SOB... My long progress report got erased by a logout. It's midnight, but the short of it is...

I have to be in San Fran in 15 days with a running car I trust for a 1600 round trip, and the last 800 withmy wife in the car... So in the interest of time, I will forgo the 01e fo a while. 016 torsen goes in with 4.11 and all new seam welded rear subframe/arms, aluminum subframe mounts, teflon control arm bushings(100 durometer) rear diff moutn and camber links. That should firm up the rear nicely. Driveline should be assemebled by tomarrow in time to get intake manifold parts to make a new intake manifold for myself and Janis..

Yeah, and you thought that people gave me a hard time about aviator gray. Janis said to not paint it any fingernail polish...

I almost pulled the emotional trigger on monday to paint it prior to leaving, but htere is not enough time. I do like that silver I asked you about. Do you have any more picutres of his car from that Park City meet?

Honestly, that silver is a very dead looking silver, if you go silver don't hold back just go with a nice modern German Silver... Vintage golds and silvers just suck as far as I see it... Go with a modern color. Im dealing with the same issue on the Lancia, vintage gold.

I actually liked the silver on Jim's car. But that said Ron Husak had an '83 repainted in a Porsche silver - THAT was a nice silver. Sorry no piccy.

A few updates.

The car got a suspension overhaul. Seam welded subframes, nylon control arms, aluminum subframe mounts, and the polyurethane rear diff mount.

The 016 torsen made it's way in, along with a new Southbend clutch from Marc Swanson. I also got that nifty new little 016 bushing from 034MS that makes my shifter feel 100000 times better. I also installed the short shifter I have had for the car for a bit from 034ms.

I also took the head off to inspect. Wow, I love e85. THe cylinders looked clean, the pistons were still bling bling aluminum finish, and the valves spotless. I swapped it out for Darin's old head that had 600 miles on it from a fresh rebuild with new valves, ported and very nice. I decked it to get rid of what little detonation it had. It will be nice to have lightweight lifters. I ran the old setup to 8500 daily with heavy lifters, so maybe i should raise it a bit more :)

Speaking of reving, Forced Performance sent me out the the HTA gt3582r with the billet wheel. Man, it is gorgeous. I can't wait to see how it spools...

Another engine related note, a few people have badgered me to post pictures of my powersteering setup down low. What i did was drill out hte water pump hole, tapped it all the way through and added spacers to make it line up with the right pulley. For lines, I used a 4kq feed line with a 3 inch section welded in to make it the right length before the banjo. Works great. To tension the pump, I just drilled a hole in the bracket, made a tensioner that puts a bolt into the block surface to force it away. Thats it. It is pretty easy.

Another thing is that My rack was leaking, so I swapped in a 4kq rack. While I was there, I put in in a Coleman Steering quickener. It is probably the mod I am most excited about. For 115 bucks, I got a 1.5:1 reduction. I got two splines for the quickener with small bores on the other side. I hacked up the OEM stuff, lathed bore to press in the stock stuff into, welded them, and put a welded safety pin in. At firs I was really worried about safety, but after seeing what the factory does( presses steel shafts into aluminum u-joints and applies solder to it. I have 100% confidence in the setup. I eliminated the terrible support bearing that has a bunch of play for a roller bearing in the quickner. I made a bracket to mount it to where the old bearing attaches.

I made a new radiator from scratch, as my Ron Davis radiator was leaking. Turned out nicely, and the rs2 shroud/fan fits much better then the last one.

So things to do? I need to make an intake manifold, plumb in a couple of 044 pumps, weld up a downpipe and exhaust and hit hte road. :) I may not sleep from here on out.

I am showing the radiator, not the IM.... My Tiny winy turbo doesnt need a 90mm throttle body.. :) I clearly stated I still need to make a manifold!! That one is clearly almost done! :)

Other than the obvious, go ahead and throw paint on it. There is just enough time ;o]

oooooh.... i got something COOL to show you then.

you mention 044 pumps....

here is what i got my hands on yesterday finally. plates that trap 044 pumps and make it so they mount INTERNALLY in an aluminum cell or surge tank.

i know you will like the look of it anyhow, if not the execution of it.

Image

Image

this would be one of the finished surge tanks available a little later. i had two plates with no returns made for me, as i will put them into the fuel cell up front. pretty neat stuff, eh?
