The Project Pad

Hey all!

Even though it'll be a couple weeks before I can get started on her, I figure I'd start a thread anyhow. Some of you may recognize this car from past build threads. From what I can piece together from past threads as well as some nice guys reaching out to me, this cars been sitting in one shop or another for over 10 years! Started life in California where most all of the build took place, then to Michigan, then here to MN. Had been with the previous owner for the last 4 years in a shop in southern MN. If any of you have any history of the car, speak up! I'd love to hear all about it! This car is an absolute GEM!

Chassis- Insanely clean chassis. No rust, soft paint and only a couple small dings here and there. No dirt either! When I went and looked at the car last week, I almost fainted when I crawled underneath and saw how clean everything was! Keep in mind I'm in MN... Also has V8 tails already done and almost 2 sets of Euro headlights! I was giddy when I found those in the car! Front clip was cut off. Going to have to come up with a "bolt in" setup. I'd rather not just weld it back on being as motor swaps are a royal pain. Figure nows a good time to make something.

Suspension- Intrax springs and koni dampers. Fronts for sure are adjustable, not sure on the rears yet.

Brakes- Crossdrilled rotors front and rear, stainless brake lines all around, calipers look really clean as well. Not sure if they're rebuilt or I'm just used to rusty pieces of shit haha. Not sure on pads...

Interior- has Recaro stuff from a mkII GLI. Looks really sharp and matches quite well. Included a MOMO wheel and triple gauge pod where the diff lock switch was. As a huge bonus, aside from a little bit of chewed paper, rodent damage is at a minimum. Car actually smells ok haha.

Wheels- Some model of Speedline. Not exactly sure but they kind of look like 1 piece mistrals? I can't find much info on them at all! Any ideas? Very clean though! Almost brand new. Not sure if I like them or not....

Motor- Has a 20vt swap on megasquirt1. Wiring is a mess. Not exactly sure which direction I want to go yet. One thought is to just keep the 20v in and make the megasquirt work, which is probably the route I'll go. I'd really like to have something I can cut my tuning teeth on and this seems like a pretty good opportunity. Other thought, is to swap the AAN from my rally car into it and put a 1.8t in its place. First world problems eh?


I'm sure I'm missing lots lol. The car came full of spare parts, receipt folders, spare k26, s2 intercooler etc etc etc. Lots of iiiiiiiiiiish to dig through!

So! The game plan is to button a couple things up on the race car and then focus energy on this. I'd love to have this back together and on the road by the end of summer. I honestly don't see any reason why it shouldn't be except for the megasquirt being a PITA. Extremely excited for this project!! Probably the cleanest B2 I have ever seen, not even joking!

Hope everyone had a great weekend! The past couple days has been an absolute whirlwind! We were released from the hospital this morning so we finally got to bring our newborn son home! Happy day! It's so nice to be home. I don't know about you guys, but I hate hospitals.....

My mother in law is in town to help out for a week or two, so I got to sneak out to the shop for a couple hours. She only gets to see the kids a couple of times a year so she's loving it lol. Plus I work weekend shift and am Mr Mom during the week so I'll have plenty of time with the little guy. Pretty much all I did today was clean up the shop a bit lol. Oh! And slid fenders on it. It needs anther bath but looks sooooo good! Especially contrasted against the white one. I'm not even gonna lie, I just sat out there and drank beer looking at em both after I cleaned up ha! I'm planning on vacuuming it out as well as giving it a quick shot with the pressure washer just to get the last bit of dust off tomorrow. Ordering up some stuff this week to get the intake mani, fuel rail and downpipe together. In the meantime I've been brainstorming ideas for how I want to go about the front clip without completely hacking it to shit lol. I still need to get a decent sized intercooler up front. Should be an interesting couple weeks!

Congrats on getting your son home AND getting garage time! I finished a top end rebuild and a hundred other things the day my daughter was born. If I hadn't finished it then it still may not be done and she is 3, LOL!
I am a stay at home dad so I know how it can be hard to get time for the cars and keep a happy family.

Awesome score! I was waiting for someone to pick that thing up. A suggestion if I may... I used nutserts on the frame horns to attach the core support on my v8 swapped car. The frame horns have metal lips the flare out and I installed 4 nutserts per frame horn on those lips. That coupled with how the support attaches to the inner fenders and the fenders themselves was plenty rigid. Strong and easy to remove.

Thanks! Oh yeah, you totally know how it goes too! On my days off, I find myself out in the shop at all hours of the night after the family is off to bed. Getting up with the kids the next morning gets harder and harder nowadays ha! I've gotten about 3 weeks worth of stuff I the cars as well as yard stuff, in the past 2 days since my MIL is in town lol.

Great idea! I wasn't sure how rigid it'd all be with just a couple bolts. I kind of mashed your idea with a twist of necessity. The core support was removed in the past with what looked like an air chisel. The horns were completely mangled, but I've got a plan to use the excess hood latch and headlight bracket material that's hanging off. I'll post up pics...

So, the house is in good order with the MIL in town aaaaaaaaaand I snuck back out to the shop for a few hours haha. It's insane how much clearer a guy can think when he's not constantly looking at the clock gauging when to pick the kids up from here or there lol. I've gotten like 3 weeks worth of stuff done in the past 2 days around the house! Time..... Beautiful time! I'd forgotten what it was like lol!

I started today vacuuming out the car a bit. 10 years in storage and the car hosted a couple critters. Mostly nesting material and mouse shit lol. Bye bye. Then moved on to the core support and mounting an intercooler. I just realized I have to run to softball so I'll just post pics of progress so far and I'll write up some more later. If I can walk straight....

Nice score. I see this is running Megasquirt. Do you plan to keep it like that, or "upgrade" to something else?

That's too bad someone fubar'd the removal. I used a spot weld drill bit on mine and got it off clean. Do what you gotta do. FYI, on my car it was strong enough to hold the biggest radiator with a fan on it that would fit in front of the V8 and never showed a hint of weakness. It will be plenty strong to hold any IC you can stuff up under there guaranteed.

Thanks! I'm thinking I'm just going to try to make the MS work. It's all there(for the most part) and since acquiring this project, my "old ass non running Audi" budget has been split into two ha. From searching, it looks like youre running it as well? I was actually planning on PMing you down the road to pick your brain some.

Yeah, kind of sucks that it got buggered up, considering the condition of the rest of the car. Oh well, Audi was fucking stupid anyhow with that whole setup lol. Next chassis up and the core support is removable... Go figure!
Glad to hear there is some strength left in there. I'm thinking it'll be just fine too. The intercooler will more than likely be mounted to the frame rails, issue that I'm thinking or concerned about is the strength of the hood latch. Meh, deal with it tomorrow. It'll be just fine haha! Cheers!

I am running MS2 yes. But to be honest, I can't take much credit for it. I purchased the unit as a DIY, but electronics are not my thing. I was very lucky to have the great Elaw on my side though. He assembled the unit, and has done the majority of the tuning. Everything I have tried to do didn't work out so well. He is a great resource when it comes to the MS.

Do you know which model yours is?

Ahh gotcha. From what I can gather, it's ms1 2.2 with spark. Are you running a divider board?

I was going to, but there is a lot of electronics "voodoo" involved with them. As of now, I'm running off the distributor for timing. Not ideal, but it works. I have Jim Green's old 60-2 damper that will eventually go on.

Do yourself a favor, purchase an MS2 processor. It will make life a lot easier when it comes down to actually getting it running. When you get there, let me know. I will be more than happy to send you my tune to help get you going.

That's probably not a bad idea. Now that a lot of the messy stuff is done, I'm going to start burying my head into megasquirt again. It's been a few years since I've read up on it. It's looking like I'm going to have to completely rewire it. Shouldn't be too big of a deal. Only concern I have really is the ECU itself and if it was built properly. I appreciate the offer BTW!

Got all that I wanted done in the last two days! Ran all my errands, family got taken care of and I got the car to a great stopping point. Only bugger was I was planning riding today to shake my bike down but it's been pouring the past 36hours. Muds no fun to set a bike up in:(.

Oh well ! Got another day of working on this thing. Yesterday I finished up the core support, trimmed the bumper a little bit, cleaned up the frame rail mess and built "quick and dirty " Mounts for the intercooler. No access to a bandsaw at the moment so they didn't get trimmed and finished. Solid as hell though! Should be sweet, 2 silicone connectors and 1 straight piece of tubing will be the plumbing. Waiting on connectors and a Michelin man hose along with my intake spacer and some gaskets.

Today I painted everything and did final assembly. Also pulled the valve cover for some paint and holy shit cleeeeean!!!! Noticed ARP headstuds too, still with lube on em ha! I noticed the motor mounts were a little sloppy so in between coats of paint, I threw in a pair of 034 track density mounts that I had from the race car when I switched to Mustang Mounts. The grill and headlights were just for mockup. Looks gooooooooooood!!

So now I'm waiting on parts. Can't wait to get the down pipe and intake/fuel stuff in! I'm so stoked on how it's coming together!

Thanks! You know, I haven't even verified lol. I'm pretty positive it's an mc1 though, just from the research I've done on the car.
