Urs4 fuel basket removal

Afternoon everyone

Spent the last two days trying to get the fuel basket out of my 93 s4 to install the Bosch pump but for the life of me can't get the basket to come out. I understand it is only 15mm anti clockwise, and have built a couple of DIY tools to try and remove it but not having much luck. Scouring the interweb to try and find the proper tool (vag 3214) but as I am sure you are all aware it is discontinued. Just found this and going to try it out once if figure out how big the slots need to be

If anyone knows the size that needs to be cut, or has some good insight on how the hell to get this out it would be greatly appreciated.

I've always been able to get them out using a hammer and a long screwdriver to just hammer on the tabs in a counter-clockwise direction. Move around (don't just hit the same one) and they'll usually pop out after a few decent whacks. To get it back in get it started by hand, then the same method to get it fully seated.

Thanks wasn't sure about damaging the plastic tabs, will give it a try.

I've also used the same approach.

If you can get a wooden wedge in there and use a deadblow hammer or rubber mallett you'll be a lot less likely to do any damage.

I've always just shoved my arm in there, grabbed it and twisted it out. Wearing a glove, of course. I've done a few and they've always come out that way. With the spare tire well out you can just climb right in there.

This may become usefully to me soon. I still don't know about the pump in the CQ, and have never had to remove one before. So thank you all in advance!

This is what I do when I need to do my fuel pump, no special tools, just reach in and twist the basket, then lift up.

For all those wondering, I ended up making a piece out of pvc plumbing pipe. Drilled holes in it and placed bolts in to hook into the plastic ring - took some messing around to get it tight enough but once it started moving it worked nicely getting it out and the new one back in .
