20vt B3 (The Bandit)

OK, so some of you know me, and others may not. So I will give a brief overview. My name is Dave, and I live in York PA, I picked up a black "91 80 quattro with the intention of a plain old daily driver. Well as fate would have it, I came across a wreched "86 5ktq avant for dirt cheap. Then the plans started. I had every intention of keeping the CIS and just making everything fit under the hood of the B3. Well the more reasearch I did the more I just wanted to go EFI. So the plans changed, and away went the money. I wanted to drive the car untill the engine was ready, but again fate stepped in and I blew my 01A. Time to just let her sit, and build everything.

Here is where I am now.

Head: port and polish, 34mm exhaust valves, High rate springs, and Ti retainers(thanks to Hank).
Bottom end: complete refresh, AAN oil baffle, & 7A pan.
EFI: MegaSquirt, 034 fuel fail w/ AN fittings welded on, 42lb injectors, OBX FPR(dont kill me).
Ignition: Megasquirt running on a 5 Window dizzy(for now)
Clutch & trans: 7A fly wheel, Spec stage 3 clutch, redone 01A, High bias torsen.
Manifolds have been port matched, resurfaced.
Suspension: B&G S2 springs, boge turbo gasses, 034 street density Strut mounts, poly CA bushings, and Alum subframe bushings.

I know there is more that I am forgetting, but I will figure that out later. For those who know me, you know what it has taken to get to this point, for those who dont, lets just say there have been a lot of set backs. I will post pic ASAP. I look forwad to be able to talk about this without censoring myself due to brands.

Not going to happen this year. Maybe next year. You know how it is the whole test and tune thing.

Yours is ready, why don't you come out for Carlisle?

i would love to! The company that I work for is based in New york and they were at carlisle last year. In fact i think that my associate Julian Barrera and my Boss Corey Henkin were in charge of the barbeque.

I actually wrote an article on it after the show. I posted it up but i think the site went down...

ill have to dig it up and see if you like it.

i have also test driven the audi 2013 Allroad and did a review, and my boss did the 2013 A5 Cabriolet. I have other stuff too, i did a review on the 2013 Audi A4 and various other car shows.

Sorry , rambling

Re: 20vt B3 (The Black Bandit)eurospec cam pully

Has anyone ever run into an adjustable cam pully that the adjustment marks didnt line up with the mark on the outer cog? Well here is what I got in an eBay auction from a guy in Canada. Im not sure, But Im thinking, maybe the outer section was switched with a different pulley? is that even possible?

Can you flip the pulley around? Are there markings on the back of that cover plate?

I did take the outer ring off and look for exactly that. There are no marks on the back of the plate. The front of the outer ring is machined to fit the plate. There is no way to flip it around.

That looks like a 20v style belt too.

That is odd, but not a show stopper. I would just inscribe a mark on the adjustable portion so that I knew how much advance or retard I was dialing in once the timing was set. It would be interesting to see where the dot on the gear lines up when on top dead center with the crank. You gotta wonder what position is correct.....the dot, or the adjust slashes.

Just make sure the cam is lined up with the crank. 3 full rotations before cranking

Hank, I'm using the super torque belt setup from the ng if that matters. Eurospec says that their pulley is designed for the late 20v setup.

Quattro87, as soon as I make sure the dimple on the back of the pulley, and the key line up correctly, I'm going to make a new dimple at the marks.

Good advice jarred, thanks.

I checked out eurospecs website and your cam gear is completely different from what they have pictured. Either its an older version or its a cheap knockoff.

The seller said he has a few if these that he purchased a number of years ago.

They were probably accounting for the old crusty rubber dampener to spin on the crank pulley. This is just compensation to keep at TDC reference marks :)

And there is no way to rotate it to where it lines up?

Nope, it only turns as the slot width. And the the dimple being practical at the bolt...

Finaly!!! I got to work on the engine a little bit today. :D It wasnt much, but it made me feel like I did something. I still need to get a few things to put more stuff on, so this is where I had to stop for now.

Fisrt the ancient chinese secret :D (thanks jared)

then the ARP studs
Image
Then the head gasket, Hate on me all you want, yes I am using a composite gasket. :hide:
Image
Then I wigled the head into place. I forgot how tite things get when you have to line up 10 studes
Image
Then finaly my welded, and surfaced echaust manifold!
Image

I need to get the bolts for the intake manifold, and oil pan. I also need to get a 20v oil pan gasket with the little wings. I was going to use some gasket material from work and just make the wings, but then figured the 20v piece looks to be permaseal type gasket, so I will get one of those.

It isnt much, but at least I got something done today. Now I just need to keep moving with it!
