better come with a big bag of cash
i re-thought selling it... and i think that's a bad idea. so unless someone offers me an insane amount, i'll hang onto it for as long as it'll live.i'd love to build another one though, sans the dash transplant... it's really cool, but SOOO much work. next time around i'd rather find a URQ speedo or UK speedo (135mph) and just guess above there..
i just came back from a little drive, and man, it's really nice. quite zippy, easy to get up to speed, feels light on it's feet, doesn't pull or anything despite my string alignment. it does have a little clunk in the front end somewhere, so i need to do a bunch of checking on the hardware up there.
and as for the running problems, it seems to be really rich on startup, but clears out if drive it a little. i think my short stopping and starting at the shop is what bugged it out in the first place. the idle seems to be nice and strong as well. now that the air filter is on, there's no huge whooshing sounds so i can hear what else is going on, and for the most part it's quiet.

i just got back from a real drive. lemme say this... i_love_this car. it's absolutely brilliant in every way. the suspension setup is perfect, the right dampening, the right spring rates, the delrin control arm bushings, the rear sway bar... all just perfect.
the engine, smooth, perfect.
the gearing... perfect (despite 4th gear grinding :()
the A4 brakes... perfect.
coolant temps... perfect
oil temps... perfect
i got on it a little in 4th and 5th and saw 10-11psi and hit 90mph without breaking a sweat.
i noticed that the brake proportioning valve is leaking, which i forgot about when i bought the car, but i'll just rob the alpine car of that since it won't be needing it's wilwood setup anymore. the exhaust has a little leak on my cobbled together DP arrangement, and i've got a few little squeaks and rattles inside that i need to track down, but oh man.... this car is what i've dreamed of for soo long now. it's revived my love for the venerable type85 quattro. if audi produced this car in 1985, which i know they could have... they would have swept the market, created a car more desireable than a URQ, and it would be a legend today, a benchmark to which all sports sedans would be compared to. i know people rave about the 4kq's being hard to kill and all, but really, what i've done to this car with largely OEM parts, would have made it 10 times better had the factory produced it from the git go, and no one would have complained at all.
i'm seriously beside myself here....

K, now chip it, so that when you give it 50% throttle in 5th gear and let boost hit hard, sending you effortlessly flying past the row of cars infront of you on your way to 90mph
...you'll smile a little with the power you have at hand in addition to the killer package of the rest of the car :-D .

Derek,
Been browsing your project. WAYYYYYY back at the start when you converted to 5-lug you used 90q struts. On my White ur-q I'm running 2-piece 90q rears "5-10lbs lighter per corner than 4kq rears" but I ran into offset issues with the rear brakes.
I see you used those shims to space it out a little. That might work. Have you had any issues since doing that?
2) On the front did you use 2-piece 90q/CQ struts? Thats the setup I'd like to run on my White Ur-q. If so then I'll send the 5ktq fronts I"m using now down to Belize to go onto the 4ktq "They have Coilovers" and then put 2-pc up front.
Did you have the same offset issues up front?

no issues in the rear because i used the stock 4kq rear struts. if you follow in the thread, you'll see the spacers that i used up front in the hub/bearing assembly

last week when i was out at the wrecking yard there was a scion tc that had the optional alcantara interior. someone pilfered the pass. seat, and then someone else wiped their greasy mits all over the gray on the frontside of the drivers
, so that left all the black material on the back and sides open for the taking! i got quite a few decent sized pieces off it and here's my first installment of suede into my car...
first up ya have to get the approximate size figured out...

then to get an inside seam.. the material has to be sewn inside out. i forgot to take a pic of it on the machine, but you get the idea
after that, turn it inside out and slide it over the handle..

the tricky bit is getting the ends tight and tucked. the rear end, because of the really tight fit around the handle, kind of pulled itself around the plastic and i just had to trim it carefully so as not to have plastic exposed. the front i had to enlarge the hole so the material could be tucked into the botton area to make a completed look.

installed...

i also made a suede equipped shifter knob...
started off with a has been A4 knob..

unstitch the old leather cover.. or what's left of it..

lay it out for marking and cutting..

then start sewing..

there was an issue though. this is real suede, and it's really thick... so the machine didn't like performing it's function of puncturing holes and drawing the thread through it. so i ended up using the machine to make the holes, and then sew it up by hand.

once that's done, flip it inside out..

then stretch it tight back around the knob and tuck it into the ends. this particular knob has a trim ring on the bottom and the shift pattern cap on top to hold the edges in place..

i also have my plans for the interior laid out. the seats are going to be red and black. sort of my own rendition of the CE interior from 86'. i'll be doing black endurasoft vinyl around the edges of the seats, with red alcantara (ultrasuede brand though) inserts. the doors will be done with red alcantara inserts as well, with the angled seams sewn in like the leather interiors had. i plan to have all french seams as well. it just looks much tidier 8) also going to have black suede shifter boot, and dash cluster pod cover (maybe some other bits.. who knows yet)
this is the red, it's almost an exact match to my valve cover

here's the black...

the endurasoft vinyl is what mercedes uses in 3-4 different models of their cars. it's very similar to leather in texture and touch, but about 15 times cheaper at $10 a yard. so if i screw up some of this stuff, i won't be totally bummed.
lastly, i decided what to do for the front seats... i stole the recaros out of my alpine car since they've been sitting for a year already, and i'll recover them. they're just so comfortable and awesome for everything from street to part time track use.
hope it all works out nice !

On a serious note I really like how it is coming along... I'll be interested to see how the red looks... red and black go great together, but i'm not sure how red/black and Zermatt is going to look...
actually, there's a good reason i had the thimble. even though the machine punch the holes, i STILL couldn't just push the needle through with the thread in it. i had to use the thimble to push it through... then use my leather man to grab the needle and PULL it through the rest of the way.. on every stitch. this stuff is incredibly tough!!
