Here is how it is currently lined up and still no go. Am I doing something wrong?

Couldn't say. But keep up the good work, don't give up!
Re: Darin's 80tq...still a no go...
it looks like the locating line on the dist. is one tooth off. it should be pointed at the little notch on the dist. housing.
Re: Darin's 80tq...still a no go...
Based on the discussion on the previous page this is how it should line up. Derek are you saying if the engine is at tdc the locating line should line up to the little notch?derracuda wrote:it looks like the locating line on the dist. is one tooth off. it should be pointed at the little notch on the dist. housing.

Re: Darin's 80tq...still a no go...
Hey Darin, just my two cents but the locating lines should line up on the dist at TDC or rather 0 degrees. Also, just a little trick for finding TDC just so you know your at the top of the stroke is pull a plug out, put a long screw driver in #1 and you can watch the screw driver peak out so you know that your at the top of the stroke for sure.

Re: Darin's 80tq...still a no go...
I think we have some confusion here, the alignment marks are for TDC but it's not a bad idea to confirm that the window is at the hall when the pin is at the VR, which is what I am seeing in that pic. The pin and window are not at the sensors at TDC.
Darin, do you have a trigger log?

Re: Darin's 80tq...still a no go...
yes, the little line is for locating TDC between the rotor and dist. housing. just turn the dist. housing to make it line up, tighten it, and it'll be ok. So long as your crank/cam stuff is all at tdc, the dist. doesn't care it's real world orientation so long as the window and sensor are in the same place. "The dist. markings are not for verifying the #1 piston/cam lobes being at actual TDC". Provided that the #1 piston and cam lobes are in the right place, THEN the dist. markings should align with each other, no matter the position (i.e. right side up or upside down), as the markings just show that the window in the dist. wheel is aligned with the dist. hall sensor.
Does this make sense?
Re: Darin's 80tq...still a no go...
I couldn't go to bed without trying Derek's suggestion of lining up the marks on the distributor when the engine is at TDC. By doing so and then rotating the engine to where the flywheel pin is centered on the VR, the window on the distributor that Ed told me to line up was actually 180 degrees on the other side lined up perfectly with the connector. Hooked everything back up and here is what happened!

I believe the noise is the timing belt covers not lining up properly, but right now I'm so happy it fired up. I'll find the reason for the noise, then run it to check for leaks and others things, button it up and then figure out the transmission! Yippie!!!

LOUD NOISES!
Re: Darin's 80tq...ALIVE...
I bet your whole family was glad to hear that weird squealing noise in the middle of the night! "YAY, daddies car is working again *they all cheered*
I'm also glad my advice worked, cause pff, it would looked really bad on video with you naming me directly as the source of advice had it done nothing

That noise! I would have shut it off immediately if I heard that lol. Congrats on getting it running!

Re: Darin's 80tq...still a no go...
Actually, it does not. I agree that "Provided that the #1 piston and cam lobes are in the right place, THEN the dist. markings should align with each other". But I do not agree that "the markings just show that the window in the dist. wheel is aligned with the dist. hall sensor":derracuda wrote:I think what you mean to say is.Mcstiff wrote:I think we have some confusion here, the alignment marks are for TDC but it's not a bad idea to confirm that the window is at the hall when the pin is at the VR, which is what I am seeing in that pic. Further discussion seems academic and moot to this thread.
Darin, sorry if I confused things. :woowoo: that it is running!

Re: Darin's 80tq...ALIVE...
Good job Darin! Knew you had it in you! Lets cross a finger or two with that transmission!
Re: Darin's 80tq...ALIVE...
Darin. Congrats on getting it running! I sure hope you aren't at work and you are figuring out what that noise is
Just use the "My AC is broke and I have to take care of it" excuse. I also hope that your noise wasn't oil pressure related and that all turns out ok.
