That is a 60lb per minute turbo, or good for about 600hp!! I can't wait to drive this car!!
I think I quit lending out the cars once you got married and moved out of the house.

Like we were talking the other day, it's amazing how dents in doors and tacoed wheels don't seem to be a problem anymore. It's like those problems just went away with all you kids.

You think that just because I got brave and cut the new paint already that now I'm ready to cut the core support? I think that I will at least try to get it running, the engine broke in, decently tuned and past the GTG before I worry about I/Cs. If I go front mount, then the intake should be forward facing and better flowing and it doesn't take long before I'm out of the grocery getter DD and running up the heals of the plan for the track oriented car. I have to have some differences besides license plates.

John,
I think you and Hank just raised the yard stick with that exhaust set up....I love it !!
I know for sure that you have started down a path that you will not return from

, forget the OEM look, and get that intake sorted out. I know your on a time deadline, and good luck with that. I'm sure that this car is going to be a hell of a grocery getter............ and then some.
Thanks for getting me re-motivated on my own build, bloody nice work for sure.
Respect!!
Cheers,
Craig.

I still like combining resources Craig/martin/mike. My urq needs a sq grill and h1/h4s in a bad way!

U going to leave it like it is, coat it, wrap it?????

Pete, I think that you are right in that it will be a decent turbo, but I really think that the EFR 7064 that was originally planned for this build will be that all-arounder. It is still capable of flowing 56lbs/min which is right in the same ballpark as this HTA 3076r, but with potentially faster spool. The HTA billet 3076r that is now on this build is intended to boost a 2.5l short deck stroker with the 92.8mm crank. I think that with the added displacement it will be a good track oriented engine that should spool pretty quickly. We will see.
I think you and Hank just raised the yard stick with that exhaust set up....I love it !!
Craig, thanks for the vote of confidence. It carries a lot of weight coming from you and your projects. I'm not totally sure I believe it as far as the yard stick is concerned, but they are nice pieces!!

No such thing as late Ron.
I think that for now I'm going to run it open for a few reasons. Although Hank has a half dozen of these headers already racking up miles along with his that has got some major abuse without issues, I'd still like to keep an eye out for cracking. The other reason is more selfish in that I like the look of an open uncovered tube header in an engine bay. They just seem to talk to you while the hood is up. 8) I will probably try to heat shield and such to try to control heat, but probably not even much of that while it's in this car.

Well thank you sir :-)
Are the headers designed for small chassis cars? Most of these headers are in Coupes, Urq's ect? not sure if u would know........maybe I should ask Hank. he sure makes some nice looking stuff!
All so I was asking cause I was concerned with heat. I would wrap before I would coat I think. I do like that color a raw header has after some time though... patina is the word. Anyway,
really great stuff what ur doing with this car! Besides my love of the V8's the Ur's would b my choice.

If it works in a small chassis like the urq, it works in the large chassis. The other way around isn't true. The old RS manifolds from Europe did not work in the CQ if you will recall, as it was designed around a urS....
Wrapping a tube header is a sure way to decrease the life expectancy of the piece. I plan on wrapping my next header just to see if it this strong design will withstand the abuse a wrap imposes. Usually when people do wrap, they still ceramic coat the outside to keep moisture trapped on the header with the wrapping on top.

Heat shield for the win, an afternoon with a rivet gun and some stainless sheet is all it takes. Check mine out a BBQ

So not a lot of time to work so consequently, not a lot of update. I did however dodge a bullet. A few weeks back I bought an adjustable cam gear from Cary (Nuugen) and as I get closer to installing the aux radiator and pretty much blocking access to the timing belt, I've kept thinking I ought to change the OEM gear out for this new adjustable. I finely made myself do it this afternoon before work.
New gear

As I work the old gear off, I hear something drop and upon inspection I find the key is broken off. Now I've heard all the horror stories about bent valves and crappy cam gear keys, but I have never had it happen to me. This gear looked to be good when I installed it on the engine stand, but obviously somewhere between installation and torquing the damper/crank gear, it broke off. Maybe it was cracked when I installed it, I really don't know. What I do know is that I'm glad I didn't get all the way back together and try to start it that way.

New gear installed

Does the cover fit over these adjustables without rubbing? I seem to remember some problems encountered by others.
I might want to go gambling out on the town with luck like that.

Reread my post Hank.

Yours was bought from Aaron, but on a different note isn't that a good looking header shown in the last picture?

all i know is, aside from the breach of forum-radio-silence, is that a person-to-person handoff was done at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, in the presence of two 4cylinder 650 AWHP cars, one mostly stock 4.2L A6, and one 225hp Audi TT.
and the car is looking AWESOME. have wanted a time or 14 to comment on your progress..... but have had this self-imposed forum silence rule.
keep up the great work, John. with all of the attention to detail that Mommas car is getting, HIS-UrQ should just be outstanding!!!!! if this is, in fact, HER car and not just one of your OTHER cars that is

and IIRC/FWIW, for my lowly 4cyl with the CAT cam gear, i had to drill a hole in the cover for the bolt head.... it rubbed.

Good to know that you didn't die Aaron. I was wondering. :-) You did indeed make the cam gear pass off at the Las Vegas motor speedway and I even had them both on the shelf for awhile, but took the one you sold Hank up to Salt Lake last weekend and can't find it now. When I was unloading stuff that I had brought up, I asked Hank if he was going to sell the gear to Sean or not and if so I wouldn't bother getting it out of the trunk. It never left the trunk, but somehow isn't there when I went to look for it the other night when Sean was over. Go figure? I probably put it somewhere so that I wouldn't forget it and now can't remember where that place is!!
It looks like to me that if anything rubs on the new gear it would be the adjustment lock down bolts. They stick out about 3/8" past the face of the gear. I felt like something was hitting, but I didn't have time to really look before it was time to go to work. I'm glad that the project is coming together well enough for you to break radio silence.

Thanks for the kind words.

Solved the case of the missing cam gear!! It was hiding in the IIc box with the harness wiring. I can't say that I remember putting it in the box while up in Salt lake, but there it was. I'll put it somewhere safe until you are ready for it Sean, or until I build the stroker for His Urq and need it.

I got off work this morning at 6am, came home and slept for a few hours and forced myself to get up and try to get something done on the project. It just wasn't to be. The first thing that came up was my wife complaining about hosting a bookclub GTG on Tuesday and reminding me that the A/C in the house isn't working. You may recall that a few weeks ago I mentioned that I changed out the compressor on the 5ton house unit. When doing this because I didn't have any R22 and because I wanted to do my part in keeping the ozone healthy, I evacuated the old gas for reuse. The problem with that is you never can get it all and I ended up not fully charged on the new compressor. You would think that a guy ought to be able to buy some refrigerant for his home, but no, big brother has to get in the way of yet another aspect of our lives. It turns out you have to have an EPA card and license to buy refrigerant.
That was my quest for the day.......R22! I finely managed to talk an old friend that I hadn't seen in years into letting me use his license and EPA card. :woowoo: The A/C is again feeling cool and the wife is happy. By the way as I was running to buy this in my TT, the temp registered 117f on the dash.

It was a hot one today.
Got that taken care of at about 3 in the afternoon and made it out to the garage. I know that most won't believe this, but remember that new freezer that I bought a couple of weeks ago? It was August 1st to be exact.......well I went out to the garage to find it in high temp alarm and the meat thawing
again. :x I empty everything out again, load it up in my truck, grab the receipt, and head for Lowe's. They tell me that because it is past 7 days that I would have to call the toll free number and schedule a tech to look at it. I really hate being pushy and rude, but I about had a melt down. I told them they didn't understand, apparently, that I had over $500 worth of meat unthawing at the very moment and that calling for an appointment wasn't an option. After going through the chain of command to the top, I finely left with a new replacement. They were $47 cheaper today, so I even got a refund. I'm now back in business again, but the day was pretty well shot.
New freezer getting ready to turn on and load.

And now I have two owners manuals in 4 different languages.

I couldn't stand to not do something however and since it was only 9pm and my master clutch firewall brace had arrived from 034 I decided that I would make an attempt to install it. It would have been so much easier with the engine out and installed with the rack and M/C. The instructions say the it can be squeezed in without braking lines, but they obviously hadn't considered my new paint. I ended up pulling the brake M/C off of the vacuum assist along with all the lines and proportioning valve so that I could get access. I even had to crawl back under the dash and disconnect the pedal so that I could pull the clutch M/C all the way out. The two bolts in the fender well holding the rack in place also had to be removed to be able to slide the rack enough to sandwich the brace in between. It was a PITA, but looks to be much stiffer.
The brace oriented in the direction of install. The 034 link
http://www.034motorsport.com/advanced_s ... 97&x=0&y=0

The rack slid over enough to get the brace sandwiched in between.

Trying to get it installed without pulling the clutch M/C. Wasn't happening.

Installed

I got the brake M/C square profile o-ring installed also while everything was apart. Got alot done, just not on the car. Now if I could only go to sleep so that I can go to work at 5am tomorrow morning. It's hard going from nights to days.

I totally agree, that fire wall brace, while worth it in the end is a total PITA.

It looks like the brace had been redesigned from the original, actually simpler design - maybe not to install though

This is the original brace made by Jack Dean. 034 is selling them now, not sure who makes them.
The original factory 20V brace actually installs on the inside of the car and braces from the pedal cluster.
I installed it on my '84. The PITA with factory design is that you have to take the pedal cluster out and drill/tap a hole in the clutch pivot shaft. But if I can do it on my garage floor, then anyone can.
