loxxrider wrote:Agreed, it looks like the sleeve is too big. That doesn't mean you can't easily order one a size or two smaller... that is a much easier solution.
Shocks are so toasted from the sleeves coming off and the shock being maxed out it's really not worth buying new sleeves when I HAVE To get new shocks soon. like, asap.
It all makes sense now though. They've been too big this whole time causing the issue.

Correction. Crazy hardcore cattle guard. Never felt one so damn rough. Felt like it was a 2 inch drop and rise

So somewhat of an update. The coilover sleeves actually fit the rear shocks with almost no movement. The only reason that you can see a gap there is because I took a very poor photo without realizing it. The sleeve was only halfway down the shock body the other half was hanging in the open air. Doy. So. That removes that possible problem from the confusing equation.
N75 appears to be bad, or I have the outputs setup wrong in VEMS. Boost doesn't change whether its unplugged or not. I'll have to check my outputs but those haven't changed since the last time that I knew it worked?
Among other things. I'm thinking of running a 200 20v trans with a v8 rear diff just for the sake of awesome. Not a huge fan of the locker either.
Hopefully throwin the v8 bumpers on this thing as well as some bolt on flares soon.

Derp. a whole page back. I forget user names too damn easy. Andy. My bad man.
Ben, trying to figure out which arches or even any arches to use. Finding these flares is kind of hard. There's a local e30 guy that makes and sells them but he want's $350 for a set of four and damn that's not cheap.
Jared, I've got a 200 20v trans from the 200 I parted a while back so I'm just gonna probably run that. I'm not in 016 destroying territory yet so it should work just fine.

C clip blew off again. Dammit. Was waiting to find some used sports that I could have rebuilt but I think its time to buy some new ones. This is getting old

Phil, were you able to see what it would take to ship the fenders? Also, do you have any info on those fender arches. I have brand new OEM sheet metal to do a complete V8 body conversion including rockers, quarters, and the rear center but if you know of a bolt on kit that would be cheaper, I am interested.

The bolt on kit is not going to look anywhere near as good or proper, and I haven't really figured anything out fully yet. I just know I'm going to do it that way. Also have been sick as a dog so haven't had much time to figure out shipping.
To get back to more coilover BS.
Not sure how I missed this before. But the coilover sleeve has 2 ridges inside the sleeve to fit the shock body properly and snug. The ridges are spaced towards the middle of the inside of the sleeve. That causes the sleeve to not sit on the full Snap ring but just on the outer edge like what was discussed before causing the ring to get bent and pushed off. Not a good thing. Not sure what I can do? A smaller diamater sleeve will just get me one with smaller diameter ridges on the inside. I took some pictures so I'll upload them in a bit to explain what I'm talking about. But it makes a lot more sense now.
Contemplating cutting the bottom of the sleeve off right at the ridge so the surface that sits on the ring is bigger and would hopefully stop this problem. But not sure I can make a flat enough cut with an angle grinder.
Also tore up my CV boot real bad. FUN.
Hard to take a picture of. But the parts that DON'T have yellow bilstein flakes all over them are the ridges. Look to be a milimeter or two big. Probably closer to one.

I wish I had my car here to look at, but I'm still not sure if my sleeves sit on that inner ridge (they do on the 635) or on the bottom of the sleeve itself. Maybe finding a sleeve which will just sit on the bottom of the sleeve rather than on the inner ring would help... Do you have a picture of the rings and how they failed?

I'll get some pictures but all the sleeves failed from what looks like weight on the outside of the ring and they pretty much were bent all around the edges of the clip and pushed off. The C clip is too large for the sleeve to fit over the clip, at least mine are.
I put it back together yesterday and got some heavy duty bailing wire and put it through both holes on the clip and pulled it together as tight as I could. I had a clip blow off at Auto -x One time and had to put it back together in the same way since the clip got bent when it blew off. I haven't pulled that side apart since and it has yet to blow off the shock, so I figured it couldn't hurt.
I didn't cut the sleeves due to not having proper tools to cut it totally straight. I'll be cutting them when I get my new shocks in

Done with bilsteins and snap rings.
Will soon be ordering some Konis and never have to deal with snap rings again. Taking the easy way out instead of figuring out the snap ring issue. Oh well.
About to order some Konis, as well as other coil-over parts. Going to be putting in some strut housings with the steering arm lowered so that should help as well.
All sorts of suspension stuff going on. New tires will be going on the BBS wheels soon for spirited driving and AutoX. Whoop whoop.
Yeah nothing happening yet. Just posting about stuff that is happening soon.
Lame.

Make sure to find a source that's offering the annual Koni sale that's going on now.

Koni sale you say? What kind of sale? like is it a percentage off? Any clue what websites are doing it?
These are the koni's i'm getting but not from summit
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/kon-8 ... 00-quattrohttp://www.summitracing.com/parts/kon-8 ... 00-quattroHopefully will get those ordered next week. We'll see.
And to add, my buddy ordered some bolt on flares for his datsun 510. We're going to test fit on mine to see how they fit. Talk about exciting

Which flares did he pick up? I've been wanting bolt on flares for the 4k but other stuff on the car has taken priority

I really wish I could take a look at whether or not my rears are setup slightly different than yours and Nick's. I never had a problem for years and probably 10-20k miles of driving. Did you ever consider tack welding the circlips to the housings? Seems like that'd be a decent solution if it is the clip that is failing.

Looking at my DIY, it appears that my sleeves sit ON the rings rather than over them...

I did attempt to tac weld them the first time this issue arose. For some reason your setup likes different just slightly. Like your sleeve looks like it fits better, and the clip looks different.

Yeah, we need to get to the bottom of this because you and Nick both having this problem is not good. I'd like to compare sleeves.

What is the part number of the snap ring you're running? I'm thinking it might be different than what I and others are running.

It's the one listed in the T44 Coilover thread from Akron. Same ring that I've gotten from them a couple times. I'll get a picture of the damaged ones when I get home so maybe we can compare a bit.

Are you sure the diameters of the shock bodies are the same?
