Ok, I blame the kids. It must have been 23.1875"

Thanks guys.

That does make a big difference. I struggle changing the alternater belt on the URQ. Big fat hands!
This looks like a lot of fun. I bet the hx52 sitting under the bench would wake that up some!I wonder if i can find one of those engines down under?

Cheers

Douglas

Great stuff guys.

Just close your eyes and it sounds like the old 20v

These guys are making north of 850whp on that 2.5L.. Looks like they are lifting the head.

I hear rumors the cranks are weak......?

1 out of 3 cranks are forged in regular 2.5Ls. Cast cranks have shown weakness in the upper 500awhp levels. TTrs cranks are available through the dealers at around 1200$. Forged and 8 bolt.

No way of knowing you have a forged or cast crank till you open up the oil pan. No year set, no code, ect. VW/Audi just sprinkled in a third, probably to overcome the cast foundries ceiling of output per year.

1/3, weird. Cheaper to buy 3 engines than a TT-RS crank :D

I believe the timing chain has been updated a number of times also.

Still a great engine

Craig

So Craig, this looks better than the VR6?? ;)

Weight wise for sure.

The ultimate engine for me would be a aluminum blocked 20v
VR5 if such a thing existed. Packaging would be awesome, and the 2.3
liter displacement would be alright.

Anyhoo, enough off topic, and back on to a exciting new project on the geek.

Can't wait to see the pictures.

Cheers,

Craig.

Yeah Ed. Sounds like you like to gamble! Issam at INA has a bunch of rabbit forged cranks for those looking.

Yes, and as Craig said, 08s or newer for the better chain design. Early design was pretty fragile on one of the guides.

what options are out there for keeping it tfsi?

The VW 2.5 is not tfsi.

wouldn't be hard to convert it over to tfsi from a hardware standpoint, but the software options are still pretty bleak.

If you want TFSI bolt on a Gallardo head, the bosses are already machined for it. In NO WAY am I interested in pioneering that route. Im already getting the bonus of variable valve timing, thats enough to swallow for now. Even on a cast crank 450-500awhp is plenty. We are running this engine completely unopened from the yard, it's why we hand picked the lowest mileage / best year as a jump off point.

On the other hand, it's not out of the question to pick up a second block and throw a forged crank / rods / pistons in it. Upgrade to the Lambo-oversized valves and grab some cams. At that point we are talking ridiculous amounts of HP potential from this engine. This is the future of Audi engine transplants.

how good are the stock internals at handling boost? (perhaps we should move the last couple pages to its own thread?)

This is really quite awesome. This opens up so much more potential for swaps and power. I can already see a high hp yoked NA 20v in my head. Or a monster turbo build.

That is the the take away from all this. I can't wait till I can swap onE into the 4kq!

gallardo is port injected till 08 ish and then it is TFSI. The head won't really bolt up and work though because of the v configuration for timing chains. That said, it would be easy enough to get a TTrs cam girdle for the 2.5L from the dealer(pretty reasonable actually). You would have to line bore the cams, but you could then put a regular TFSI pump on the girdle and then just machine in the injectors on the head. Not hard really.

TT-RS motors are silly money. Upwards of 10g for a long block, and as much as 18k. Lots easier to do the 7a--->AAN work around to make a 2.5L TTrs spec

I played hooky form work today.

It's no longer a 20v - it's a 0v

Engine and trans will come out Friday, more gruesome pics then I'd guess.

I can't wait 'til that mess is all gone.
