Fantastic build, makes me happy to have my coupe for when i can actually get around to all the things i'd like to do to it. Also makes me more excited for repainting, the nice shiny black sure is sexy... Also like the blacked out headlight valences.

Do you feel that the B490 is a better chassis/suspension for performance or just the way things ended up?

yes actually, it is as it has the B5 rear suspension. and like I said, it did win a national frist place trophy. the few years I have flung it around the cones it did seem to handle better than the CQ. I got a first placer to ease my mind. it just needs more oooomph. that V6 isnt totally gutless by any means, but it runs out in the top end, and that just grinds my gears

I dont want to beat on the CQ if I dont have to.

Ive never come across anyone upgrading to the later rear suspension. I wonder if its a bolt in option.

It has been talked about. I think you'd have to do some tricky fabrication to the chassis to make it work. No bosses for the B4 rear shocks in the CQ tub.

So, I have been slowly disassembling the coupe. I took a few three pictures of in progress, although Im now a bit further along than in the pictures.

So I have a question that everyone can help me decide on. I know that polishing the intake will keep heat in since it no longer has a porous surface to help wick off heat. but damn it sure looks sexy all shiny and blingy. I for one think its worth it. but the other options would be painting it (which seems worse on holding heat in), anodizing it,(dont know if thats better or worse heat wise) or just sanding it smooth. A friend of mine sanded his and it looked great. but I feel like my car is more a bit of a functional carpet queen. I know its not perfect but its close enough in my book. I have already blasted the intake and water mani and started sanding the intake but neglected to take pics of it. I will do so tomorrow.

On another note, while pulling the front accessory brackets and whatnot's, I found the idler pully for the fan clutch has a going bad bearing so I pulled the bearing out. its not what I would say normal. does anyone know if just the bearing is available or is it going to be the typical buy the whole bracket for 5 times more than you need to pay for what you actually need? secondly, if it is the $$$ option, had anyone found a way to retrofit a couple different bearings in there with a pin for the hub to press on to and a spacer get the length correct? If nobody has any info Im prob going to figure it out myself. it doesnt seem like its all that bad as long as I can find some bearings with the right OD or maybe have to make a sleeve if I can only find smaller OD's. Ill take a pic of the bearing tomorrow as well.

So, if there is a "been there done that" already, cool. If not, cool.

Thanks for your opinions!

and for those who have followed close enough to remember I thought this donor motor was rebuilt..... well, I found this under the t-belt tensioner. looks like it may well have been a replacement engine( brandy new) from audi. the engine looks waaaaay to clean to have very many miles on it. this is my oppinion though. I will have to run the vin of the donor car by a friend at audi and see if it is in the history.

and I have a pic of that bearing but have given up trying to find one and will use a spare bracket I know about. I priced put the bracket from audi and even with them giving it to me at wholesale, its $500 so in retrospect, next time I will just pull the bearing out and just grease it from the rear, then reinstall. not take the hub off the bearing. the heat from heating the hub up toasted the front seal. lessons learned.

here are some in progress pics of the blinging out the aluminum. I think I have decided to polish and make them shiny. I dont believe heat will be enough of an issue to worry about. especially when other geekers are painting them.

Nice work. I don't think polishing the intake or painting it on the outside would make much difference. I'd rather spend half hour gasket matching the ports though...

thanks peter. I think if it does make any difference polishing, its not enough to worry about. Ive needed to get this engine cleaned up for quite a while now. Its time the engine bay looks as good as the outside and inside.

I already ported the head. I can take a pic of the intake ports but Id rather not take the mani off since its not necessary, sorry. I had to drill out one of the studs and do a threaded insert (not helicoil). its a very quality repair option thats permanent. the loose threads with helicoil always made me nervous and I never liked using it. granted there are situations where its the only option. this was not one of those situations. I started taking the mani off and some of the studs started to come out with the nuts. I then realized it diddnt need to be removed. so its staying put.

I dropped off the crank and parts to the balance guy yesterday so I should get it back within a week or so. hopefully I will be reassembling the engine a few days after that.

sorry Sean, the engine had a bad vibration which could may well have been just the flywheel, but I got these pretty little new rods from Hank and thought WTF. I may as well go all the way.

lol. Pretty funny, I have a box from the same company with the same thing inside (for a customer car we're working on).

The only thing I wasn't horribly impressed with is in their paint job they didn't mask off the compressor, so there is overspray on the compressor wheel :slap:

Yup. same here. but what kind of intelligence do you expect from a lowly junkyard Rat. at least it spins and doesn't have end play.

yea, I talked to rod and they said they could, but diddnt think it needed bob weights. brents guy did research and came to the conclusion it turned out better if you do. its up at brents guy. c&t do great work, not ahead of the curve on 5cyls. ive done alot of business with them regardless.

im really looking forward to seeing what my setup will do with this turbo. port/polish, RS2 manni, 3in exaust, AOW innercooled with short charge run, and now balanced engine that will spin to 8K. MMMMMMMMMMMMM

Wow, so many things to comment on here but great work with the front rad and a/w ic... both things I've been looking for info to use for my own project.

Keep up the great work, I'll be tuned for more updates!

Ok so last weekend I got to work on modifying the turbo. the hot side I was told would work actually did not. Its cool though. I had the turbo left over from a previous project so it did not cost anything to find out. the result is that there are differences apparently regardless of the fact they stamp the same number on them throughout the years. this is the result of that hot side on the turbo. there are however versions of it that work perfectly. I dont have one of those.

Definitely not going to work. so I explored a different option. I decided to modify the K24 hotside that Hank V-Banded for me so as to save time and cash not having to do it again on something else. so I busted out my caliper and checked to see if there was enough meat to machine it to fit the volvo impeller. it turned out fine. I paid a machinist buddy of mine a case of premium suds to cut the right diameter and depth. I had to shape the radius myself but it turned out better than I thought it would. I only took pics of the finished product but you'll get the idea.
