Re: Pops' 1997 S6 2.5L Stroker - pistons out
i believe he has 2 turbos one on the car and one from the initial build that was replaced with one with a smaller hotside
Re: Pops' 1997 S6 2.5L Stroker - pistons out
Oh... sorry - should clarify. That is dad's 2nd turbo (backup?). Instead of waiting to send it to Comp and them to send it back, he just ordered another one to get the .82 housing put on. Don't really know why we need two around. We originally thought the turbo was leaking and smoking so we kept the second one around, but it (obviously) turned out NOT to be the turbo
I'd really like to see this turbo put more in its sweet spot at 30+psi. I still think we can make 500whp and full boost at 4k with pump gas. I think that's kind of the "goal" for now.

So a piston gets busted up, and that provokes a new manifold, DP, turbo and wastegate? Are you abandoning the QSV theory too... What gives?

Haha. No. Same turbo, with QSV. Just manifold, DP, and WG. If getting a new manifold and downpipe, why not make it ALL v-band with a wastegate as well? Plus it's a 20 year newer design and can be watercooled if needed. Do you not lust after hank's stuff prit'near errday?

Re: Pops' 1997 S6 2.5L Stroker - pistons out
Yes, yes I do... (lowers head in acknowledgement)... However vBand doesn't add WHP so in my case I've gotta make a choice based on need not on wants ... $$$ conditions prevail...
Re: Pops' 1997 S6 2.5L Stroker - pistons out
haha, got that right. But the WG should help control boost better now that we're hoping to approach/exceed 30psi.
So I just talked to dad and this is what we're thinking...
Wagner SQ Exhaust manifold with wastegate and 2.2bar spring - $800
Comp Turbo CT3-6465 3bb/billet 1.0A/R - $1300
Custom 3" v-band downpipe with wideband (perhaps a flex section, can't remember if it's on the DP or exhaust) - $250
Take it all for $2200 OBO
Pics/for sale thread soon. Also getting costs from Comp for a new turbine housing, which may affect the price of the turbo. It has ~2000km on it and is essentially new.

Re: Pops' 1997 S6 2.5L Stroker - pistons out
I am working on a setup for a customer now that is my regular manifold with a tial 40r vband, then.an adapter from vband to t4 and a spool valve sandwiched between an hta3582r 1.03 housing. This is awesome becusse the turno can still be removed via a vband, but the spool valve is attached. It only pushes the turbo out another 1.5 inches.
I would still go 82.5 on the bore. That is plenty of meat for the standard mls.

The housings were around $180 when I asked a couple of weeks ago

lol my downpipe was making contact with a tie rod because of new motor mounts and I ended up with a new downpipe, wg, manifold, and turbo as a result!

That is going to be a sick setup. Dad's already got a T3 housing and QSV - can you PM me a cost for a similar setup but with an adapter from vband to T3? I already know the cost of the dp/mani so we're good that way

So they decided to go 1.03 housing eh? Perhaps on the Garrett units a 1.03 housing would be more ideal to combat surge since their assemblies are so light?

What is the new motor concept? No 144 rods?

144mm Pauter rods, had from the original motor
82.5 or 83 or 81.5 (lol) block
92.8 crank

Sounds like
chaloux wrote:Once the pistons get figured out, the approach to the rebuild will be as follows:
Definitely
- 81.5mm pistons, 92.8 crank (2.4l)
- re-do turbo water/oil lines with proper AN fittings
- finishing details - fuel filter heat shield etc.
Maybe
- hank manifold and downpipe, possible white lightning coating
- Tial MVR 44mm wastegate
Re: Pops' 1997 S6 2.5L Stroker - pistons out

Re: Pops' 1997 S6 2.5L Stroker - pistons out
Find a tall deck! A 92.8 crank in a tall deck plus 160mm rods would be such a sick setup. Also, I bought a sweet tool to oring blocks. It is super easy to use. I can rent it out! It has restored my faith in the 83mm bores. Atleast go 82.5
Re: Pops' 1997 S6 2.5L Stroker - pistons out
So... what would the piston height be? I guess Weisco would figure that out giving them the other parameters.
Haha, talked to dad. Looks like we're going tall block. Added Pauter rods to the FS

Re: Pops' 1997 S6 2.5L Stroker - pistons out
I thought rods are 159mm, or should the b a bit longer (like u noted Hank) for the 92.8 crank?
And the op should sell that gold mine of a 92.8 crank and just utilize the 95.5mm crank that would come in the EV Block.... Just a suggestion.

Re: Pops' 1997 S6 2.5L Stroker - pistons out
But if everyone sells the 92.8 for 95.5 who will use it?

Re: Pops' 1997 S6 2.5L Stroker - pistons out
You're implying we sell the 92.8 for a 95.5. It seems like most people sell the 92.8 because it's worht a lot. But if everyone keeps selling them then who is ever going to use them? We want to use it because it's cool, hard to find, and a nice piece. Sure it's worth $$ but that's why it's nice to have it in the car!

Re: Pops' 1997 S6 2.5L Stroker - pistons out
As much as I like the 95.5 crank, I still prefer the 92.8. Problem is you just can't find them for less than an arm. Pistons speeds on a 95.5 at 8500rpm get a little high for my tastes, where 92.8 is still in the realm of reasonable. If you want to unload the 92.8, make sure you ask me first
Ron, you can use aba rods (159mmx21mm) but you give up the extra mm, plus add weight to the piston. By going 160x20, you get rid of the extra weight in the crown of the piston, plus you gain a little more rod. I had a run of 160mm rods made specifically for the stroker tall decks. They basically work with the 95.5 with slightly modified 9a pistons or with the 92.8mm with 9a pistons and a slight decking of the block. The tall decks end up being closer to 236.75mm decks, thus the reason we are able to get away with a longer 160 rod.

Re: Pops' 1997 S6 2.5L Stroker - pistons out
I'll trade my 95.5 crank for your 92.8......then Id have two which would suit me just fine. I'm getting excited to run a high rpm 2.5l stroker that the 92.8 rod ratio will bring. Mine has been in the works now for three or four years however, but you going that direction might jump start me to go again.
Re: Pops' 1997 S6 2.5L Stroker - pistons out
lol, hey! stop it! we're keeping the 92.8! scavengers!
