I also sledge hammered the strut bar downward (duct taped a t-shirt around it to protect it) and it clears beautifully now

How that thing is call that goes from one shock mount to another? Does it have any sensible effect?

That's very interesting and makes me rethink my approach... I've been very focused on keeping stock functionality, but this looks to be far more accommodating for FMIC setups.... More thinking to be done!

U should use the motorsport ones. U won't need a front mount. That way u can put the cooler in a better spot.

I hear you Ron - but I want to keep the motor/tranny more damped than that. This won't be a track or dragstrip machine. Just a go fast when I need to cruiser/summer daily.

I have them I'm my old Pearl 20vt motor and trans and they were not harsh in the least bit.

You know you could also ditch the aux rad. and use a 20v main radiator or block the ports on the 20v rad.

I was waffling between keeping it or blocking off the ports.

I guess My feeling is since I have it and it's in good shape, why not keep it if I can since extra cooling capacity isn't a bad thing? If it ruptures, I'll certainly get rid of it and block of the ports.

Ya, but you will run really rich because your ECU will want to see the coolant at 80*c. I have this problem with mine sometimes. I have to block my radiator in the winter time just to get it warmed up

I spent far too long making this last night, have a welding tan (burrrrn) to show for it, and realize once again that with the correct tools, I could have done this much more nicely and much faster but oh well... On with the pics! I'll point out where I went wrong in the assembly and I'm going to use the mistake to make sure my next projects are much moah bettah.

I made do with some scrap metal kicking around from a friends trailer for his airplane, so it's WAY overbuilt, and pretty bulky. I'll save the pretty piece for when I decide a larger IC is needed 8)

I cut the mounting plates off the stock cross member and welded up some angle iron...


And it goes a little like this:


Then I needed some fish mouth things... Took FOREVER to make with chop saw/sawzall - need band saw.

And here's where I went wrong. Decided to weld one side on and then attach to the car to tack the other side. Should have left the parts mounted and tacked both sides - must have been getting too late for me to think clearly. The end result is that the center bar has a good 1/4" elevation change end to end. Oh well, the IC will hide it.




That's where I left off. Still need to notch it out for the snub and for harmonic damper clearance. I also need to make up some gussets to close up between the bar stock and angle iron. I need to pick up a flapper wheel to clean up the welds and then blast it before paint. I plan on using a 2" hole saw to lighten things up once I'm done with everything else. I was pretty impressed with the no name 110V MIG at the shop.

*edit* I'm trying to throw this IC mounting together quickly because we're kicked out of the shop Oct.1st and I'm moving my car out on Sunday!

So I scrapped my scrap metal crossmember. I'll make it another time with good materials and the correct tools....

In other news, the wheels sold very quickly (kind of sad, but really happy) because now I can finish the car off mechanically and have only the ECU left to save up for (I hope).

To replace the speedlines I picked up some celebration style replicas for next to nothing off of craigslist yesterday and when I went to pick them up, turns out I knew the guy! I think they make the car look surprisingly normal and I really like that for now. I hated that the speedlines made the car look like something it wasn't, so here's to being subtle and understated for a while!

10lb Sledge worked great - bolted down, wrap a t-shirt around the bar, duct tape it in place and give 'er some hits each side
