VW cranks are beautiful. :)

Is that Swaintech coating on the piston crowns? They do good work.

Looks like it will be a solid bottom-end for sure.

some machine work pix.

lets see, do fitting work to the billet mains, line hone the main line. mains were from previous motor so some welding and machining had to take place.
bore/hone block with torque plate.
polish crank journals and rod journals.
check and fit crank/rods/pistons/wrist pins.
balance entire rotating assembly.
hot tank, magnaflux, deck block surface.

cost was $800. and the bulk of it was fitting and welding the billet mains. $250. the mains were in the other block, and took a little work to make fit this one.

Is that your bed where your crank is shown?

BTW I'm working on two variants of torsen replacement. Hopefully by the end of the month will have at least one ready :frustrated:

Nice! Those launch pics are trully awesome...post some high res when you get to it, would be a nice desktop..

Aaron, have you figured out what exactly failed and why? What are you doing this time to make it better?
Look forward to seeing it running again!

failure appears to be 11.5k rpm related. ARP 2000 rod bolts in # 1 seem to have stretched and eventually (after three 10 sec passes) failed. the other three rods do not show this signs.

the solution is to run the strongest bolts. ARP New Age 625's in this case.

and try not to mis-shift!!!!

i did make a slider to not get into 5 or 6 gear, so i can be much more aggressive on the side movement on the shift. another thing i am going to try out next time is pre-loading the shifter to the side before i go 2-3. it works for my friend Bernd with his setup.

and playing with it and watching the linkage when wifey did it, seems like it may work. gotta test it out on the running setup @ speed though.

so in other words, while in 2nd gear, push shifter to the right. then when it comes time to go into third, you just push forward. in practice it works. and with BA's rado and 02A its working for him.

Sounds like the EMPI shifter for the aircooled's. The natural position of it was in the 3-4 gate, you had to overcome spring pressure to pull it over to the 1-2 gate. Felt funny at first but was really slick after shifting it a few times.

Block looks awesome!

duh, i did read that and already forgot...

I've never drag raced, but even when driving on road course, I find it that if I try and think about something while trying to do it(simultaneously), I actually do it worse, like turning in for a tricky corner, or getting that downshift just in right time...little things like that...it's almost better to go through it in your mind well before it comes time to do it...so I'd imagine same goes for your shifts? I don't know...just random thoughts here...but sh!t always happens, sucks it had to be so catastrophic for you...

I feel like thats kinda how I shift naturally. I'm sort of anticipating the next shift (to third) so my hand goes that way a little already when its in second. It definitely makes sense to make some kind of conscious effort to do that.

That 5-6 shifter blocker thing should definitely help keep it from going into second on a 4th gear shift. Still think it couldn't be that bad to make a 1st lockout thing though.

What if you used a rod and a spring. That when it was in 1st gear the rod would be against the side of the shifter. when you shifted into 2nd the spring would move the rod blocking out 1st gear. You would have to use two hands to engage 1st, One to pull the rod back and the other to shift in 1st. IDK works in my head.
