Just picked up a set of 7a cams finally. Does anyone have a good write up for a cam swap?

Its super easy. You don't even need to remove the timing belt. just loosen the caps evenly aka a little at a time then you can slip the tbelt off. then put new cam in while making sure the dizzy is still timed right and slip the timing belt back on. then tighten the caps down EVENLY to 11 ft lb and wait half hour to an hour to start it up. Wrote this from my phone so sorry for the crappiness .

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't the 7A's have a smaller base circle needing the lifters to actually fill up more and not bleed down?

Side note, what do you guys think about having the 7A's reground?

They decompress when you take the cam out. You have to compress them down when inserting the cam and this means they have to bleed down afterwards I guess.

I think having them reground would be sweet, but I don't know much about what specs make for a nice cam and how the 7a's would lend themselves to that profile.

i'd say just run them, they will give you a noticeable increase. If you want to get something real crazy down the road, look into something like CATS.

I'm thinking that's probably the route I'll end up going although if I'm not mistaken, the Cat cams that still utilize the hydraulic lifters are regrinds. That led me to thinking about just having my cams ground to their specs for $120 a cam.

I got a few quotes from companies that do custom cam regrinds. The $120 per cam quote was from Schneider Racing Cams.

^^^ definitely not from CAT. I heard discussion of this before however. Someone had a shop that would do it... very slick idea. I wish I wanted profiles that the stock cams could be ground to :/

Well you definitely wont get much lope from a stock 7a cam, and probably not from a regular re-grind. Usually seems like the lope only comes on the solid grinds. However, you can induce an artificial cam lope on a switch if you write a second map with a really rich idle area for the car lol... ask me know I know

I thought I heard the 7a cams were a nice upgrade to 7500 rpms big turbo and all. Any revs higher than that needs head work anyway

That's true. I had a dyno graph somewhere but can't seem to find it. I want to say that the 7A's made 40ish awhp more up top on a big turbo setup.

I've seen quite a few different combinations of stock cams and 7a's. Chris, I know you run both the 7a intake and exhaust cams but have you done any research in using them in combination with the stock cams? I am also seeing that there are different cam gears?

I have run AAN intake/7A exhaust and now both 7A. Not a huge difference between the two setups but you get more top end using both 7A. You will lose a bit of torque in lower RPMs, but it's worth the gains IMO. You gain more than you lose Everything is a compromise.

Yeah, I can't really comment on that other than I was happy with my top end. I have the Autotech cam gear. It works well with the 3b. Others can't use it due to AAN cam sensor I think.
