In the last month or 2 I purchased a used mig welder. Installed 220v outlet in the garage, been practicing my welding and accumulating tools for the rollcage build. I went to school for arc welding many moons ago. Looking forward to getting back into it!! Before tearing into it I'ld like to get out to the track one more time. I also got the accelerator pedal poly bushing so it should be good for the rest of its life.
Slow and steady wins the race.

I have been eyeing up these 2 tube benders. I've read reviews on the speedway motors bender and some say the bottle jack leaks after a number of bends, tube kinks while bending 1 3/4 tube and the dies crack. Other people say it works great! Has anyone had any experience with them? I have had experience with the JD Squared type benders. Your positive feed back is appreciated, thanks!

I read your thread on the other page!! Man that hurts my eyes (the page not your car), so please migrate this to the "Darkside" so I can save myself the anguish. I thought I was building a underdog for a car but yours has to frustrating to get parts for.
As far as welding goes looking at your ripple patterns, seems to me that you are whipping and not carrying the arc in a smooth manner. Since you stated that you stick welded many moons ago and you are teaching yourself a new process I can see you falling in that trap. Try just establishing the arc and than carry it in a smooth fashion Push Drag or go Parallel, depends on you preference and settings on your welding machine. Distance to work piece makes a huge diff. and should be held at the same distance for the length of the weld. Also when doing any type of innershield wire (flux core) reverse the polarity and that stuff lays down like its going to sleep. Your welds look good for someone who has not done this before. I have seen ALOT worse from people that are "certified".....
As for sheet metal, well lets just say I am in the same boat than you.
Now get that thread moved and more pics. of car please.

In my experience if you don't favor the thicker material you will burn through the thinner material. I'm practicing for the welding of roll cage base plates.
When I was flux core welding I didn't read up on the correct procedure and I had splatter all over the place!!! Switched ground and gun leads so my work piece was hot and the splatter calmed down a little.
What's wrong with the other thread? Are you the "build thread" police? Do I have bad build thread etiquette? I moved over because I was tired of all the spam and adds. They have seemed to fix that problem over there. Still a good site.

Marc (curator of the project pad) has a way to migrate your entire build thread over so that it brings all existing posts, pictures, etc. here so that you don't lose anything. I think that's what he's saying
Love the project, seems like there's a lot of neat FWD track projects cropping up recently!

I was running on snow tires (crappy tires) so I got passed a lot. But I did pass a corvette, a turbo Supra and a gazelle!
