I've been back at school and not much progress to speak of. Slowly ordering parts and sorting out what I'm going to do about certain (small) obstacles. Things like using the AAN intake manifold with the 4k radiator. I'll probably see if I can move the radiator over and rotate it 30 degrees with new mounts, cheap engine mounts from a fox body Mustang (Dana used these), boost control(I think I'll use an N75 valve), and what intercooler I will use. For the intercooler I think I will stuff a 20vt unit in the grille. There is a clean 100 20vt in the junkyard that has the intercooler behind the grille. Will this work on the 4k?

For my exhaust I am just going to use a 3inch cat. Got it for 60 shipped.

The support bearing on my 4k is GONE. There is just the hollowed out inner race where the bearing is supposed to be.

Been home for a few days for Easter break and knocked out a few things on the AAN and on my GTI.

VR sensor and bracket. Thanks Derracuda.

Innovate LC-1 wideband plus gauge. I have the same on my Megasquirted GTI and have had no problems.

I will be pulling the engine out of the 4000 in 2 weeks when school is done. Can't wait to get thing thing started. Thanks for reading.

Not much to say in terms of updating....the next month should be full of them.

Well, I have been super busy with my summer job/internship (full time), bike racing/training, and working on my GTI. I had to pull/install the transmission 3 times in 3 weekends. Needless to say, I got it down to a science and could have it out and installed in very little time. Now the GTI will be pulled out of the garage and the Audi project will start. I finally bought an intercooler and was messing around with the idea of putting it in the front grille space and making my own grille out of some metal mesh. Not sure yet. Hopefully I will start on labeling the harness to see what I'd like to keep on the stock harness.
I bought all my down piping from Marc at EFI Express. Great dude. I will be making up my own downpipe/waste gate pipes. Got a free Blow off valve from my friend. Bought an intercooler that used to be Buffum's! Bought some oil feed and drain AN lines. Photos.

Good luck :-)

Very nice. You should create a project thread so we can follow your project.

I sure did. It is all torqued down with new studs and nuts.

Re: Nick's AAN into 4000Q thread. Questions

Post by Rallyfreak202 »

I am using 034 IC engine management on the car and have a question about the AAN TPS sensor plug. Which wire is the one I need to wire into for the signal to the controller?
Image

I worked out the powersteering pump mounting location problem. Turns out that the bracket that I bought from another member on here only works with the 3B intake manifold. I am not blaming him at in the least. He actually said that he has not tested it on an AAN engine.

that blue thing is the evap purge valve. It modulates under certain load conditions to suck the accumulated fuel vapors out of the charcoal filter.

this, just find the charcoal canister and hook the line up to the barb on the purge valve.

any better pics of the alternator setup? is that the stock AAN location? my motor didnt come with any alternator bracket and im looking to get it over to the drivers side

be sure to brace the PS pump from the back side, it WILL wobble when you run the car. that's sitting pretty far out. otherwise, nice solution :)

it would be sweet to keep the canister and actuate it with a gpo on the 034, might be a challenge though. If you cant control the valve, I am not sure there is any point to the canister anymore. What are your emissions regulations going to be there? Here in VT a car this old doesnt have anything. Just has to have a cat so I ditched the canister on my stand alone car and vented the gas tank out under the rear bumper.

Quick tip: that AAN canister-purge valve is normally *open*. So don't plumb it up until you've got the ECU set up properly to control it, otherwise it'll be fully open all the time* and you'll have all sorts of fun trying to get the engine to idle.

* Well not quite *all* the time - it's got a check valve built in so boost won't go into the canister. But it'll be open all the time there's vacuum in the manifold.

Re: Nick's AAN into 4000Q thread. Long-term project.

that might actually work on with a car on standalone. on a map based tune, some extra air into the plenum just makes it idle higher. If the check valve shuts under boost pressure, maybe you can just leave it open. The potential problem i see is the case where some vapor builds up in the canister from sitting out in the hot sun and then you go to start the car and it sucks all that extra fuel in that might cause a rough idle or flooding until the canister is empty. Just a theory, not sure how that would pan out in practice. I just took the easy way out and just vented it out under the back of the car :D

Yup, that is the stock location.

Noted. Will make sure to do that before it goes on the road.

I think I am going to keep the canister and route the blue purge valve to the canister. With out controlling the solenoid will it stay open or closed? My 034 IB controller does not have any GPOs built into the harness. I need to upgrade to Ic and put some pins into the harness. I plan on doing that next Summer so I can run an N75 proportioning valve to control boost and not a manual boost controller.

Update: engine is in. Wiring is almost done. Intercooler piping and exhaust piping is no where near done. I leave for school August 18th and won't be back for awhile. Bummer. Working at European Autosports in TN this Summer was a great learning experience and so much fun but severely cut into audi time because I stayed in TN during the week. Anyway, here are some photos.

Mounted the oil cooler, removed old exhaust, and almost finished with the downpipe. Making the downpipe was a lot of fun and I am proud of it. All that is left is to route the wastegate tube to the d.p.

Are you keeping the Lambda sensor on the catalytic converter or mounting on the down pipe?
