Nick's Black 90 - 3B Swap: Running!
Re: Nick's Black 90 - 3B Swap: Cleaning Time
Nice work Nick! That's cleaning up nicely and should look great with some paint! Looks like we both got some time in the garage!

Still think you should bring up the valve cover and intake for some powder coating... Got some nice looking aluminium or just about any other color you fancy. Tear the block far enough and we could even powder coat that......

Re: Nick's Black 90 - 3B Swap: Cleaning Time
That would be rad. Aluminum would look really nice I think. Do you happen to have a media blast cabinet? I have one but turns out my little compressor that could ... cant.
I'm not planning on tearing down the block past the oil pan. It would blow my already low budget for this project. I'll be picking up some rustoleum engine enamel at some point to paint it gray.

If you have the cash, I'd use timeserts instead of helicoil. This is the kit you need:http://www.ebay.com/itm/TIME-SERT-NEW-1 ... d2&vxp=mtr
Incidentally, this is the same thing that the VW engine remanufacturing facility uses.

Those are awesome. Is the 8mm x 1.25 the thread that I need then? Anyone want to rent me the kit???

Re: Nick's Black 90 - 3B Swap: Cleaning Time
Yes, those are the ones you need. You can borrow my kit as long as you replace the inserts you use. I currently have 7 of them. Probably enough to fix your existing bad holes plus a few more that pop up. I'm in the Pleasant Grove/Provo area if you want to pick it up.

Wahoo Thanks! I pm'd you with my number

Do you still need a harness? I have a practically plug and play harness still for an AAN into an 7a car along with the other stuff you need. Few mods and it would work great with your 3b motor

Re: Nick's Black 90 - 3B Swap: One side primered
I couldn't go on any longer. Needed to feel like I was almost at the top of the mountain so I spent the evening drilling, tapping, heating and pulling out exhaust studs. Got the rest of the lingering studs out and two of the three broke ones drilled out and put in the Time-Serts. A big thanks to Jeremy for lending me the kit! I then proceeded to get some more grime off the valve cover and oil pan. As it turns out, my brother who works at a equipment rental store has a heated pressure washer so I'll be headed there during Spring Break. Cleaned up the intake side, put some blue tape down, cleaned with some Isopropyl and put down a coat of primer.
Phew, now we're getting somewhere!
Now I just need to figure out a way to swindle into a new 60gal compressor for my birthday...

Re: Nick's Black 90 - 3B Swap: One side primered
Red is so boring, I wanted to add some zing to that stand
I knew there was going to be some spot at the bottom that still was oily. Just a couple little spots on this side to clean and spray again. With any luck both sides will be painted this weekend. Still need to strip the intake manifold of throttle body and injectors and then find either a bigger compressor or someone with a media cabinet. I have one but my little 5gallon comp just doesn't cut it. A friend works at a trailer repair shop with one of those huge screw compressors so I might end up taking my cabinet over there for an afternoon next week. At that point it's just nuts and bolts right?
Right?
So my preliminary goal is to get prepped and do the whole swap in 4 days. Anyone that wants to help is more than welcome to
Darin mentioned even broadcasting the swap online.

Uh...right...
Well, that's not ambitious at all...
...I'll be happy to lend a hand or two if the schedule works out.
Make sure you plan out all of the details such as the intercooler, intake and turbo plumbing, exhaust, radiator/fan setup, etc...as these are the things that take the most time when you are not just swapping in OEM S2 parts. The wiring can be knocked out pretty quickly as it is mostly just splicing wires here and there and not trying to source a bunch of hard to find parts or custom fabricated bits.
Looks great! Did you end up trying the home brew solution for getting those studs out?

Re: Nick's Black 90 - 3B Swap: One side primered
here's my maths:
4 days = 96 hours
5 hour energy bottle * 20 = 100 hours of energy
100 hours of energy - 96 hours leaves me with 4 hours for after drive time.
It is ambitious for sure. All the intake plumbing, radiator, fan and such will be planned out before hand. If I need to piece together the intake/intercooler setup on the spot I will have to mock up and have a friend on standby to do the welding. There is a chance that I'll be able to source an S2 intercooler setup though which would relieve that issue. I have the 7a and 3b harnesses ready to splice together. If I could steal both your hands Chris to help with that, it would help in a major way!
So far I'm thinking of late May maybe early June. I would be willing to work around people's schedule if it would mean more people to help. I can promise that the provided food will be better than pizza

What about webcam and streaming? That's pretty important too. I'll show up for the glory.

I made the home brew and let it sit for like 20 minutes. Got impatient and brought out the Mapp gas torch. Took my time on each one and luckily they all came out. Should I use anti seize on the new studs?

Woah, a 4 day swap with webcam support would be epic for TheProjectPad!

It will be quite the undertaking but fun!
The way I figure it (totally hypothetical):
One person pulling the dash out
Two people working in the bay
Just need to find two people who can be there for at least a full day and who take Cafe Rio for payment...

Got both sides painted. Next up, getting everything blasted and prepped to go back on! Went through all the bolts that Dave gave me and separated them out into different bags. Onto the pics:
