You jerk! Now I pretty much have to swap to 5 lug, which means new, bigger brakes and some twists. Do you have any idea what that will cost? At this rate I'm never gonna have a duplex ;)

I love the idea. Nice work Derek!

the rears are pressed in, i just gotta wait for wheel bearings for the fronts then those can go together 8)

(yes, that's a front rotor and it's just sitting on there for fits and giggles)

man that's a big rotor!

Great work D, I've been thinking about doing this same thing for a while now! Thanks for testing it out. :-D

ahhhhhh, they work!

Image

well, mostly..
Image

Image

the top of the tire is ohhh, about 1.75" not far enough in :P so i gotta work on my strut mods some more.

Image

this is part of my solution...

I'm not sure I understand the 3rd pic. What's up with that?

Eric

the third pic is essentially a plumb line showing how far out the top of the tire was tilted out because the inside of the top of the tire, was touching the strut. i made a new plate to get my dimensions more in line for where i need to shoot...

Image

now i got a half inch of clearance between the tire and the strut tube, which i think i might be able to cut down on, but gotta wait for another couple tires to show up just yet, i can't let haydn get the jump on me too bad for max tire width ;)
Image

now we're cookin with gas..
Image

before i go too much further on this suspension part, i need to figure out what i'm gonna do with the upper strut mount points. they need to go in and back 1" each way, and that will change the gap on the bottom end yet again, and i only wanna make struts once :P

So the parts you're using are a mix & match, and the plate is to move the strut in/wheel out so you get no rubbing?

Eric

the plate only moves the strut in. the hub has to stay where it's at or else it tilts outward because it's still attached at the lower ball joint ;)

I am going to be interested to know what the camber, caster, and toe is going to be when this is all said and done.

Looking good Derek

Lookin awesome Derek! Makes me more confident about 9" wheels on my CQ(with steering arm mods maybe?)

round two... my plans are slowly working out. i have a v8q diff here that i wanted to install, so that means i need a shorter driveshaft.. what to do.. custom driveshaft? possibly, but for some reason i kept a driveshaft from a V8q parts car a couple years ago, and it's almost the right length... all i gotta do is move the rear diff forward 1.75", and the engine/trans back 1" and bingo, OEM part for something critical like the driveshaft.

another part of my plan was to move the control arm mount points upward as far as i'm lowering the car(which the target is 3") to give it back it's higher roll center. the stock subframes are kind of a mess to do that to, so i'm starting from scratch, and it also allows me to put the engine, trans, and rear diff where i need them to be. this is today's progress...

Image

there's a 1.25" height difference betwen the front and rear mounts..
Image

my welds are getting better 8)
Image

Image

Image

Image

i'm giving myself room to play with moving the rear diff a little and using the shorter of the two rear axles on both sides... to move the struts inward a little for more tire clearance...

the X is the subframe rail, and the furthest out row of holes are the stock distance from the subframe, the second set is moved in 1". they go up in .75" increments.
Image

this morning front wheel bearings arrived :D so the front hubs went together...

Image

Image

you can see that the new bolt circle is far enough out to allow me to replace the studs without having to press the hub apart.
Image

there's also one more issue with the high offset wide rims. the rear struts have the toe ajustment arms, annnnnd they hit...
Image

so i found out that the rear bearings are 75mm, and early 80/90 fwd cars use a 75mm front wheel bearing, and i happened to have some of the bearing carriers around. so i pressed the whole hub/bearing out of the rear spindle and into the front spindles, and now i'll have to make some sort of steering arm off the strut assembly.

just curious, what steering angle you gonna be able to pull off with the wheel in so close to the wheel well?
