:

Interesting! Even if correction is not reliable it'd be great if it could at least allow for comparison or a display like the ol' SAAB knock box trick.

" A competent tuner needs to carry out a frequency analysis to determine the frequency where the difference of the engine sound with and without detonation is most clear to detect."

I take it that using the knock phones signal, we have already figured out what frequency to hone in on...

Made some progress last night. Dad switched the polarity while I helped a friend on his tdi. When he did it made no difference, still backfires. So he tried moving the trigger sensor father away and that made it worse, backfires /misses through the rev range. So he moved it closer, way closer, and bam! 7k at s stand still no problem. Unfortunately it started randomly stalling and also misses while driving, from 1k to 2k. And a backfire up near 5-6k. But now when it backfires it kills the ecu connection so the logs don't capture what happens. But the rpm line on logs is super smooth (could be from polarity change) so maybe my sensor is getting weak. It could also be the cps I suppose but I'm going to investigate the primary trigger first. It's so close.... Agh.

Dad had a thought about the ecu potentially losing power so we're going to check over all the wiring today and I'm going to swap sensors. Hoping to have this figured out today!

You're. So. Goddamn. Close! I wish I had any trouble shooting suggestions but stick to it, this too sweet of a 4k for you not to enjoy!

Runs and drives, drives okay but no full throttle because of mis/backfire. Pretty sure it's to do with trigger but fed up troubleshooting.

In that case, maybe a custom built, engine swapped, 25-year old Audi on stand-alone engine management is not for you after all

you know you could always just switch to auditrigger... Put back sj7 and change your trigger settings accordingly...

And use... A fw pin? Not sure if this fw has a pin or not but I guess it's easy enough to put on. I'll give you a call in a bit, Marc.

I feel schizo. Every time I think I've got it I end up two steps back. Troubleshooting for 4+months is not fun.
